To be honest I have arrely had trouble with Matchbox decals. the excess carrier film is not too bad but it is easily sorted with some careful trimming. If in doubt a coat or two of liquid decal film should usually sort them out. I've got some very old Frog decals to work using that stuff.

All the best.

Would it be ok if I started now? The sawmill where I work just got nailed with a 2 week shut-down so I've got 18 days off and no plans.

Sean that's a masterpiece of canopy masking, or did you do it freehand. I'd guess the latter, which in the hands of a master is the best.

WOOOHOOO I got a Stranraer off of ebay 5 minutes ago for $ 15 shipping included. Decals are apparently bothchy, but I'm doing a civil bird anyways. can't wait to get it!

Bondo - I used "Frisket Film" to mask the four piece canopy. I wont tell you how many times I messed up and started over. Whistling [:-^] Thank you for the comment.

Nice score on the Stranraer, do you have a refrence pic yet of the "civil Bird" you have in mind ?

Oh yeah, the multi-colored plkastic. Almost makes me want to just build it as-is and slap on the kit decals just to see what it would turn out like. Almost. I'm sure we all did that a time or two way back when.

Well, after I washed the parts I went over the manuel and discovered that the cockpit is woefully lacking ANY form of detail! Does anyone know if there is an AM cockpit set available for this thing?

I watched a show called Jetstream awhile back and came up with a plan to build at least one of every aircraft that 410 squadron has ever flown. Wouldn't you know it, the kit came with decals for 409 sqdr. Close, but close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades and thermo-nuclear warfare. After an afternoon of searching I managed to find a set with the correct markings so we're off and running.

Any ideas for a cool badge for this GB?

I just found a couple Matchbox kits in my stash. 1/72 Bristol Beaufighter MK X and the 1/32 Dauntless. I am a Treadhead by heart as Rob (Viper MP)can acknowlegde but if there is still room I would like to join the GB. I probably just do them OOB. Let me know.

Thanks,

Joe

Dancing, too!

Here's a link, but it's really an old list:

John Eaton is building the F-101B over in the Cold War GB. Take a look at what's he's got- he mentioned an Eduard set. That's an a/c that cries out for a detailed cockpit.

Since this is my first GB ever I have a few questions concerning the general rules. Okay, we have a start and end date. But Do we help each other with problems and questions in here or do we go to the specific forums for that particular subject? Also Do we post pics only of the finished product or also of the WIP?

Thanks,

Joe

Greg, I have a 1/72 scale Mustang in NMF with RAF markings.  Thank you so much for the kit Sean.  I have a bunch of other stuff to work through but I will try and get cracking on it.

I see that Aifix and Matchbox have released the same kits over the years.  Is the Matchbox Lancaster the same as the Airfix?  Just curious.

Greg- I received a wonderful little Matchbox kit today in the mail, thanks Sean!  I will be building the Hawker Tempest for this GB.  Now, just have to decide between the Sabre-engined or Centaurus engined version. Approve [^]

Hi Buddy,

They're different kits.

Great to see someone doing Dooleybird. Airfix released their 1/4 Mustang with these later on, and I love it so much I will do it one of these days.

Looks like we are all getting our kits sorted. Looking forward to seeing them under construction. I have dug the Skyservant out of the stash and will doubtless choose another one or two to do. I have the Lancaster that I have just started but only with a few parts off the sprue and nothing glued. This is for conversion to a slightly different Lanc. I'll post piccies on here of that one as I build.

All the best.

Hi,

I've decided that I will add some aftermarket to my Meteor. Airwaves do a cockpit set, which Hannants have in stock. The problem is that Hannants have a minimum order restriction, and I don't want anything else, just to meet their limit.

Does anyone else know of a stockist ?

Other than that I have a Modeldecal sheet that I will use.

Thanks

Tony

Not 100% sure but Graham at Relish models should be able to help with the Meteor bits. If he hasn't got in stock he may be able to order it.

Hope this helps.

I haven't even started yet but I already got the first question. The instructions for the Beaufighter call out  HB7 Extra Dark Sea Grey. I got Tamiya XF54 Dark Sea Grey. Would that color do?

Hi Joe, I'm no expert, by any stretch, but I find this site useful for questions of this nature:

http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/stuff_eng_colorcharts_uk.htm

It suggests Tamiya XF-63 for Extra Dark Sea Grey.

BTW, I've ordered my photoetch set, so slow progress until it arrives. Thanks for the advice Gregers.

Cheers

I have 1/72 Revell of Germany kits for a Swordfish and a Walrus. Does anyone know if these are the Matchbox kits reboxed or actual RoG tooled kits?

Hi Aaron, yes they are both ex Matchbox models and they are pretty good kits too. I have a couple of each in the stash and recently built the Swordfish. It went together with no problems.

Dirk, welcome to the build. Looking forward to having some armor in here. That Sherman is one I have too. just started building it for the lend lease G/B but found mine has no markings in.

All the best.

Hi all,

Here's what I've got to work with with the Meteor. As you can see I've got two of these kits Smile [:)]

Three coloured sprues in restrained shades of grey and green, a fairly thickish canopy, some nice fine raised panel lines, and some pretty old decals. By then the window had disappeared from the back of the box. The Belgian option still appeals as it would sit beside my Red Devils Hunter of a couple of years back. A prettier Belgian scheme would seal the deal, but I don't know of one.

If I decide to, I can go to Modeldecal sheet 88 from the archive. This is a nice sheet, but there is no stand out, must have scheme in my opinion.

The RAAF also operated an NF11 in a similar scheme, and a number of RAF aircraft in pretty schemes flew in Australia. I don't know of a decal sheet that covers either, but these options are still tempting.

I've got a few days to think about it anyway.

Cheers

Tony

There's some nice options for the Meatbox on the Isradecal sheet.

http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Rev3/2101-2200/rev2174-IsraDecal-IAF-63/00.shtm

I've got one of the Matchbox Meteors in the stash and one built into a T7 by cropping the wings and using bits from an Airfix F3 for the nose and tail.

Hope this helps.

Okay, I started the Beau and here are the first couple pics. Nothing fancy yet just proof that I indeed started....lol. And I have a question right with it. What is the color inside the engine cowlings?

That's a good question- I've often wondered in a general sense. Even with sleeve valves, the working space of something like that would seem to me to take on a shade of smoke/oil stains/ dirt like this:

altough the tendency, myself for sure, is to model this!:

Here's a tasty little site!

And here's a nice scheme for a Beau, courtesy of my F-in-law.
