Thanks Soulcrusher. I spent quite a bit of time last night doing web searches on Tobin and 609 Squadron. That book came up frequently. I would love to find it and read it. I was able to confirm that he flew Spitfire K9997 for the September 15th combat where he got the Do-17. It was damaged upon landing when a fuel truck drove across his path as he was landing and clipped his landing gear and was out of service for the rest of the day. Now to find that aircraft's code letter...Hmm

Well that looks frikkin awesome Damon. I can see the effects of the dot filters, did you use oils???

I did use oils I used a flesh color white blue and greens. I brushed them front to back until I liked the look.

Damon

Yeah i thought so, it looks very similar to the effects i get with oil....I'ts a very subtle and lovely effect...

Stickpusher there is a great book that has alot of info on Tobin and a couple of other American pilots that he flew with in the RAF before the US joined the war. The book is called The Few. In one picture there is a Hurricane that has a squadron code of  XR. There is also another picture with Tobin standing infront of a Hurricane with a bunch of other pilots that says they were assigned to the 71st squadron.

Oh yes, my intentions are to make my Spit as one flown by "Red" Tobin of 609 Squadron, preferable the one he flew on Sept 15th that is depicted in a painting downing a DO-17. If anyone knows the serial number and code for that particular aircraft, I would be grateful. I have been able to track down one Spit he flew by serial number, but do not know if that is the one he flew for that combat, and what the Squadron code letter was for that aircraft. My reasons for choosing him is that he is a local (Los Angeles native) who joined the RAF, flew in the BoB with 609 Squadron, one of the better scoring squadrons of the battle, and was a founding Eagle Squadron member. He would be shot down and killed  over France before America entered the war.

I finished watching A Piece of Cake this midday. Nice to see those beautiful birds in flght but I must admit that I prefered the novel, barely remembered after all these years to the series. Perhaps a remake  since there are now a few airworthy Hurricanes, not to mention what can be done with CGI to really add to the visual feast....Whistling

Well I am still plugging along on my Spit. This week I completed the instrument panel and put on some Testors clear glue over the instruments. I am almost at the point where I can assemble the fuselage when all the interior painting is done.

Looking really good B-17. Paint work looks great and cant wait to see the fiddly bits put on it.

I also have not had a lot of bench time lately but I have made progress on the Do-24. All the glass masked and fuselage buttoned up. The fuselage seams are giving me some problems but im almost done with them and then hopefully on to some paint.

Damon well done on a wonderful job, painting and weathering look spot on Yes

Cheers....

Ditto Nice job Damon

Got some progress done on my 109.  Its been a while but things got in the way.  The 109 is all painted and is waiting a coat of future after some detail parts are added.

The slats area as been repainted to the standard undercoat the Luftwaffe used (RLM02). Now I got to get the landing gear on.  More to come, sooner I hope than last time.

Damon: The Fulmar looks splendid! I'd think the blue on the fin should be as Simpilot said the same width as the others unless of course your reference material shows different.

Damon she is looking great mate!!!!Toast Answer to your question, I do think the blue does need to be a bit wider. All three colors should be equal width.

Nice work Nomad. That canopy looks like it was fun to mask.

I have the cockpit all done on my 109 and I'm ready to close it all up. Have not been much in the bench mood the last couple of weeks so I need to get moving.

I have more WIP pictures got the Fulmar painted future applied and stickers. Hopefully do panel wash and I want to try some dot filters because seaplanes are weathered more than other types of planes. Hope you enjoy. I am wondering what you guys think about the blue stripe on fin should it be wider?

Damon: Great looking work. I hate PE with a passion but you've done a heck of a job with it.

H.Hunter: Wow, both of them look great. I assume you display them together?

Stikpusher: Oh yeah I remember 'Piece of Cake' I taped it gosh I has to be what maybe 15 years ago or so and watched it over and over. I wonder if I can find the VHS tape and even if it's in watchable condition. I have the novel somewhere too, again it's been years since I read it.

Wow, some seriously beautiful work here being completed. I have not had the building muse in me much lately, but today I watched the first two episodes of "A Piece of Cake". I read that book some 19 years ago, but have never seen the series until now. Even tough they switched from Hurricanes to Spitfires for the series, I have enjoyed the first two episodes immensely. After watching those beautiful birds fill my big screen TV the muse has returned. I am now gonna break out my Spit and continue work tomorrow to partake here. More work to be posted soon.Whistling

Damon--Very nice indeed.  I applaud your choice of more obsure subjects such as the Fulmar,

HH--Very nice work for a newbie to the AB.

Well, I have finally located a PE interior for the Do-17 Z 2 direct from Eduard.  I also found resin MG 15s and other armament from an outfit called Goffy.  I also bought a resin Ju 88 interior by Czech Master that might have some useful pieces.   Hope to post some WIPs soon.

Damon the Fulmar looks beautiful so far, great cockpit. Keep up the good work.

Hunhunter, keep up the good progress, I especially like the 109. I did a Spitfire in those markings a couple of years ago, it was my first kit when I returned to the hobby.

Cheers...

Damon, is that 1/72??? If so my hats off to you with the PE, I KNOW how it tests your patience!! Used it on my Swordfish.

Yes it is a 1/72 Vista kit. I have never used Airwaves PE and am very happy with the quality of the PE set I used on this project. Thanks everyone for the comments hope to do more today. Big Smile

Hunhunter Those revell kits are lots of fun. I still build them I have 2 109's to build in the stash. Nice job they look good Yes
