Well this G.55 was looking great untill i came to the wings. Hopefully its just mine and everyone elses is good. In the lower wing is molded the wheel wells and where my top wings pulled over them there was a gap at the front edge. Bummer!

This was attacked with superglue and accellerant. After it was smoothed out i painted some Mr Surfacer 500 on, which is where im at at the mo. Ill post pics of how it looks tomorrow.

Hey Hey ! Sorry to be so in and out lately. Lotsa diff things taking my time away but I have managed to update my Page 1 pics of completed builds.  Problem is I am so rattle brained I don't want to miss anyone. If you don't see it posted please let me know and I will have it up there with the other great works  at once! Then perhaps out illustrious leader that reeks of Ol' Spice may like to copy it and display it in the aircraft section kinda like what FRank did on the 109 GB.  Of course it would be and original idea from the Guy master as he is so ACE!

I think your roughly in the same ballpark as me. Im going to paint the U/C legs Alluminium but the actuator arms (The hydraulic arms that retract the UC) are going to be painted grey as per stormo. Im sure Alluminium would be fine but the grey gives it a little extra colour. The tail wheel will be Anticorozione. Phew, glkad we sorted that out LOL. As for my splinter scheme,

I plan on spraying the Underside grey 1st. Next sprauy the lightest colour all over then te green and lastly the brown. Hopefully ill be able to flat the coats down between spraying to eliminate any steps. Looks fun though.

I am not sure Guy. They mentioned the colors of alot of the smaller pieces that they found but not the wheel wells. I thought about the anticorrisione green for the wheel wells to. The yellow/green just looks out of place to me there so I might just use the anticorrisione green in the wheel wells just because it looks better. The U/C legs should definetly be alluminum the actuator rods bodies ussally are the same color as the wheel wells with the long piston rod being alluminum and the tailwhell assembly should be gray not sure what shade though. I have not had much build time in the last couple of days so no progress. Most of the paint is on. I just need to paint the spinner which has 4 different colors on it then the green backing for the devil emblems on the nose then I can start laying on the Future. Mabye tonight hopefully. How do you plan on painting your splinter pattern. I have only done preshading but with the three different colors I am afraid by the last coat of paint all of the preshading will lost under all of that paint. I guess I am going to need to start practicing post-shading.

Looks like old Sarge is having a little fun with you there Guy. At least he did'nt pull out your famous quote "I need a simpler hobby, something like stamp collecting" Now that would have required some serious homework!

Aah yes post a current pic (Not one from your archives) of your boy Shane, Smiling! I know, homework is getting harder and harder these days LOL.

SC, that post in Stormo has got me jiggered. I know the cockpit colour but what colour do you reckon the wheel wells should be? Bare metal or 02 . The UC legs should be alluminium? The tailwheel leg should be rlm 02. The gear retracting arms should be grey? Oh the confusion.

Pirate [oX)]Looks spot on to me Guy. Ugly color is'nt it. I think I would puke if I had to sit in that cockpit and look at that color for hours!

Almost done with the crazy paint job on the CA G-55. very complicated and a PIA. Made to be more of a PIA by CA usually laziness when it comes to decals and not printing the background colors for them as part of the decal so still more mask making and airbrushing to do and I still have to do the crazy colored spinner too! Hopefull some pics soon!

Sorry Guy I wanted you to get it right before you got to far along. Looks like I caught you just in time! I did alot of reading about what I could find out about the G 55. Fiat used a different paint supplier than Macchi and that is why the standard green was not used at the time. There was also some information about someone who excavated the crash sit of a wartime G 55. He found parts of the canopy frame that the inside of the frames were very clearly painted the greenish/yellow color. He also noted several other items and the specific colors they were painted. In the article he also notes that the plane in the museum is not actually a G 55 but a post war build G 59 backdated to a G-55. it is definetly a must to visit Stormo before building any WWII RA planes. Tons of good wellresearched info. I spend a couple of hours browsing through all of the info last night.

Aaron I definetly like the Re 2000 series of aircraft. They definetly remind me of a Seversky P-43. Looks like a nice agravation free build. I like the looks of the big radial engine and all of the exposed engine parts and detail. How come the nose is not red? Well done Sarge. The pics of the figure hunched over is Guy tossing his cookies or mabye scones in his case? Poor Guy. Hope he is feeling better!

Aaron, thats a cracker mate. Really! You work at a pace my friend, and to think you were tutoring the boy on the finer styrene arts as well. The figure looks fantastic, all the more because he looks (And acts) very much like me. Loving the disco pants, and from what ive read and seen, hes wearing a far more realistically Italian Uniform. Great job, big boy. Whats next?

Dave ! No comment! Pirate [oX)]

Man SC and Guy I am glad you all are going first at the G-55. I'd never guessed that was the interior color!  Look at you already adding fiddly bits and such! yOU ARE AN UNSTOPPABLE MODELING BEHEMOTH!  I would go as far to call you England's own " Jack La Lane!"

Finished up the 1/48 Italeri Re 2002 Ariete!  The same aircraft is portrayed in diff schemes on the profiles provided which really gives a great insight on the politcs of the time. I chose the newest one to stick with the RA look! Since it was new I didn't beat it up too bad and kept the new car smell to it.

The instructions even referred to the event as the Italian Civil War. I had never heard that term before.

Cast me a Pilot figure which is the only Modifacation I added with the exception of correcting the painting errors in the instructions.

I wanted a simple fun build and this was it.

