Jeff, I'm so sorry about you grand father. That's awful... That looks great, maybe it took your mind off of him a little. When you look at it in the future it may bring a smile to your face. Best wishes.

Jeff, I too am sorry to hear about your Grandfather.  My best wishes go out to you and your family.

The Spitefire looks great.  Any seam issues aren't readily apparent.  I too will opt for a better quality kit next time around.

One of my favorite models Jeff! Well done.

Echo on all the condolences as well. May your family find peace and happiness when the grief passes.

Thanks fellas. He was 92 and had been in poor health for quite awhile(obviously) So this wasn't exactley sudden. I really appreciate all the kind words.

He was also a modeler. He has a pretty nice collection of wooden ships that he did. I really don't want to sound crass but I am laying claim to those.

Regards,

Jeff

Jeff - Such sad news . It is nice he had a good long life. I hope I can do the same.  Nothing wrong with wanting the ship models - better for them to go to someone who appreciates them then not.

Recently I saw a built up collection of built models being sold on ebay - The Auctions first description was ~ " From my Late Fathers collection, he had built models since he was a young boy "..

Man that broke my heart seeing his child sell off his models he built. Disapprove [V] I would have them displayed in a glass case in my living room if it had been me.

Jeff- Very sorry to hear about your grandfather, sounds like he led a long fruitful life.  I do hope you are able to get those ships, as I know you would cherish them for what they represent.  Nice job on the Spit, glad to see the pics!

Dave- You have tamed the beast!  Well done my friend. Approve [^]

OK, all lower decals now inplace. The lower rear and and nose ones were a real beast! I suppose reading the directions completely would have helped...LOL! More planning next time. now I need to let the Micro Sol work its' voodoo magic and then do touch ups with Insignia Red and Insignia Blue.

still going... (so much for a weekendWhistling [:-^])

Stik, awesome work you have there - looks like the real thing!

Well, lady and gentlemen, its finally complete. Took me about a week and a day but its finally done. I ran into a problem last night otherwise it woulda been done then. I pre-shaded with a black sharpie permanent marker. Seemed like a good idea, no? Then I airbrushed as usual. When I finished painting, I went to seal it with some dull coat. As soon as the dull coat hit the model, the paint covering the sharpie seemed to disappear and the marker showed through clear as day! It looked absolutely ridiculous and I came this close to crying. So at that point I had to repaint the camo scheme to cover up the panel lines again. So, I lost some time but I saved the model. I will not be using a sharpie again, and I simply don't recommend it either. Not sure why it happened but better safe then sorry. The only thing is, I've got a half finished B-25, also pre shaded with a sharpie soooooo I'm not sure how to procede with that.

In any event, I was afraid to coat the model with anything after that so it didn't receive a gloss coat for the decals. They look a little silvered but I can live with it overall. Hope you like it of course. I know its late, but better late than never!

Thanks

Jon

Carlos, the T-bird is looking great.

Jon, perhaps someone will comment on that effect.  Other than that it looks great.

I just sprayed MM flat clear acryl on the Martlet.  For some reason it has a dusty look to it.  Is this normal or is there something wrong with the clear coat?

Carlos- What an ambitious scheme, especially for a weekend!  Looking good, the touch ups should make it perfect. Thumbs Up [tup]

Jon- You have found out the hard way about Sharpies and models!  The question about them comes up here from time to time, definately a no-no.  Your SEA camo looks very well done indeed. Approve [^]

You are not kidding about ambitious- the build was easy but for the decals.... had to step away a few times... Not the quality mind you, but tryingto put them on after the build was 99% done was not wise... But now I want to build another F-16....Whistling [:-^] Well, as of this afternoon I got all the parts glued on, and decal film trimmed. Touch up painting will be done tomrrow, pics posted tomorrow afternoon.

Carlos it came out really well, and you definitely get the weekend credit, I would vote. Very clean and a difficult decal job for sure.

Roy, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what causes the dusty look so I can't help you there but I'm certainly anxious to see your Martlet.

Daywalker, I wish I would have known Sharpies were a modeling faux pas before I did this but, well, live and learn I suppose. It seemed like such a brilliant idea to me. But it always seems that I am too old too soon and too smart too late. As my first group build I had a lot of fun, despite the set backs. Lots of great builds here and a lot of good fun!

Roy-With or without thinner?  I use MM Acryl flat clear and find that it needs a little MM thinner if just for the retardant.

