ME-262: Reich Defender II 10/09-7/10

Dang, Dirk - that's one heluva paint job.  I'm a pretty patient person, but I don't know if I'd have the patience to hand paint all them squiggly lines, LOL

Thanks for the kind words Frank. Yes, the squiggles were all hand painted on. I then heavily thinned some more of the fuselage color and dusted over the top. Looking at it a day or so later I think I might have gone a bit to heavy. Oh well live and learn.

Right on fellas, we'll plan to start the next one around 6/1/10 then.  Already looking forward to it!

Dirk- Excellent job on that night fighter camo, how did you paint it?  Are those spots on the fuselage done with a brush?  I like it very much.

This is the first time I've taken this approach at a paint job. Painting each component individually and then assembling. Well the camo almost done. next I need to tone it all down a bit.

The bottom was finished off with RLM22.

Moving on to the front wheel well. For this I decided to go withthe PE part rather than the kit part.

I too am up for a FW-190 build if the end date is close to the end of the year. I am in too many BGs now that end mid year. I am also thinking of trying to get a Horton Ho-229, I didnt know there was a flying wing near the end of WWII. Its really a cool looking aircraft. It never saw service though. Check out the link.

In regard to the RDIII im good to go whenever its decided. Didnt mean to push on the start date. I have 2 in the stash so im good. I will be starting a 190 next week for the SSGBIII either way. As far a Pz goes im game but I think we have some more aircraft to explore first, like a He 100 or something weird.

Hi Frank -- I'd agree that a direct follow-on from RD2 is the logical way to go to launch RD3. For myself I have heaps on my build schedule and it'll certainly be later in the year before I can add a 190. That said, I have several potential kits and plenty of markings in hand and am contemplating maybe two entries in 1:48th, late-As in Rammjager markings probably... And I might finally get some paint on that 1:72 Airfix D-9 I built for the Farewell Airfix GB about three years ago but which is still in its box, forlorn on the shelf!

Mike -- stunning finish, the flat coat has so drawn everything together, beautiful build!

Steve -- my issue with the red notwithstanding, yours really is a fantastic piece of work, so very well done and a very technical job too -- full marks!

Randy -- congrats on becoming a grandpa! My fiance is soon to be a grandmother for the sixth time (she started early...) and apparently the youngest members of the family call me Grandpapa Mike -- makes me feel rather, um, mature!

Oh, Frank -- any luck on finding out what to thin the MicroScale system finishes with? I abruptly have a hankering to give then a whirl! I might be about to score the Academy A/1a in 1:72 as well, so when we cycle back to 262s (RD5, that would be, right?) I'll have plenty of material to work with!

Well considering I haven't built anything for this GB yet!

Don't mind when it starts, as long as it runs for 6 months.

I might have a chance of clearing the build pile by then.

Right on fellas!  I already have all of you on my list (the GOOD list!) for this one!  Should we wait for this one to end first?  Should we start it soon, or wait a month or two?  This one ends in May FWIW.

I've been watching closely for you to start the 190 GB, Frank.

I built the Tamiya 262 a few years back and loved it.

Frank, I've still got that Tamiya 190 D-9 sitting under the bench I started last December, with nothing glued.

Having said that, I have got a Trumpy E 100, and a 262 to build for this GB before I start anything else.

And then there's the BoB GB!

I'm trying my best with the landing gear painting but I always seem to struggle with this bit so bare with me.

Frank I've got a 190 in the stash so you just give the word, got one P38 to do first but I will defo be in for RD3.

Mike- Love that overhead shot!  I see what you mean about the stripe, I did the same thing on my recently finished FAA Corsair.  Since it is looking so good, I say you don't have to start again (but, as penance you must build a 190 for the upcoming FW-190 GB!)

Steve - One picture? That just won't do! How can you deprive a sensory organ, such as the eyes, this beautiful Messerschmitt you have built? Hmmm? I think I speak for us all when I say, "we demand more pictures sir!" She looks stunning... don't hold back.

Well guys, im calling this one done as far as the stand alone is goes. In recap its the Tamiys clear edition and was perfect in fit and loaded with detail. Did I mention that this was my first Tamiya kit after 30 something years of building kits and what a surprise it was to build one of these. Cant wait to build another. Used MM enamels with a panell wash and pastel powders for weathering. I have started on building a base for it so stay tuned for that. I will post it here.

Thanks Frank for hosting the GB and like #1 it was fun. Hurry up on the 190 version build as that is whats next on my bench and would love to build it for that.

Jeremy thank you for your kind words about the Testers kit I did a lot of learning on that build, should have decals for it next week so I can call it finished. The Monogram 262 kit looks worse than it is judging from the kit I have. The only trouble so far has been in the nose area. It would have worked out fine had I decided to display it open. The wing went together very well as did the rest of the fuse. So far the only really bad fit I have found from dry fitting is at the wingroot, will need to do some wide gap filling there with shims. The engine nauticels will need a bit of work but not much I have one together now. Oh and dont forget the Revell-O-Gram nose weights for a trike gear, this would be a tail sitter for sure. Should have more WIP pictures soon

Oh and yeah I am now offically a Grandfather My Daughter gave birth to a man child of 8lbs 1oz and 20 inches long this morning at 3:12am PST. Havent needed wings to fly all day.

Steve - Nice work! I like the red outline, brings the eye right into the clear part. You're putting it in a diorama with the car? Nice!

Mike -  Love that camo! She's a beautiful Swalbe for sure. If you look at it from directly above, are the stripes all at the same angle?

Randy - I had the Revell kit and after taking a look at it, I gave it to a friend and decided to build the Dragon kit. Maybe not the smartest thing to do but that Revell kit looked pretty rough to me. I'm sure you can work your magic on it especially after seeing what you can do with a Testors kit.

Hey Vetterman, Great to see one of the Monogram kits here.  Looking forward to progress on the Me262.

Randy- Excellent work so far!  Is the nose completely sealed up, or will you be able to add weights into it to prevent the tail sitting?  Sounds like Mike has got you the info on the paints you need. 

This is only a guide as different computer monitors read the colors a bit differently, but this color swatch shows the 74/75/76 colors.

RLM 74/75/76

Vetteman, RLM 75 is also called grauviolett (grey-violet) so it does have a violet tinge to it, different makes of paint may vary on this but I think yours sounds about right. Good luck with your mottle, my advice is to thin the paint a lot and spray very close but with a low PSI. Others may chime in with more advice as they know far more than me.

Thanks Mike and Steve for your encouragement. It does look like this kit is going to take a bit of work, I sanded the filler and found I will need to add more in a few places. I also found it is a tail sitter so will have to add some weight to the nose. But hey thats part of modeling isnt it

Mike I want to do a mottled paint job on my build as I have never done one before, gotta try something new ya know. I have Model Master Acryl RLM 74/75/76 and that is grey over grey I thought. The RLM 75 looks to have a lavender color to it so I am not sure if that is correct or not. Maybe a miss marked bottle of paint ?
