The Gunze metalics are great, with very fine pigments, but are also very delicate. I protected mine with several coats of Future, however when I went to mask up the ailerons & elevators, the Tamiya tape just lifted the top layer of the paint!

Hey,  might want to consider using a laquer gloss coat instead of Future to mask over. I've tried it on the Vallejo acrylics, and decals and have not had any problems with lifting. Try it  on scrap first. HTH

Well the Ki-115 is still not complete. I had a few setbacks, notabely the brittleness of the fine peices in the landing gear, and also some lifting of the mettalic paint on the underside. Shhh! Don't tell Karl, but I used Gunze's Mr. Metal. Wink [;)] I'm thinking it was poor surface preparation because it was only certain areas of the underside and I did some wide range masking. Or Karl could be on to some larger problem with Gunze line.

So the reapir work hase been done and I'll let the final Future coat cure until tonight when hopefully I'll begin decals.

Ah...where to start...miss posting a couple of days and then there's a lot of catching up to do!

Karl-sorry that you had to strip your plane.  However, I'm sure that you'll nail it this time around.  btw-what is the Tamiya number, i.e., XF-64, etc., on the Tamiya metallic that you used on the F-84.  It presents very nicely.  I've been happy with Talon's acrylic NMF paints, but Tamiya is readily available locally for me.  Talon's is priced competitively, but with shipping it gets a bit costly.

Jason-the Oscar looks good.  Hang in there-decals can be the most un-nerving part of a build for me-all is done and then the decals have issues.

Dirk-the Dauntless looks good.  Same with your Duck Arron.  Always nice to see an unusal build like the Duck  And it's good to see a couple of allied planes.

Guy-nice progress on your build.  Weathering is going to be a highlight.  Can't wait to see more.

Busy weekend for me-no plastic involved.  Hope to get some work done on the interior early thisweek. Did get my Eduard PE-the pre-painted Zoom.  Unfortunalty, it did not include a new seat.  The numbering scheme used by Squadron had me confused so I ordered the wrong item.  No problem though-I probably would not have used the full fret of other PE sheet available.  I did order an Ultracast resin seat though...and I'll have a spare for the next P-40 build!  One question though-I've seen P-40E's build with both the seat being bare aluminium and also interior green.  Anybody know the reason for this or is it a 'builders choice'?

Enough diversion for awhile-back to sending out resumes!

Cheers

Bob

Bob - I have read in many of the reference books I have that they were left "natural aluminum" I paint mine Int. Green mainly as my airbrush is loaded from painting the Int. sides and floor. I can then brush some "aluminum" on to show wear marks.  Something I have yet been able to replicate with a natural finish.  So mainly for me it is builder choice..

Mo, I try and avoid using lacquer based paints as I spray in the house.

If I did decide to go the lacquer route, I'd probably give Alclad a try.

Bob, I used Tamiya Chrome Silver X-11, mainly because I had it to hand. I masked a few panels off, and then appliedsome more Chrome Silver, with a few drops of Gun Metal to darken it up a bit.

I also hit a few panels with Tamiya smoke as this gives a slightly darker look.

Mucker, It's probably not your prep, that is the problem, I think it is just a case of the Gunze metalics being too delicate for masking over.

Shame as I love the Gunze products, particularly their paints.

Jason, That Oscar is a stunner already!!Thumbs Up [tup]

Guy, I would try fine sand instead of salt.

Karl, I love that finish on the F-84!!!

Guy - Interesting technique with the Maskol. I wonder if other liquid masks would work too. The different viscosities might give different results.

I made a bit of progress last week. No new pictures but I got the scratch building done on the cockpit, prepped the wings, flaps, and landing gear doors, and filled a few ejection marks. I decided to take the easy road on the main gear bays and model the dust covers instead of bulkheads and ribs. There's just too many small parts nearby to break off.

I should be able to shoot the interior green, do some detail painting, and hopefully get the major assemblies closed up this week. I'll follow with some pictures then.

Here is where I am on the ki-115. Decals are done. When the furure is dry I will weather the panel lines and then seal with a flat cote...most likely tomorrow.

Weclome back, Darson! and thanks for the nice comments, guys!

The weathering should be pretty straight forward but I've read the landing gear is fiddly. I've already broken some of the struts while sanidng, so we'll see if they hold up to  the rigors of alignment. If not, we may have an in-flight Tsurugi!

Frank: Keep your eyes peeled. I often see them on sale for around $15. Very affordable, straight-forward kit. If you still need one come October, let me know. I'll probably run across one at the local IPMS show.

I feel your pain, Jason, look at it this way: you live on a TROPICAL island. Blue skies (when there are no storms), beaches, beautiful island girls...qute a contrast from where I live! I'm green with envy.

Nice looking bird Charles. Looking forward to seeing it weathered. Mine has been decaled (Tail script only) and futured. Just a little bit of finishing up and joining the float to the plane is spose. Then its going to be done.

Darson, you do exist. I was beginning to believe you were a figment of someones warped imagination. BTW, am i allowed to play?

Welcome back Darren!

Jason, I was on Guam and never had any problems painting. Then again, I was using a single action badger 200 with canned air and shooting testors enamels. Hope you get some good painting weather soon, we want more pics!!!

Thanks, Jason. This one was one of the two factors I considered. I wanted to do one a little different and I was also tired of all the NMF planes I rhave built recently. To be honest it's the wrong shade of green. I used IJA Green instead of a lighter shade. I think the flat cote will tone it down a bit, but if you were a perfectionist it would stick out like a sore thumb...

Hey ho, I think im finished. I say think, as this extreme weathering is an addictive thing. You never really know if youve done enough. I built the stand for the plane but plan on putting it into a dio if time and inclination push me that way. All the markings except the tail marking and the work no. thingy under it, were airbrushed. Anyhoo, here she is in all her flakey glory,

Sorry for all the pics,

Charles I really like it in the green! As far as the IJA green that would have been the rite green.

GUY That is absolutely stunning!Shock [:O]Bow [bow] The weathering is top notch and not overdone.

Guy you are a weathering master!!! You've nailed the "heavily weathered" look without overdoing it...if that even makes sense. A better way to say it would be that it is exceptionally realistic.

Good stuff, big guy!
