Happy New Year everyone!
I got started on my X-wing today. Has anyone else working on the AMT X-wing yet?
Looking closely at it now, this kit might be a bit of a challenge. A lot of flash in corners and on edges.
The details on the engines don't line up. I had best luck by cutting off the alignment tabs, sanding the mating surfaces flat and test fitting each half with another until I found the best match. Then I did the old liquid glue trick, clamping the pieces together, sticking a razor blade in the seam, prying it apart slightly and letting some liquid glue run down the seam. The same technique was used for the blaster cannons.
The wings have a pin on the lower wing that goes in a hole on the upper wing to hold them shut apparently. The pin was easy enough to cut off, but teh hole was a bit more work. I stretched a sprue and wedged each end into the hole to plug it. Once that dries, I'll cut it flush and sand it smooth.
The R2 unit is just bad. Really light panel lines and no raised detail. I'd love to do the cone topped R2 (like the red/white one Luke almost bought from the Jawas in "New Hope", everyone calls these R5s, but Luke called it an R2 in the movie), but I'm not sure how I'd fab the head. Anybody have any ideas?
The pilot figure is also all wrong. He's missing the vest and the box hanging on the front of the suit. His helmet is wrong too. I'm going to have to fab up some bits to fix him.
Anyone else think the bright orange flight suit is weird for a combat pilot? You have to eject and you might as well paint a big bullseye on you. I'm thinking of maybe a gray or green flight suit. I'm sure they have some kind of tech gadget for the Rebel rescue folks to find them.
Well that's all for now. I'm hoping to get the wings done by the weekend and get a start on the cockpit.
