ARMOR - Sherman Family Group Build

Rather than post individual comments, I'll just say that I'm really glad this thread is still alive. Everyone is doing a great job on their projects. I check the thread every day for updates.

As you may have read in another post, my 1:72 Sherman from this group build got a silver medal in my local contest this year. I was pretty darn proud. Here's a pic of how she appeared on contest day...

Should have your medal in the picture with it Murray. Once again congratulations, I've seen the work of the Saskatoon Modellers and know you were in tough in this competition.

Great job, Murry. Looks terrific!

Couple of questions that've probably been answered many times before:

1- Interior of a Firefly was white, but the hatches were od?

2- What's a good paint for a Firefly commander's uniform? DML conviently left the colors for the figures off the chart in the instructions!

1. correct, inside was white, inside of the hatches were the exterior colour

2. the colour that I used was a sort of Khaki in tone, here's a link showing some painted figures.

For the group badge, fine someone's post (like Robert) that has the badge in the post and right click on it. Then select properties. Look for the address line, and highlight it. Then do a copy (you can do this by pressing CTRL C). Finally open your profile and paste the address you copied into it with [ img] and [ /img] at the front and back (without the spaces). (CTRL V will do the paste).


I put the addresses below for you (take out the spaces after http: and before .jpg)

Glad to help, Frosty. Thanks and you have a great weekend, too. I have to work for a few hours sometime, but shouldn't be too bad (if the computer upgrades go well!!). The weathering, tools, and tracks (ya-ha) are about all that's left on the Firefly. Been a pretty fun build.

Have been through every kit I have and all the spare decals I've kept over the years (amazing the stuff you hoard) but I can't find any suitable decals for an Achilles other than the white 77 on Artillery red/blue square that comes with the old original Universal Carrier - funny 'cause the 77 was used post 1943 by RA units attached to Armoured Divisions and none of the other decals on the sheet belong to anything other than Infantry Divisions, and these used 43 not 77.

I have lots of spare Infantry Divison decals, but none of the ones I have are of Divisions that were equiped with Achilles. References for the Achilles in units is fairly thin on the ground.

Closest Division badge I think I can manage to make myself , is a vehicle of the Guards Armoured Division (The bull emblem of the 11th Armoured is just a bit beyond me, I think.) which is a dark blue shield with a red border and white eye in the centre. This would make it an Achilles of the 21st Anti-Tank Regiment. Funny, this just happens to be the one depicted on the box of the AFV Club Achilles (I have the Academy) but that pic also shows the vehicle has a Mickey Mouse camo pattern. Maybe I can cheat off that.

I am going to try and paint the Division emblem, so wish me luck - otherwise expect one very heavily muddied Achilles when pics are finally revealed.

Peter - white 77 on red over blue square ????

If so you can use it for the 5 A.T. Regiment, 4th Canadian Armoured Division, May 1945.
They had 2 batteries that used the Achilles.

I can e-mail you the rest of the markings if you'd like, they look fairly straight forward.

Frosty - You've certainly earned the badge.

I was just over at the site checking out Frosty's build (Very Nice Frosty) and I noticed that it's getting pretty full over there about 2/3 of us are done. I think that's pretty good.

I think I am at a stage where I can finally call her done!! Well, I may add a wash to the tracks and I have to shoot some dull coat on a few places, but here she is. I just couldn’t bring myself to cover the running gear and those MK tracks with mud. Let me know what you guys think.

Super job, Erick. How bad were the MK's to do? They sure look nice.

Robert, back to the question about uniform color (sorry)...my lhs said to use either Tamiya or PolyS Khaki. How close are these to what you've found to be correct? I'd rather use enamels, but I can go with acrylics.

I'm having "terrific fun" with the kit tracks (DML Firefly Vc). The links are molded with 3 studs on the face. I read that they probably shouldn't be there, so I've been shaving them off each link! I could have really increased my enjoyment by hollowing out the guide horns for each link, too, but decided I couldn't stand that much fun on one model. I have to spread these things out!!

Khaki should be a great starting point IMO. I have the Tamiya, and it's definitely close enough and after a little weathering should be just fine.

As far as the tracks go ... you could have left the studs on them ... type 62 tracks.


I think the end connectors are dished out just fine. Save that for your Tigers & Panthers.

Now you tell me!!! lol

Thanks, Robert. One of the reviews I read said that if you removed the studs, they would be like T-49's(?) and they were more common than the T-62's on Fireflys. But what a pain. It just takes a lot of time, but isn't hard to do. I've got close to 2/3rds of them done, so it's a little late to change my mind!! lol Also, I'm getting a BUNCH of little rivets I can use on another project. (Yeah, right! You can barely see them once they're cut off the links!) And don't worry, I have no intention of hollowing out the end connectors. I'll leave that madness to Peter!! lol
