Regia Aeronautica GB II (06/15/09 to 06/15/10)

Steve, that's a mighty fine looking build!   I use pastels too but I just brush the dust on dry and then seal with a clear coat. 

Congradulations to your Steelers and on the 1,000 mark   I was able to watch the second half of the game and I thought they were toast but they pulled it off.

Thanks Aaron and Steve for the comments on Guido.  I figured if I was going to use a enny it should be a period piece.  Unfortunately I don't have any Italian Lire from that period.

Sean, I don't usually go to such detail on figures but you and your Alex MADE me do it.  It's all YOUR fault.  

I don't actively collect coins but have kept many over the years that have showed up in my change.  My grandmother kept stashes of money (coins mostly) all over her house and when she passed away they divided up all the coins amoung the grandkids.  I was quite young at the time and most of the coins were of a vintage nature so that got me going.

Guido- I love it Dave! (Was that close enough Guy?)  Didn't notice the "1944" at first, good idea though.  Hope the little fella doesn't drive you mad waiting for his plane to be built.

Steve- That really is a beautiful example of a Folgore, absolutely breathtaking! And, congrats on 1000 posts!

Does anyone know if the Italian Co-belligerant Air Force was still considered the Regia Aeronautica?  Or, after the armistice did the RA disappear and the otherbegin?  I really don't knowmuch about the subject.

On a side note, I got an email yesterday from PCM about my Regia 109G-6 decals.  They said:

"Dear Mr. Daniels,

 Well Frank looking at the rules on page one which are very strict in their nature and knowing the sheer brutality of the GB leader I would think the Italian WWII part has you covered in any build of the Three Italian Air forces that were in the war.

The Co-Belligerant AF was up and running right after the Armistice as was the ANR on the side of the Germans. The Facist planes actually were dressed in German markings briefly (about a month or so) Until the ANR was organized and running after Hitler recued Mussolini.

After the war everything of course became the RA again so it is really just a choice in what you want to represent.

Now A 109 in Co-Belligerant colors? Never saw that it would be an interesting representation to see a 109G on the Allied side.

I'm certain Guy would give his blessing and give it a ceremonious ritual.

Dave, isnt Guido, italian for Guy? I dont know, but that figure is great. I may have to send a couple your way for you to work your magic on them.

Steve, That is gorgeous. Those decals look the buisness. Really. They look sprayed on and you have totally convinced me that my next build is my Hasa 205. With quality like this from you, you have to build another. Get down your LHS young man. This GB needs you.

Frank, the rules for this GB are very strict fella...err... well strictish..err infact as long as either the plane or the markings or the pilot, come to think of it, are Italian, then its in! Told you we were strict here. Its all Daves fault remember. The rules have been ammended as my 205 will be in German markings LOL.

 I kinda figured you were just writing everyone down as doing a 202 Folglore!  Cut and paste! keep it simple. I got did the RE 2005 and the Smer MC 200 Saetta and you said I did a Folglore?  Thought that was a rule? It's Dave's fault me thinks! Good thing Frank loves him!

Bondo, I've got quite a few mechanic types from a couple of different sets at home.  I'll take some pics later tonight so that you can see if there is something that works.  If I remember correctly they are the vinyl type of plastic figures though.

Edit:  If you go to www.plasticsoldierreview.com, click on the manufacturer's link on the left and then click on airfix you'll find pictures and reviews of the two sets that I have.  Set 1747 - RAF personnel and 1755 - Luftwaffe Personnel.  Let me know if anything looks useable.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. It was a fun and enjoyable kit to build and the smoke ring decals were just great to work with. Very fragile once they are on so take caution when handeling the model for those of you that may use them in the future. Thanks Guy for the GB even if you dont know whats going on in it. You know who made me say that, its his fault.

Bondo, I have a box of Airfix WWII Luftwaffe ground personell in 1/72. I have used a lot of them but have a few left, mechanics etc. Let me know if you want some.

