Yeah get to it Your Highness Bow [bow]. Im looking forward to seeing inside the palace....and Franks real video, and no more from that imposter.

As you well know, im building a Gotha (Pronounced Goater according to my pa, who knows these things) Its come to a bit of a halt at the mo due to decal probs. Sooooooo, the CANT 506S Arione (The 'S' version is the rescue plane) is coming out tonight probably LOL. Im planning on rescribing the raised panel lines oin the wings as thats the only place that i have to do it. The fuselage was wooden so there were no panel lines at all. Rubbed flat and fillered. And the floats appear to have raised joints. Heres a couple of pics from a fantastic Italian air museum,

Museo Storico Vigna Di Valle

You can see the smoothness of the fuzz and the raised detail on the floats.

Thanks Bondoman -

I have made a personal study of Italian aircraft over the years and have some rather rare publications on them, including Thompson's book and Nino Arena's 3 books on the 5 series fighter aircraft. I am glad to disperse my knowledge on the subject.

There are some interesting errors out there on the subject. If anyone has a copy of the C.R. 42 In Action book, the cover is fictional. Although the the pilot was real and used a C.R. 42 in the action depicted, his aircraft was not marked that way. He did devise the "angry wasp" motiff which was applied latter when they changed over to M.C. 202's. The "angry wasp" never appeared on a C. R. 42.

Then there is the P-39 debacle. Many illustrators looked at the photo's of the Co-Belligerent P-39's flown by the Italians. By making a wrong assumption, i.e., 4th Stormo used "4th Baracca" on their Macchi 202's before the armistice then they must have carried it over to the P-39's, because that what it looks like!? In truth it is in the same flowing script "Lucchini" after another fallen ace. Try to find the correct illustration or the right decals!, the only correct set was released by Italian Kits is out of production in 1/48.

There was an interesting situation with the Italian naming units after fallen heroes. Carlo Emanuele Buscaglia was Italy's top SM.79 torpedo ace. Just before the armistice he fell in comabat and was reported missing. The RSI (fascists) decided to name a bomber unit after him, only to find out that he survived, spending months in an Allied hospital and now was commanding a unit on the other side. Now that's egg in the face!

Here is some information that many may not know. Italian fighter aircraft primarily followed three series based upon the engine used.

The "0" seried were monoplane fighters based upon the Fiat A74 radial engine. The aircraft in this series included the FIAT G.50, Macchi M.C. 200, Regianne Re. 2000 and a few others. The FIAT C.R. 42 also used this engine.

The "1" series would be be those using the license built Daimler Benz DB 601 engine and would include the Regianne Re. 2001, the Macchi M.C. 202 (There wasn't a M.C. 201) and a few other aircraft. FIAT didn't produce an aircraft to compete in this series.

The "5" series (based upon the engine's last digit like the "1" series) where fighters utilizing the license built Daimler Benz DB 605 engine. The primary aircraft in this series were the FIAT G.55, Macchi M.C. 205 and the Regianne Re. 2005

Regianne's Re. 2002 used a Piaggio engine and was outside the 3 fighter series.

I mentioned this information in the aircraft forum, but with Macchi built aircraft the radio masts were not painted the primary fuselage color. Instead they were natural varnished hardwoods and should therefore be a dark wood brown.

If anyone has a question they want me to research I can be of help or go over to the Stormo forums.

Thanks Guy -

I started to do the struts last night. It seems to me that you should not try to follow the instructions. Add the center struts over the fuselage first. Test align them. The larger struts should easily line up later on. These center struts are able enough to hold up the wing.

