Looks like that Panzer I is progressing quite quickly. Heck you'll probably be finished by the time I get to work on the interior turret parts.Wink [;)] Nevertheless I'll be looking forward to seeing how your Dragon kit goes together......should make for a nice comparison.

I doubt I'll be done before you mg.mikael!  Next weekend I'm out of town so there will be a few days when it will sit idle.  So far I haven't had any problems with the kit.  I thought that the top front glacis plate didn't fit at first (big gap), but with careful pressure while gluing the gap disappeared!

The tracks are on, but both they and the suspension are coming off before assembly continues and will be installed after painting & weathering. The Magic Tracks, though tedious (what indy links aren't?) required absolutely NO cleanup and assembled quite easily!  The toughest part was getting just the right amount of sag.  BTW, the directions say 87 links per side is required, but I needed 89 per side.

The suspension is held in place with either a tight fit or with some blue tac.

Are you sure you got enough sag? Looks like you decided that less is more, I on the other hand decided to add quite a bit of sag and it looks good none the less.

Oh, I had to restrain myself on the track sag mg.mikael!  Most of the reference photos I have show just a touch of sag so went that route.

Jason, I can't take all the credit!  Dragon did a bang up job on that!

Update for ya!  First off the funny blue vision ports: Dragon molds all the vision port parts in clear styrene allowing one to model the ports open with actual clear vision blocks inside!  Nice touch!  However my build will have them all closed so I didn't use any of the interior parts with the exception of the clear vision blocks.  I didn't want these painted over so I just blue tac'ed the outer parts on the hull and will remove them later to add the vision blocks.

Then I ran into some fit problems. There was a sizeable gap between the lower front glacis and the upper front glacis when mating the upper and lower hulls.  I filled this with .010 x .040 strip styrene and then sanded it flush.

The upper hull still didn't sit flush with the fenders and lower glacis so I had to file, scrape and sand part of the interior surface to get a decent fit.

The upper engine deck did not want to meet the lower engine deck resulting in another sizeable gap.  After fiddling with different methods of eliminating the gap I found that the best way was to pop of the fenders at the rear and shave off about .075 x 1/2" along the top of the lower hull (where it mates with the fender).  This allows the fender to sit fractionally lower thus allowing the engine decks to mate properly.  There was no noticable change to the fender alignment and the scar from removing the glued on fender is hidden once its glued back in place

I also decided to open up the engine intakes so that the screens would look more realistic. Only one side is done in the photo, but the other side is already done as I type this.

Lucky, you get clear vision blocks. The Tristar kit comes with a full interior, but skips on the vision blocks....geez!Banged Head [banghead] Nice to see the Dragon kit also gives some nicely molded light wiring, on my kit all I got was some molded on wiring that looked like flash. So I had to end up replacing it with real wire.

By the way, how did you cut out those rear air ducts so cleanly? I cut mine out too, but I had one hell of a time(ended up cracking some of the thin plastic.)

Looks GREAT, Bufflehead! I did that one myself as my first Dragon build.. Kind of to let me get the feel of Dragon. Hey, it is the cheapest Dragon tank!! Big Smile [:D]   Check it out: /forums/1136087/ShowPost.aspx
And YES. TOO LITTLE SAG!!! Laugh [(-D]

Jay, ship coming along GREATLY!  Big Smile [:D]   I am about to embark upon the Revell Admiral Graf Spee. Will be some weeks till, however.

DO NOTE THIS

I will extend the GB with 7 more days. That is one week. So at time of posting, 8 days remaining. That will say when the clock goes to 00:00, starting the 8th October, then it is all done. So let's be quick here!  And please let me know if I should extend it somewhat more!! Smile [:)]

There will most probably be a Norway WWII groupbuild in 2010 aswell. But I will make that alot shorter, because this was.. Too long.. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Hope everyone will join up again!

See you all a little later.

Can we get an extension to the end of the October or so? I have alot of things coming up in school the next few weeks(urban planning research paper....AHHBanged Head [banghead]), so if I could get a bit more time then it would be great!

mg.mikael - funny thing about the molded on wiring for the lights.  I almost shaved those off because I didn't think that the wiring on the upper and lower fenders would would line up properly, but when assembled they lined up perfectly and the glue just blended them together!  Some things do work out right!!

As for the air ducts I just drilled a bunch of little holes along the inside of the ducts, used a sharp xacto knife to cut out the inner part, then evened out the inside with the knife and some miniature files.  Not too hard really, just have to be careful not to rush it.  BTW I have the Tristar kit also and I can see where you would have a harder time cutting that out.  Tristar has the back plate as a separate part whereas Dragon has the back plate molded to the upper engine deck.  Having the engine deck molded on made it very easy to hold and do the work.

