G/B suggestion. Matchbox Mayhem G/b anyone?

Hi gregers! Looks like this thread is sitting idle but if it goes I would like to sign on. It's still winter here and I got 2 weeks off and I just finished my last build so.....I just dug around in my 400+ stash and for some reason I only have 4 Matchbox kits left so I'll commit to building a    CF-101B Voodoo.

Let me know if it's gonna go or if you've abandoned the build.

I've not abandoned the idea. I was hoping for more takers for this one. I have quite a few Matchbox kits in the stash and I like them. They are not shake and bake kits by any stretch of the imagination but a good replica can be built from them with a little work. They are generally good in outline but a bit basic in detail. I built that Voodoo many years ago and it's a good one alright, I'm not 100% sure what I will build for it, possibly the wellington, I had thought of doing the Lancaster but I have just started that for a Lancaster group build on the UAMF. Also the Dornier 18 is an appealing choice. I'll make my mind up later if this one goes ahead. anyone know the minimum allowed for a G/B here?.

Greg - sorry I did not see this earlier, as far as I know a GB can be as long or short as you need it. We had a 48 hr GB that was a blast a while back.

Current GB load:

H6K Mavis for the IJN/IJA GB 90%

AN-12 Cub for the Heavy Lifter and Cold War GB's 75%

PBY5A Super Cat for the PBY GB just started.

Avro Shackleton for the No More excuses GB, maybe in a while after I solve another problem thats holding me up through no fault of my own.

Cant Z 501 for the Reggia A GB; domani.

Bondo - That is a nice build on the Stranraer. Everytime I open the kit I am greeted by the three yummy molded in colors. I have the 1979 edition.

Plan A- build it, and I'll do one too.

Plan B- trade it to me for something. my LHS has about 4 feet of matchbox kits and I'll go take a piccy and show you what they have.

OK guys, lets get the ball rolling here. matchbox re-pops by Revell or anyone else are ok. there are some Revell kits that came in Matchbox packaging (I.16 Rata, P70 Nightfighter etc) and they're ok. open to Aircraft, Tanks Cars, Ships (anyone brave enough to tackle the 1/72 corvette convoy escort vessel?) Bikes and anything else that came in a matchbox box. Also OOB or aftermarket it to death, it's up to you That Stranraer is a great kit. I have one of those and a Heyford (another great kit). I'll put a list up soon of my matchbox collection. I have one or three . I'm undecided whether to do a few smaller ones or one or two bigger ones.
How about start date and timescales?. I see some have a few builds on the go already and some people may want to source kits and references. Also some may build real slow (like me) or may want to do more than one. (when I do my corvette it'll take me about six months minimum). Whats your thoughts guys?

Oh, I've decided, taking another forums matchbox g/b title isn't good form and all that. How about calling it the Matchbox Maelstrom instead?

Start thinking of a plan to get him aboard.

Plan A sounds good to me, but if you dont have a Stranraer you are welcome to the one I have as I know you really like the flying boats.

Why am I up this time of night ? My 17 year old daughter is at a school dance, that I will need to go and bring her home when it is over. 

I am working on a Airfix JU 52 with floats ..

I'm going to bid on two Stranraers this weekend, if I don't get one I'll let you know. my plan is to do a prewar.

THE classic Matchbox kit IMHO is the Lysander, but I do not build single engines, ummm, much...

I support the idea, but I just don't know if I can squeeze another one in right now. That's a great link, I didn't know that Matchbox listed airliners at one stage. I reckon I've owned most of the other kits at some time.

I really liked their between the wars biplanes, the Fury, Siskin, Gladiator, Heyford, Seafox, Helldiver.

Did anyone else enter that world wide model competition they ran in 1981 ( I think it was 1981) ?

I entered the Hunter and an F-16A, which I think were the first models I ever airbrushed, in the backyard, with an old tyre as the air source. I pumped it up with a foot pump.

I enjoyed their little AFV kits too, which I thought were a lot easier to build than the Airfix ones.

I don't think I've built one since 1989, so you could convince me that I'm overdue. If I do jump in to build one of these heritage kits, then I don't think I'll  try to detail it, I'll just build it cleanly and paint it 'as it was meant to be'.

Hi guys. welcome aboard everyone. OOOH the nostalgia of he mlticoloured plastic. the little window in the backs of the boxes so you can see the contents (axcept the early, late and bigger boxes) That Lysander you mention?.they did two. 1/72 and 1/32. both great kits.

Bondoman. Didn't get a PM mate. please could you re-send it?.  Yep thats me making ZZZZ's. had had a day working on the Jet Provost and also a 120 mile round trip. I needed a few mins out time. I do indeed have a forum. Please feel free to click the linky  under my post to see it and join up if you like. The more the merrier. it's the home of both the CBK (Classic British Kits) S.I.G (IPMS UK) and CBK-USA S.I.G (IPMS USA). Both deal with older models of British origin, pre 1980 but some models become instant classics, Tha 1/72 scale TSR2 for instance.  Lookinh forward to the kick off, and seeing as this is going to be more supported than I thought I'd say my original estimation of a couple of months is way too short.

Greg, I've got that kit waiting in the wings and plan to get going in the next week or two.  It is for the "In My Stash GB"  so if you don't mind crossovers I would love to take part in this GB too.  Definitely won't be a "Quick Build" though.

I'll take on the Armstrong Whitworth Meteor (1987) for this GB. If the kit decals hold up, I may even use the Belgian option, unless I find something really tempting in my old Modeldecal stash.

Crossovers are fine. No worries there. Looking forward to seeing progress on that one. Looks like we will have to make it a six month build with the option of extending it. when should we have the start date then folks?.

That Meteor is a good kit. Some slight fit issues with the intake pieces but other than that it's a good one. .

Greg - I will comit to a Vickers Wellington for my First build. Decals are Mia as I sent them to a fellow on your forum but I am pretty sure I have some aftermarkets hidden away.

I have spare Decals for the bomber versions as I will be doing mine as costal comand. Please let me know if you want them. I have both Matchbox and Revell boxings for this one.

Welcome to the G/B Rob. Looking forward to seeing what you decide on. I've changed the g/b title slightly and I hope you like the change, this is so we are not coppying the title from another forum. Also may I suggest a start date and time limit?. How about a start on 1st March and finish 1st september? That gives us six months to build but considering one member is doing the Flower class Corvette I also suggest leeping an option to extend the build.
Does that sound ok with you folks?

6 months sounds good.

I'll start with a fairly quick build. the Dornier Skyservant done in the kits Swedish Air Ambulance colours. After that I may do something WW2.

The time frame is good for me also. Although I am sure I will have at least one built before then just for something to keep the bench busy and to keep my page updated on the UAMF .

Greg - I have not taken the time to search through the stash for decals  for the Wellington yet. I will keep you updated for your offer.

As with all old kit builds, we'll all pretty quickly fall into "old decal hell". I'm always VERY interested in your tips being shared about how to make them work. Greg I read in a review that Matchbox decals usually have way oversized inf not continuous carrier film betwixt the marks, so it would pay to look at the sheet askance in strong light before dipping, just to be sure how much to trim.
