Weekend Madness GB November 13-15th 2009

 Oh I am loving this GB!  Actually gets busier on a Monday!   Very cool!  Gotta be Dave's fault!

SOme excellent work going on here!  A superbly painted  Corsair of another era, an F-16ready for a masterpiece, a stunning teeny tiny Fokker, some odd-looking Japanese plane from Canada(?) and a sinister looking Herc.  YOWZA!!!  Any word from the others?  Are they still building?

Thanks Dave, I'll try to have it finished up by tonight or tomorrow night and post final pics! In any event, I've reclaimed the badge - good to know no one is a stickler for that sort of thing tho I was disappointed that I didn't finish in time!

Stikpusher, what were you using to mask the canopy on the F-16 if you don't mind my asking? Is that tape? One of my least favorite things to do is mask, and you seemed to make it look fairly easy with that stuff. I've been using liquid latex, which is easy to apply, just brush it on, but I tend not to get a very crisp line with it, especially for canopy work. 

 Amazing stuff! Karl 1957?  That has to be the oldest kit here!  Bet you make it look rather modern!

 I have been inside one of those Ac-130 Gunships!  They are very wicked.  A monster in the darkness with no where to hide!  Surviving an attack by one is very unlikely.

Fupes!  The man!  I think that Harrier looks better everytime I see it!  Same with Neu's Japanese Frank!   I can't put my finger on it but it seems to be missing something?  Hmmmmmmm thinking.........

Okay... I was stuck logged out all weekend

But I finished my little kit 23 hours and 17 minutes. Yay!

I'll be posting both progress pics, and finished pics soon.  Still need to take the final shots, but it's all completed.

Everybodys builds both finished and not, are all looking EXCELENT!!!

 Ah Neu Dupes will get it as it is an old joke from the 251 GB he did!  That's also where he got the endearing nickname of fupes!

 The spandex is a reference to all the cyclic enthusist that wear those tight fitting bicycle riding outfits. It has been rumored that it is not so much for riding comfort but to impress the girls... get it?  Dave's fault yet again!

Mac is taking a friendly swipe at Dupes (aka Lycra Man).  His avatar used be him standing beside his road bike, in full roadie (lycra) attire.  At least he wasn't Tri Guy.

Next time use a combo of both.  Use the tape to outline the frame(s) and then fill in the pane with the masking agent.  Once you're through with the color coats and clear, take a new blade and gently score the paint around the tape.  Take tweezers and gently peel the tape off.  It should take the mask off as well.

Sitrep:  With two and a half hours to go, the props are done and she's sitting on her wheels.  Fixing to glue the tanks on and then start the decalling.  The next pics will be of her finished.

I'm sticking a fork in her and calling this one done.  I need to repaint the guns, get some clear red and green paint for the wingtip lights, other than that I'm through.  Learned a few things as I underestimated this kit.  Not real happy with the cockpit glass, won't use primer next time.  Should I build one in this series again, I may forego masking and use black decal sheet for the windows.  Don't know if this specific a/c carried the minigun firing skeleton, but it looked cool so I added it. Here's the pics:

 Excellent Lewbud! Very spooky!  The Skeleton decal is too cool not to use I agree. The Canopy glass part? Is that from fighting the masking stuff on so small a part I am guessing.  I have had some luck using  those plastic dental flosser sticks to scrape and neaten up the edges. The plastic is soft enough not to scratch the glass plastic but sharp enough to neaten things up.  You can use your sprue cutters on it and custom sharpen the end as well. If there is future on the glass after I am done I simply use a dot brush and reapply the future with it and it covers things up nicely. If thepaint was damaged and the primer is showing through  with the black color one of those very fine tipped caligrophy type art pens can touch that up as well with a steady hand. Of corse  it may be small enough not to notice without the camera zoom!  Curse the zoom!   Depends on what you ate for dinner?

So, my model was a pretty easy Tamiya Shake&Bake, so I decided to do someting intresting with the weathering. I tried out this new technique for the wooden panels, tell me what you think

I'm pretty pleased with it, one of the quickest builds i've ever done, and it came out pretty well IMO...

The Shark is done.

Mach 2 1/72 Douglas A2D-1 Skyshark. This a/c took the A1D Skyraider airframe and installed two Allison turbojets in the lower hull, side by side. Each drove a prop, counter rotators, Although a very fast and very promising concept, pure jets soon outclassed her.

For all the crud that Mach 2 gets for their kits, this model was as satisfying to me as any I've built in a while.  A flashmonster for sure, but after cleanup it really represented it's subject well. I decided early on to build a real cockpit, which after a bunch of research revealed itself to be the original Douglas Skyray set up. I scratched it up without too much trouble.

 I like the Krupp as well!  A great subject that was used evrywhere the German army was! So many choices!. I especially like what you did on the wood effect!   Sweet!

 Bondoislectic build on that Navy Hybrid! Cpt Bondo sir!  Not something often seen to be sure!  Scratching pits? and you call me crazy? !  The paint job came out very well as well! Ok who or what is next up!  Dave I think we should call this the long weekend build cuz there is still plenty of good cool stuff showing up!

Thanks.  Will have to look into the fine tipped black pen Mac.  The grey is the primer I shot before the black.  I masked the edges of the panes with thin strips of Tamiya tape then filled the center with MicroMask.  With the exception of a couple of panes, I trimmed around the tape with a blade before I peeled it off to prevent the paint from lifting.  Like I said earlier, next time I won't use primer, just the color coats.

Bondo, great looking build also.  Those turbo jet fighters look way cool but had such a short service life with the introduction of the jets.   You did n amazing job on that Mach2 kit.

 Here is a god example of a what I meant. Cost $2 and I have one handy as I have a wife that spends my $ on such things!  Comes in handy though!

 First off I want to send a Job Well Done out to everyone!  The pics look awesome! Looks like everyone had a lot of fun being glued to their benches this past weekend

 As for me.  1/72 Fujimi Harrier.  Pics are below.  I want to start off saying this is my very first build that I have completed solo start to finish.  It was my first offical experience using the airbrush on a not practice model and only the second time I had ever used decals. I am pretty impressed with my work but I can definitely tell areas in which I need to have some practice in. I really enjoyed being able to work side by side with Dupes on this project.  He was able to offer LOTS of helpful advice. Lets see... the areas that I had trouble in.  Masking the canopy was a real challenge (and shows).  I also had difficulties with the decals... not dude to poor quallity but to lack of experience with them.  Overall it was a great experience!!  Sorry for the poor quality of pics... i took them this morning with my iPhone which usually takes decent pics.

Mia welcome to this asylum! You guys musta had fun together! My wife sat with me typing her paper most of the weekend, but she doesn't like pro football so I lost her on Sunday. I'm still working on the Skyray.

Those Harriers are sweet.  Now you need some Argie Skyhawks!