Guy said to make the figgy look like him so I dressed him in flashy white disco pants and fine luxerious corinthian leather!  Then posed him relieving himself behind the aircraft. Laugh [(-D]

Not near as snazzy as Guy's P-51 pilot but still very convincing viewed without magnification behind a closed canopy.

Look and see if you see any decal silvering! I spent a whole day getting rid of it.  Crazy!

without flash

with flash.

Anyways it served it's purose and I enjoyed the build very much. The Actual aircraft was roughly on par with a FW 190 from what I read about it.

Pretty spiffy radial engined fighter when  compared to a Ca 200  or Fiat G-50

...and respray it i did. The cockpit on this thing is great. Theres loads of detail and it builds up into a busy looking office. I rather like this shade of greeny yellow,

The only thing that isnt all that much cop is the pe piece that represents the leather/canvas seat swab. It looks right enough, theres just no way it was going to conform the the seats shape....so i made one out of lead sheet. I cut off th PE buckly bits from the bottom and used them on the lead. Also i used a rivetting tool (Its boring really Yuk yuk yuk) to emboss some stich marks in it, Whatcha reckon,

Oh! Oh, daves here.  Decided to come and pay a visit did you? Out galavanting with your mates, was it? Got bored with them, so decided to crawl back here....Well who said we want you? And whats wrong with Aaron showing me his interpretation of the karma sutra? Im sure there was Ketchup and an egg whisk in the version i read and surely thats aloud amongst concenting adults....well semi concenting, Rohypnol isnt cheap  know you!

Crusher, you swine. I went to the stormo forum. Very interesting. It does look like the majority had the Yellow zinc chromate looking finish. Id already done mine in the Anticorozione finish. I going to redo it now, and its all your fault LOL. Seriously though, after Italy capitulated, Germany took several built and nearly finished airframes. Theres a chance they could have painted them up with thier stocks of paint or any at hand, so, the grey green of anticorozione or RLM 02 could have been used. Im going with the Zinc chromate though as it looks cool.

Great info though bud, even if it means i gotta spray it all again.

Ok Guy before you paint that G 55 go to the Forums at Stormo and then look under the heading Color and Camo Schemes. Go down a bit and there is a great post about the G 55 cockpit colors and alot of other specifics.

That cool little Macchi Chris! Man that thing is tiny. Glad you stopped in to play with us and do'nt stay away to long or you will  fall behind. It's like missng a couple episodes of your favorite show. You wo'nt be able to follow along with the rest of the story!

Guy looks like Stormo has the anti-corrosion green as FS34272 witch is a meduim shade of green. I based my color on the pictures of the restored plane on that site. There is so little on the G 55 I do not know if mabye that particular plane was built at a different plant and mabye used different primers like was often done during WWII on US planes. Different assembly plants sometimes did things slightly different. I can't see how they could goof up the primer color that bad on a restoration. Well of to some research now. I'm going to try and add some mottleing tonight to the G 55 and then post some pics for you guy's to drool overBig Smile [:D]

Good news all around. Crushers coming to the UK and Aarons almost done on the Reggie. Geez, Aarons almost finished on the Reggie? How the heck did you manage that. It was only yesty or there abouts that you were breaking sprue? You are a spasmogorical Styrofactual Godlike Model master, par excellance. Plain green schemes are fun. So many fading options. Im not expecting one bit of silvering MR!

Chris, stunning work there, Big boy. I like the colour you got for the copper. Those citadel paints are fab. When i did mine, i dug a cockpit into the thing. I know, Im nutz...but not as nutz as Aaron. Looking forward to having you come back soon.

Crusher, did you look at the link i posted of the G.55 walkaround? That cockpit green colour was way spurious. According to Stormo, they say it should be the same colour as the 202 and 205, the Anticorozione green. Thats the colour ive gone with. Ive started on my pit and, as im off tomorow and wednesday, ill get some pics posted up.

The Macchetta is finished! The smoke ring decals took a few coats of Microsol , and even then there was some slight silvering in places. However, in real life, it's nowhere near as noticeable as it is n some of the photos, and in fact, looks like bare metal showing through the paint work along hinge lines.

After the camo decaling, the other markings went on uneventfully, and then it was just a matter of detail painting and final assembly. The u/c well decals actually looked quite effective. The collector ring and exhaust stubs were painted in Citadel Beaten Copper, dry-brushed with blue burned metal Tamiya weathering powder. The kit guns and w/t mast were overscale, so I replaced them with fine heat stretched sprue, and used the same material for the pitot heads and u/c retraction jacks, not provided in the kit. Finally, I used lycra rigging thread for the radio aerial wire.

Here are some piccies of the completed model. Notice the Tamiya paint jar for scale in the first one.

This was a quick and fun project, which took only six days, most of which was waiting for paint, varnish or decals to dry. Thanks for this gentle introduction to the wacky world of the Regia Aeronautica Italiana - the bug has bitten, and I plan to be beck in September!

Cheers,

Chris.

Thanks Ritchie and SC! some body get Guy ! He got lost again? Go check the ladies room!

It's not that I am unimpressed with the kit SC.  I actually think it is a great kit. Big opening to display the pit and a cool looking bird with decent fitting parts. No real headaches in the build yet. The REef book has just about everything you could think up on it. Schematics on every part and system so that can justify a $30 price tag maybe since it is a new release. But when compared to the detail of Hasegawa and Special hobby kits that cost around that you just may have something you want more is all.  Then if  Frank was corect about the price of the Tamiya rebox then I would say that is a deal killer. Not getting your $$$$ worth there at all. The fit is good but not a Tamiya standard we know.  What are they thinking anyways?  Just went to the Hobby stores and them kits is getting really pricey!
