ME-262: Reich Defender II 10/09-7/10

Patton the destructions on my academy kit call for silver in the bays. But left them unmasked whilst doing primer and stuff so I just might do a wash and be done with them. As mentioned things HAD to move quickly and cleanliness and roughness with functionality became the norm. HTH!!

SIGH! Might miss the contest date with mine next weekend but ..... well it will be ready for next year!! Engines still not together but looking to remedy that. Will be having a couple more residents in my house next week. Long story, but will be getting the two cats the ex and I had whilst together. Will be reunited and will be including them in pics occasionally they are pure bred British Shorthairs, sisters, and will be MINE. GF won't be happy but.... well, like dogs, who will be more loyal and give an unconditional love. Will just have to make sure I shut the man cave door when I leave the house hehe.

I am one of the ones straggling behind also and may be in danger of not making the revised end date but I am giving it my all and advancing my skills in the process. The problem with the kit I am doing (old hasegawa) is that there is quite a bit of detail missing fromthis bird even if you don't decide to open anything up! I have PE sets for the Revell kit which are helping but there is still a lot of detail missing from the wheel well area. I will post some progress pics in the next few days to show what I have come with so far. I guess the motto should be keep on truckin'.

BTW any one have any ideas on the color for the wheel well area? RLM 02? Most color pics I see look like there was very little paint used in this area but I don't know if that was just because most of these were taken after these aircraft where taken apart and studied or from the germans lack of time and supplies at the end of the war. Any opinions are welcome.

Yeah and the greenish background to previous posts I see.....Maybe they are experimanting on a post that Crushlikins posted about the background being bright.....don't know, wierd I must say. The pics still show that is a plus and welcomed. Still haven't gotten the engines together but hope to get some BIG progress this week as the contest is in 12 days!!! ACCCCKKK!!!! I went fishing, caught 4 !&*!%@%#* starfish!!!! lol that time for that catch would have been better spent at the bench, but the unknown chance of nice fish is very alluring as we fisherman always know hehe!!!!

I can explain the 'medium scale aircraft' thingy... The awards were a bit rushed and confused. Someone else accepted the 'best in category, small scale' as mine was on the 'medium scale' list??? They also called the wrong name.. I am Jason not Jeff. After the ceremony I straightened the error out and received the 'medium scale award' I just hope the fella who accepted the 'small scale' had a good entry.

The pit on the big Trumpy 262 is painted and Futured and just needs an oil wash and some dry brushing before I cable it all up.

Spike I have been using surfacer 500, bit thicker than the others, fills gaps rather well.

The first contest it was entered in was peer judged and I felt that the larger entries gathered more votes in that format. Each entrant was allowed to vote on their pick each category. The last contest was a points system where there could be multiple gold awards depending on the quality of entries. Judges from the host model club scored the entries. Only one 'best of category award'

The bold red banner made me blush as I know your Me-262's would score higher in comparison.

Keep up the good work Richie it's coming along really well. I love the Mr Surfacer myself, which grade are you using? I like the Tamiya smoke also, nice for post shading etc.

I entered 'OCC & mini Me' in a contest held @ Fredericton New Brunswick on Saturday hosted by CAMS model club (Central Area Modeler's Club) And took 'Best of category' for 'Aircraft 1/72 scale & smaller' It was a points format, I believe the nifty display base & custom K-rad helped score it above the rest as there were excellent entries in this category.

Well it was rainin' so got some bench time that I just loved!!! Got the wing on my bird, filled it tonight. Have to go over a few bits again where the Surfacer  sucked inside. but otherwise a decent fit I must say. painted and got the engine bits off the tree. Did a quick burntish irony color then willclose up the rear section of engine and fill seams in the cowl. The office fit like a glove and will look decent under a closed roof. Final coat of Tamiya smoke. I did the exhaust stain on my Jake with it using it for the first time and was ecstaitic!!!

Thanks Frank!!!! Got the office in the fuse and have the Wing bits off the tree and a couple bit in the center section glued in. Will probably glue them up 2nite and then start filling pnel lines and checking fit to fuse. More pics soonish, Might be going fishing Saturday but calling for rain. If the sky is cryin' then I be at the bench!!!

Just out of curiosity and a somewhat decent price I went and bought the Hase 1/32 Bf109G-6!!!! 1/32, ME!!!!???? One day....

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what that thingamajig on the left side of the office tub that obviously was important enough to make a seperate part for is????? Am thinking it might be the throttle linkages or something.

Not sure what the linkage is on the side of the cockpit tub.

I always figured it was throttle or flap related as those are the levers on the port console.

Well, I got the office together, not fussing much over it as I am trying to keep it OOB. Wasn't anything to worry bout just laziness as to why it took so long lol. Hopefully 2mora will get it into the fuse and see where I'm at then. In the mean time a couple pics to show at least a lil step forward.

This sounds a good technique, and an excuse to go buy some isopropyl at long last. It's kinda scary wondering what a plane model will look like without panel lines -- toylike? Hopefully accurate, but... It reminds me of the 262 at Hendon, and how strange it looked without visible divisions in its skin -- I wondered about that at the time!

Mike I have been using a technique described in a Reader's tip using Mr. Surfacer on panel lines with a toothpick then rubbing it away with a.......well SEVERAL cotton buds(q-tips) dipped in alchohol to gently rub away the excess without sanding away detail. The tip reccomends letting the surfacer dry for a few minutes then going at it with the cotton bud. I have been just fine after a couple days, Just takes a few more minutes to soften and then rub off but it does work quite well. If it's not good enough, then just redo the process. If you want totally flush filled panel lines then a final wet sand with 2400 and finer gradesto get a glass smooth finish. It is indeed laquer based and smells but will still come off with alchohol as described with no ill effects to the plastic. PM inbound Mike!

Don't know why but I bought Revell's 1/72 262 for future builds/decompression/AB practice type job hehe

Mike, Mr Surfacer is lacquer based.

I applied mine with a paint brush.

Gunze acrylics need thinning before you can spray, but they are still the best paints out there.

Tell me, did you apply the Mr Surfacer with brush or airbrush? Is it an acylic product??? Thin with water or a proprietory thinner? I've heard Gunze acrylics are already sprayable-thin in the bottle but a spray-putty must be a different ballgame...

Mike, I got mine at Hearn's Hobbies on Flinders street. I believe they might do some mailorder. Might also try Victorian Hobby Centre on Swanston st. HTH some The Hobby Place on Lonsdale st. might also be another place to look.

John- Non essential, NON ESSENTIAL???  Oh, that had to hurt.  Is your house sold then?  Hope this means that life will settle down for you soon.  No worries on the build, I would still really like to see it finished though!

 

Yes my house is sold pending all of the inspections and such.  My wife and I put an offer on a 1900 sq ft colonial less then a mile away.  The owner signed our offer, but it is a short sale which means she owes more then what the house is being sold for, so we have to wait to get her mortgage lenders approval on the offer.  Basically they have to agree on how much they are willing to lose.  She is not paying her mortgage.

I will get the Mistel done no doubt about it.