I might want to do a "Herring Bone" pattern on the G.55 in my stash. This was another FIAT pattern that was only verified in the last few years. Here's a link to one that another modeller has built.

  http://www.stormomagazine.com/ModelArticles/FIATG55/JeanBarby/FiatG55_1a.html

Italeri is supposed to release their Regianne Re. 2002 in 1/48 at any time. This is something I am looking forward to as they have Cenni's marking on it. Giuseppe Cenni was probably the top Italian ground assault pilot. He flew Stukas and learned how to skip bomb with them to great effect way before the US pilots starting using this technique in the Pacific. His last aircraft was the Re.2002 which he flew in defense of Italy against the Allies prior to the Italian surrender. In this aircraft he was shot down by Spitfires attempting to attack British forces in Calabria.

http://surfcity.kund.dalnet.se/italy_cenni.htm

(the pilot of "Il Banana" Sgt. Major Tarantola flew Stukas with Cenni but transfered to fighters after a prolong time in a raft in the Med.

http://surfcity.kund.dalnet.se/italy_tarantola.htm

Here is a good site reference on Italian Aircraft colors (the armor used different colors). There were a couple of different colors of tan/light brown that the Italians used throughout the war. Some were morer towards yellow ochre and others more tannish in nature. MM's Italian sand is just one of the colors, I choose Tamiya's Wooden Aircraft Carrier Deck tan as I thought it was a closer fit for my model.

http://www.stormomagazine.com/RegiaAeronauticaColorsinWWII_3a.htm

There are alot of misconception on the colors of Italian aircraft during WWII. The photographic evidence can be a problem because some black and white film had a red bias and certain reds and red-browns fade out. Early color photography is not a true source as well as the photographer may use filters and that could cause, for one example, a yellowish cast over the subject. There is a CR.42 in color from Rhodes and some people have depicted it as two tones of green. More careful review of it have the present concensus that it was a base tan/light brown with a dense mottle of red brown and olive green. Other color pictures of Re.2000's have shown this pattern a little bit more clearer. Just an intense dense splashing of small bits of the two colors over the aircraft. I intend to try this on my Re.2000 in stash. It'll be a great trial.

This is a great book on camouflage patterns after the armistice. The author is also a modeller and plays the computer flight sim IL-2 Sturmovich Forgotten Battles. I have downloaded aircraft skins he made for that game, just beautiful work.:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/1903223296?tag=stormo-20&camp=14573&creative=327641&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=1903223296&adid=00YVBKNSXVZ6PY2CT3MC&

I saw earlier work in this GB on the De.520. They were more war prizes than captured aircraft. There was a deal between the Germans and Italians over French built aircraft. First the Italians wanted LeO 451's to supplement their bomber force, but the Germans were reluctant to relase them and tried to entice the Italians into the D.520's. As the factories for these aircraft were still producing them for Vichy and German use. Many of the aircraft the Italians received were former Vichy or fresh out of the factory with German paint jobs. A few were repainted in Italian colors. It is noted that one aircraft had the fuselage fasces (symbol of the Italian Fascists) added. This was an unusual practice, very few foreign aircraft had the the fuselage fasces added and/or the shield of the House of Savoy on the tail cross.

Sorry for my long windiness.

Excellent stuff so far Telonso. When i did mine, it looked great at that stage, its just as soon as i got the struts in my devious mitts that everything went a little pear shaped. Read back a few pages and youll get the gist LOL. Great info on the camo's BTW. Looks like your a worthy entrant. Even worthier with a video Whistling [:-^]

Talking of which. Woooo Hoooo. Great vid Deeve. And what a great model cellar. Im loving those old vintage kits and the home made spray booth. I was a little concerned by the Blair Witch esq wobble cam. I hope that was down to drink! And not just that your overwhelmed by the immense talent that was awaiting your video efforts...yeah that was probably it.

Frank.....were all waiting.....Whistling [:-^]

Aaron, your video is exactly what I expected.  Cool video of the train. Thumbs Up [tup]

Here's my work so far on a CR.42 AS in FIAT's Lizard Pattern. Italian aircraft were odd as the manufacturer often devised the camoflage pattern based on the official guidelines. As an example it is easy to tell which of the three manufacturers built the M.C. 202. You had Macchi with there smoke rings which evolved from their heart shaped verde oliva scuro (dark olive green), Breda with their small amoeba verde dark olive green over Nocciola Chiaro (Chestnut brown) and SAI-Ambrosiana with their large and sparse verde over the nocciola base. Many people think thatcamoflage was field applied, but it wasn't. If you look at a picture of some squadrons you will see the mis-matched patterns casued by the manufacturers.