Thx to Steves fantastic 202, ive broken sprue on my 205. Not a lot so far, you know how it is. Open the box, sniff plastic for an hour or so. Go through my reference book for the squilienth time. LOL

I intend to build the kit OOB. With a bit of scratchbuilding here and there. It is going to have a closed cockpit so detail in there doesnt have to go to my usuall OCD standards......but i might love it up a little LOL. Anyhoo heres the start, The seat in the picture was way over scale so i thinned the crap out of it. Ive done one half in this pic,

and both in this one, as well as giving it a coat of Alclad Dull alluminium along with the stick and the rudder pedals. I also hit the rest of the interior with Anticorozione Verde,

Guy I build that kit a couple of years ago and it is one of the best fitting kits I have done ever. It was also my first try at freehanding smoke ring camo. Needless to say I discovered I was not very good at it and they came out rather on the thick side but the kit is a sweetheart. I whish I have the Mike Grant decals back then because the kit is really that nice. BTW Guy the front page is right by me as I have not finished anything yet.

bondomam that is the exact color I have used on every RA plane I have build. In my eyes the RAF interior green is a spot on match for the interior green on almost all of the RA planes. If its wrong you can always just blame Dave! Sorry Dave it just seems to be all the fashion these days to blame you.

Bondo, RAF interior green is what I use too.  I think I added just a little light grey on the Fiat BR 20 to lighten it up a little but it looks close to me.

Guy, looks like you are off to the races again.  Wingus and Dingus must havefully recovered from the jam incident. 

Now doesn't that figure. I use simple green for rug scrubbers and the lot! We used it in the Army all the time for everything! Even steam cleaned the tank engines with it.  Never thought of it as a paint stripper though.

 Well power steering fluid is thicker than brake fluid LOL. I wish I had seen this 15 minutes earlier! Oh well next time!  Thanks Sean!

Aaron have never heard of power steering fluid as a stripper. Most are petrolium based. Brake fluid are silicone based. Big no no to mix them up in an automobile. I use dot 3 brakefluid to strip off any painting screw ups on my plastic models and it has worked great for me. I might try the Simple Green though because I like the way it smells MMMMMM nice and piney! Easy Off oven cleaner is another option but I would have to believe the smell would be pretty bad if you are not in a well ventilated area so I'm sticking with my brake fluid.

Frank , I saved a pic of every decal set I can find or that has been posted here. I see nothing yet but will keep searching.  If worse comes to worse we can go the make it ourself route. I am getting better at it now. Something that small surely we could get to work!

Well I am pretty sure I must be going crazy because I am went throught my stash looking for a second subject for the GB and I pulled out my Classic Airframes Iman Ro 37. The detail included in this kit is pretty nice right down to the photo etch wire wheel hubs.  Now I know being a short run kit it is going to be a project and with all of the detail it will probally put me in my grave but I feel the need to build this cool overlooked airplane. So am I crazy? here are a couple of pics. What do you think?

Thanks!  It is on that decal sheet I tried to order, hope it comes to fruition.  Otherwise, I may take you up on that one!  If I can find that badge as a decal, then I have my backup plan for the G-6 (yep, G-6! ).  FOund a photo of one with that badge and a black "4".  I can mask and paint the four.  Just have to find that decal.

SC- I love that plane!  And look, you have already done your homework assignment by finding a period photo of it.  Are you going to build it?  As for that emblem, the page I found it on states this:

3° Gruppo, Regia Aeronautica
2a Squadriglia, II° Gruppo, ANR

This popular emblem was another one that continued on after the split of Italian forces in 1943. Originally it was seen on Regia Aeronautica Bf109s. In the ANR the badge continued being seen on Bf109s and also found its way onto Fiat G.55s.

 

Guy, great start on the 205. I am having a deja-vou seeing your pics. So far the 202 and 205 kits are the same. What is the major differences between the two. I would really like to do a 205 soon. Looks good Guy

Steve -  I wondered the same thing all I have noticed is - twin cylindrical oil coolers, a retracting tail wheel and a blunter spinner.