I did use the MM thinner for it at about a 3:1 ratio.  Some people have said that it needs to be 1:1.  My question is can it be removed and not damage the decals or paint?

Stik and Oddman,

Nice jobs there fellas!

Roy,

Bummer about the flat coat.  I had the same thing happen to me with an old can of Testor's Flat Coat.  Keep at it.  Looking forward to pics of your Cat.

Thanks Buddy.  I'm trying everything short of removing the paint (flame thrower) which I do not want to do.  I don't think I should do weekend builds.  The last one I never finished.  It needs a Simple Green or Oven Off bath.  I have a few more things to try tonight and if they do not work I will call it done and post a picture.

Hey Stik, that F-16 looks fantastic!  Odd, really nice, well done!  Interesting reading about the Sharpie, I'll remember that for the future.  My Hasegawa 'George' is coming along, but my computer won't recognise the memory stick from the camera, so, no pics!  Basically, I've painted the yellow wing strips, masked them off, and have now sprayed two coats of Humbrol no.28 enamel.  The first coat, yesterday, was too thin, but today's is OK, just have some dust and a hair caught in the paint, grrrr!  No.28 is possibly a tad too dark and creamy, but it's not too bad a fit I think.

As a few of you have this kit (Tiger 1) in your stash, just thought I'd point out a few things I came across during the build.

So here is my review of the kit.

The whole thing falls together quite well. But there are a few things to be aware of.

Step 2, parts A3 and A4, the instruction is not very clear, just cross reference it with the diagram in step 3 to make sure the wheels are the right way round (yes I did them back to front). The wheels sit quite loose on the axles, I didn't glue them down until the tracks were installed (to make sure they would sit correctly). This presented a problem in itself when handling the model and all the wheels fell of, it's a bit of a jigsaw to get them all back on.

The link tracks fit on the template a treat, there is a little tag to butt the first guide horn up to. I glued the tracks as I put them on the template, this resulted in the track adhering to the sprue, (luckily it was a hurried build so I was able to separate them without too much fuss). I would suggest gluing them up first, let them sit for 20 min, then shape them to the template. Look for the little bit of flash on part A22 (long track run).

The fit of the superstructure to the hull is a little loose (it may have been the 40 degree heat I was working in... metal expansion and all that) but check that out, ordinarily I would have squeezed it up in a vice to get the fit a bit tighter. (The hull was a little long as well).

The moulded on detail on the superstructure is a bit soft, in hindsight I should have scribed a line around where it joins to make them look like they were separate.

With the track runs assembled in two pieces (as an upper and lower run), they can be fitted and removed unless the rear mudguards (mud flaps?) are installed.

When fitting the cranking handle to the jack, watch it doesn't foul the air-filters.

The headlights are a little loose, and take a bit of patience to get them sitting right.

The positioning lugs on the track cable (on the side) don't line up with the hull very well, so dry fit and trim as necessary.

When joining the barrel halves I ended up with a join line, which I ordinarily would have welded up with stretched sprue, then sanded down, but due to time constraints, I didn't and ended up with a flat spot along the top of the barrel. And just check the fit of the poly-caps in the mantle, they require a little stuffing around to get them to sit correctly.

And the last step is fitting the side fenders. This does not have to be done last, their fitment does not interfere with track or wheel removal (and it makes the whole thing easier to paint if they are fitted).

All up, it's a neat little kit, almost shake and bake, I'll give it 8/10.

Brett.

Jon, Carlos, Way to go guys.  Bow [bow]Bow [bow]  Those a two beautiful looking builds.  I love the bomb load on that A-7 and the markings on the f-16 looks great.

Brett, thanks for the build write up on that Tiger.

Roy, you can spray future over top of that powdery dull coat and it should get you back to where you started.  I stopped using MM flat clear for that very reason.  I now use future mixed with Tamiya flat base.

Still a few stragglers, we still want to hear from you and see your finished builds.  Keep at it all.

Thanks everyone for making this so fun and enjoyable.  Next time I hope it doesn't coincide with FSM shinanigans Wink [;)]

Ok, I've cleaned my plate and got up from the table.  I stuck a fork in this Monday, but I still had a few pieces to go like the guns and the wingtip lights.  Got the guns mounted, and then boinged the starboard tip light to who knows where.  Made a few passes on a UMT (Unidentified Mechanical Thingie) in Killbox Alpha.  Tried Mac's suggestion about the pen to try and clean up the canopy, but didn't work real well (not gonna blame Dave for this).  Anyways, here she is in all her armed glory.
