Wow two at a time!  Looks exciting!  I really like the idea of modeling the book's aircraft! Really gives it a cool story .

Thanks Guy's.

The nice thing about Cusslers books is there are usually vehicles of one sort or another involved.

After these I may look into an Me262 from another book, I also plan to get the IJN I-400 from the book Black Wind.

Would love to someday try to scratch build the Ironclad seen in Sahara.

Okay, I'm not real sure where I'm going to put this thing when built, but I had no luck selling it so I guess I'm back in on this GB since there is so much time left.  I'm not going to do the fire bomber though, to many mods to do for even a semi-accurate model.  So, if anyone has some or knows of some, I'll trade my "Always" decals for a set of Jack Reid markings.

Something I just noticed missing on both 1/72 and 1/48 models is the openings on the bottom in the rear tail section for the 2 tubes (markers?)

Anyone have good reference pix?

This is the best that I have.

I didn't even know they were there?  Wow. I know Nam has the PBY in action book but it's probably packed away until his move in the begining of Feb. I have never seen those before.

Just skimmed through my Ospery books, nothing there.

Also missing of the models is the small post next to the nose turret and anchor well.

It was removable and some planes just had a hole there whan it wasn't in use.

Thought I would post an update on what I have been doing the last 2 days.

It's a bit crunchy at this point. doesn't help that it's so tiny.

O.K. Really Crunchy. Banged Head [banghead]

Not entirely accurate, but it is something to look at instead of smooth walls.

I've seen people using tape for interior structures so I thought I'd try using some scrap vinyl.

The rear Radio Room bulkhead is mainly based off the on one done in 1/48 scale in the super build on Hyperscale.

The whole thing still needs a lot of work (clean up, detailing, etc)

Next up will be the framing.

I dunno about calling it crunchy? It looks pretty good. A darn sight better than smooth walls. I used a similar technic with a Czech Models Goose and was pretty happy with the results. Some of the felows here may remember it looked really crunchy until painted up then it wasn't bad at all. When closed up it really on shows that something is there. So it works.

Alotta effort there and it is looking just fine! Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks guy's, appreciate the comments.

Daywalker, always happy to post reference if I have it.

I just find it strange that such prominent details are missing on kit's from 2 diffirent companies.

I can see them missing on civilian but not military.

Wonder if they are missing on the the other companies.

also on the Academy the small window on the starboard tail is not open.

It's maked where it goes and on some planes may have not been there.

Also the bump/tube thing on front of the tail fin on some planes is the intake for the anti ice heater.

Well my PE parts just showed up from Eduard.

This is going to be interesting since it will be my first time using it.

I managed to get some more detailing done on some of the bulkheads and am in the process of making the larger framing that goes across the bottom.

I also cut out the openings on the front on the little fin things where ropes are attached.

The PE set even has the T shaped piece (Cleat?) that goes in there.

Nice touch on the bow Eric! Yep, that should be a mooring cleat.

Keep up the good work! Having never used PE myself, I'm looking forward to your 'beginner's' technique! I have a few kits in the stash with PE and will probably buy a bending jig eventually.

But hopefully I can learn something from your experiences and pick up some AM stuff for my Cat!

I've been reading all the posts I can find on using PE so I know somewhat what to expect.

I'm thinking of getting former tool, might go with the BUG but may go with something larger since I have a 1/72 Gato to build.

Also dug out my 1/48 B-17-G that I may get PE for as well if things go reasonably well with these birds.

The small models will also need the anchor cable added to the nose.

The larger ones will need the molded on cable removed and a new one installed.

I wonder if metallic thread would work.

After making 3 hatch doors from plastic I decided to try using one as a press mold for foil.

Doesn't look to bad and since the real one's are pressed it's accurate.Big Smile [:D]

A PE brake is a worthwhile investment. Don't use the plastic spatula things for bending, use a single edged razor blade. I always paint it in the fret and then cut it out, even so it's a big waste of paint.

It never bonds very well, so work around it and install it as late in the game as possible.

Also be critical, the PE designers include anything and everything on their pattern, but many things are better left ROUND. Like women of course, but also stuff like mooring cleats, gun barrels and flight control "sticks".