Jason - Nice looking battlecruiser!  Is that supposed to be the Blucher or some other vessel? Also, is this your third or fourth build for the GB??  I saw the Z Class destroyer and also a FW-200 (?) that you did.  Did I miss something?

Huxy - yeah dude I saw your Pz I videos and the completed build and diorama!  Great work!!  You're right about the price!  I found it for less than $20 US at a hobby store in Los Angeles so I snagged it right away!! To SAG or not to SAG, that is the question!!  Sorry to let ya'll down!! LOL!

I'm a little confused about the end date.  I thought it was set for 15 Oct., but now its 8 Oct?  I didn't get a chance to read all the posts between page 1 and now....maybe I missed something?  If it is Oct 8 then I will probably be late Sad [:(] as I'll be out of town this weekend from Sat to Monday.

Believe it or not, I visited the last part of Gneisenau just a week ago. I got roughly 100 pictures of this last part..

Jupp, that's the C cannon (rear) of Gneisenau located on Austrått fort. The B turret was placed in Bergen, and A was placed in Holland.

Here's the view:

And as said, end as of now is 15th... Subject to change by little kozy me!

Very sweet pics, Huxy! Love the view from right beside the barrel.

As for my build update it will have to wait a bit. Started some work on the turret(guns assembled, sanding so it fits, etc.), however I ran out of white paint.Shock [:O]Banged Head [banghead] So I couldn't get a coat down in the turret interior. Nevertheless I may have a build update soon, since the rear of the tank is done and I started making a rope that will wrap around the prominent front headlight.

Huxy, nice photos!!  I like the shot of the barrels pointing out over the city!

Well I'm back from out of town and made some progress on the Pz. I.  Assembly is done and by the time you read this it will be primered and probably have the basecoat on.  I believe this was Dragon's 2nd release of their "Smart Kit" series, but I think they didn't quite get it right.  There were some fit issues, instruction errors, it wasn't as easy an assembly as I expected and some features are incorrect for a "late" Ausf. A wartime version.  I built their Pz IV Ausf. G Kharkov kit last year and that was a beautiful experienceAngel [angel].  The fit and finish of the kit was first rate!  I guess it kind of spoiled me Blush [:I]  Don't get me wrong...this Pz I is very nice, but I was a little disappointed.  BTW, I have Tristar's late Pz I A (no interior) in the stash and it doesn't look to have any of the accuracy issues of the Dragon kit. Someday I'll build it and see how they compare.

OH!!  Photos.........

Thanks guys!

End date is closing in so here's an update:

Used mostly Vallejo acrylic paints - Model Air German Gray for the basecoat and various Model Colors for the detail painting.  Markings for 3./Pz.Abt.z.b.V.40 Norway, 1940 are included in the kit and they went on beautifully with a little future brushed first on the appropriate areas, dried 24 hrs and then decals applied with some Solvaset.

I like to paint my mufflers pink!Kisses [:X]

Well, they start out pink. Then I paint little dots on them before applying pastels and oil washes.  I like good looking mufflers!!Propeller [8-]

I'll post another update tomorrow night!

Zipping right along! Toned down the markings and applied an ochre filter via the AB.  Finished the tools and mufflers:

See...the mufflers aren't pink any more!

I used Rembrandt soft pastels.  Dark brown, red-brown and some rusty color.  Just rubbed a little on an old sanding stick.

The rest of the tools and the MGs

And the whole round up!  Lots of work tomorrow to get it all together for final weathering!

BUFFLEHEAD

i am glad to see your correct coloring of the mufflers and tools

so many of us tend to just through  the same camo/body color of the tank over those items and leave it at that

Thanks all!  More progress last night, but I was too tired to take photos...sorry.  Had two blunders though.  The detail washes didn't come out the way I wanted probably because I didn't wait for them to dry thoroughly, and I dropped the painted shovel and proceeded to roll over it with my chair...Dunce [D)].  Fortunately it didn't break, but it got a little bent and the paint was all scraped off in areas (sigh).  Huxy, thanks for the extension!  Looks like I'll need a couple more days to fix my booboos!  Still, I should have it done before the weekend is over!  If I'm not too tired I'll post some photos tonight.

Moving right along fellas!  Got the washes looking better and it turns out the shovel was broken so I had to scratch a new handle and repaint the whole darn thing!  Applied some filters to the tools and exhaust tubes and muffler:

The weekend should see this little guy complete!  Thanks again Huxy for the extension!