The Lizard pattern came out late in the life of the CR.42 and was used on the G.55 as well. This was my first time trying it and I used silly putty to mask for the spots. Using the light to dark rule, the white fuselage ban came first, masked off, under surface blue-gray again masked off for the top coat of light brown. Silly putty made up the blotches then the dark olive green was applied. In real life the dark olive green is the base uppercoat then the light brown with the white fuselage band last. We modelers do things backwards;)

What a great way to start the day by seeing my friends.

Dave - You have a very Impressive collection in your Display Case. The water line collection is breathtaking.  Nice Deer on the wall no wonder you never got invited back. You took home  a trophy and everyone else had squirrel tails.

Bondo - You are the Godfather of the modeling world. Very cool theme Big Smile [:D]Thumbs Up [tup]

Aaron - Terrific vid from inside the cab. The sheer 3500 + horsepower of the locomotive talking to us. I have to tell you with the sound of that Diesel and Radio Chatter made me flash back to my working days.  What a nice house you have, the brown spots in the yard - Are those all the places where "Dee" has tackled the Mailman and UPS dudes  and gave them "L" ?

As for the Videos so far. Excellent stuff. Im looking forward to the rest. And maybe part 2 of Bondo's LOL. Sean,  It looks totally idyllic where you live, my friend. Aaron said he thought his was in the middle of loads of housing, geez, if that were the case id live in the equivelant of a block of flats in a block of flats.

Dave, great video. Love the cabinet. So many great planes and memories from other builds and posts. You also look like you live in a fantastic part of the world.

Aaron, you never fail to dissapoint. I was even going woo woo at the train vid. I needed to see your stash though, just to check there wasnt a damaged BV or parts of, thereabouts LOL.

Guy.

Id bloody well like to join this GB to make it official this time. As it sits I am just an honourary member, making me a billy no mates.

I have a Airfix 1/72 Fiat G50 bis that I think would be the dogs bollocks to have in this GB.

You know what Fiat stands for? Fix It Again Tony! bwahahaha!

I would just need some help for the kit as there was a blooming mix up and some cheeky bugger didnt include the painting instructions. I think this kit may be naff, but I don't know for sure. All I have is assembly instructions but no idea what colours to paint it.

If I can build this kit for the GB, I will post a video, but I may well have you blokes harrasing  me for it you bunch of uphill gardeners :)

(sorry if I have offended anyone, I am just having a laugh and a few beers.)

Finally took some photos of my finished G.55S torpedo fighter.  Te panel wash is still a little heavy in some spots because of the super wide trenches but overall I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.  Anyway, wife is playing the fiddle again tonight so I'm on Daddy duty and I still have this video homework hanging over my head so I better post these pics and git to it.

Here's a close up of Guido in his new mount.

Welcome aboard Mike. Of course you welcome. Everyones welcome. Bring along a friend, your momma, an uncle. The more the merrier. Remember plenty of pics and abuse. Eccept dont abuse me! If you have any problems or worries at all, its all Daves fault.

Oh yeah, Tomorrow you have to post a video (Dont fret, everyones got to do it. Its homework) Just a little, 'Hi im Bongo, this is where i model my stuff and this is where i live'. That sort of thing. Should be good for a giggle.

Frank, Methinks your going to have a few cue cards on the go. Just to make things a little more interesting LOL. Oooh this is going to be fun.

Shooter, that pit is looking lovely jubbly chum. Very crisp details and te wash has picked out everything. Oh and i hope your video is planned.

Progress. Tonight I started the cockpit. The instructions wern't much help, just everything light gray. I obliged and dressed up some of the boredom with spots of black and silver followed by the ever popular wash. PE seatbelts were a PITA but look good once done. There is a chain for the lap belts that isn't in the pics as it goes in after the cockpit is together. I'm no big fan of PE but those colored instrument panels look great. On to bigger and better things.
