Simpilot,
It is quite a kit! A BIG kit. Still not sure where this beastie is going to reside when I'm done. To be reconciled later.
While the forums were down I got a fair amount of color on the BIG beastie. There will be some touch up needed in places but, with the mauve camo I did not go for a complete coverage in assuming (yes, artistic license) it was field applied.
I got the middle section of the lower wing on but, did not get the struts on until today. That delay bit me in the behind today. . I failed to plan ahead by getting the struts painted and ready to install right after the wing was installed. Where the struts anchor to the right side of the fuselage weren't too bad, the left side is another story as evidenced by the picture. Looks like the clear coat for decals is going to be a bit delayed kids.
I've gotten the engine mostly assembled. I used the cylinders that are shown as not used. These cylinders allow you to scratch your own push rods. I used .019" stainless steel wire.
THis was as close as I could get to show that yes I did paint the spark plugs. Yes, they actually do have a hex pattern.
Here is the ignition wire harness. There is one for left and right sides. I used quarter round stock that was filed down towards the fore end. The wire is .010" lead wire I purchased at a local fly fishing store.
Cheers
Dave
With enough thrust, pigs fly just fine.
Brother Dave. I love the Camo and your attention to detail is outstanding. Love everything about it so far. On another note I have sent several e-mails with no reply Is all OK.
Bob
Dave I am loving that!!!!!!! Beautiful camo and detail work!!!!! Sometimes I wish I had the room to keep 1/32 just for the potential for detail!!!! I am more than occupied with my 1/72s however lol!!! Excellent work mate!!!
Nicely done Dave. One small note. The Junkers J.I sprayed 2 tone camouflage was applied at the factory level, and tended to vary in pattern.
Stachel...unconfirmed by Armee means unconfirmed!!!!
The engine is now done. There was a bit of a hiccup, in that the ignition harness/loom v1.0 didn't fit. Esthetically, it looked better. Functionally, it bombed. It made the width of the upper half of the engine too wide. This was discovered when I mocked up the engine hatches and realized, painfully, that it was not going to work. Yes, I will be displaying it with the hatches open but, all one had to do was eyeball down the sides from the front and see that there was no way the hatches were going to close. Grrrrrrr The new harnesses v2.0 were scratched from .020" flat stock, while the wires were done with .010" lead wire. The harnesses were painted with Vallejo Light Rubber and, the wires were painted with Dark Rubber. The wire tips had Vallejo Brass applied with a toothpick.
The exhaust stack was base coated with Tamiya NATO Black. I then painted it with Vallejo Dark Rust. The shaded portions were done up with Vallejo German Black Brown darkened with a couple of drops of Black. I finished it of with a light dusting of MIG Standard Rust.
Dave, all I can say is WOW! Excellent detail and work!
Looking forward to seeing it finished.
B17Pilot Dave, all I can say is WOW! Excellent detail and work! Looking forward to seeing it finished.
Awesome work!!!
Aaron – very nice couple builds. Look forward to the finished product(s)
Dave – amazing pit/fuselage work, truly inspirational stuff. The grain/wood effect is just fantastic. The kit also seems awesome in detail.
B-17 – Great start to your J-3!
Well I learned a lesson today in my first few years of model building. The 109 will have to be bought again and redone... I tried taking some paint off of the spinner with laquer thinner. BAD IDEA! it melted and warped everything. this wasent the first screw up. the canopy isnt sitting on it strait, the anteana kept breaking off, and the canopy masking didnt go well. So I'm pretty sure I will be redoing this build. I have until the end of October so better to screw up now than a week from the ending!
Everyones builds are looking great! keep up the good work everyone!
B17Pilot & Simpilot,
Thank you for the kind words and following of this thread. I'm hoping to see more of others builds.
Jmart,
Thank you for the compliment. The detail on their kits IS awesome!
WW2psycho,
Bummer about your 109. Yup, lacquer thinner is "HOT". Did you paint with enamel or acrylic? Keep the kit to try out new techniques on, that way if it goes sideways on you it won't eat a new kit. Looking forward to 109 v2.0
Well, I got the wings on today and I have to say this beast got big fast. It'll be about a 20" wing span and, once the wheels are painted and on it'll sit about 4.5" tall. The outer panels for the lower wing are just pushed on. No glue incase I wish to do the decals off plane. The struts weren't too bad to assemble. Just make sure you keep them straight as they are very location specific. I place a small piece of tape on each with the part number and, left it on right up until I was ready to use it. I won't be putting the outer panels on the upper wing until the glue has set over night. This is no rush as I still have to get a few more parts painted. Prop, scarf ring and gun, wheels , some fiddley little PE parts that go over the elevator hinges.
WOW that IS getting BIG very quickly!!!!!!! Excellent work mate!!!
Thank you. I've been eyeballing the decals with some trepidation. The upper wing crosses are the largest I will have ever worked with. To top it off they are going over corrugation. This should prove to be interesting. Well, so far the kit hasn't thrown me any screwballs. I'm hoping the decals are the same.
I did a dry fit with the upper outer wing panels (sorry no pics) and, all I could do was to start giggling. It's a freaking beast!
This is as far as the 109 got before disaster...
Ouch! Now that just hurts. Good luck with v2.0.
Looking good peeps.
Sorry to hear about the '109 psycho, I did a similar thing to a 1/72 swordfish over in anti-submarine GB (melted the front of the fuselage trying to straighten it).
OK Gave got some build time again. Here is where I got to before I have to take a few weeks off
IP, mostley easy but melting the decals into the exact position wasnt easy.
Radio
Pilots office
Observer Station
Very Pistol Flares? cockpit framing
Cockpit deck and gunner station
More soon
Andrew
Andrew that is looking great!!!! Looking forward to seeing another stringbag come together!!!
Oooooo sounds like the 1/72 one is FUBAR!!! Here is a shot of the !/72 one I finished last year.
And a scratchbuilt cradle for the fish.
Andrew,
It looks like you are off to a very good start. I like the IP! WIth your future pics, would you mind placing something next to your sub/assemblies? Something to give the rest of us a sense of scale. I built Tamiya's 1/48 version and was impressed with the size of it. I can only imagine the size of this beast.
That is a very nice Stringbag and, you rigged it in 1/72 scale. That makes my brain hurt!
Simpilot, more SNAFU than FUBAR, you could still recognise it. And yours looks great. What brand is it?
Hughes, finished the cockpit sub assembly last night so will post some updated pics with a sizeing item soon.
Thanks Hughes!!! yeah the rigging wasn't too bad actually, just had to take my time with it.
Thank you as well Andrew!!! It is a kitbash of Airfix and RoG. I used the fuse, lower wing and landing gear of the Airfix kit and the upper wing, engine, and tail feathers from the RoG kit. Added partial PE sets from both Airwaves and Novo. I say partial sets because I didn't realize there existance until I had already started and had closed up the fuse!!! Added what I could to the interior and moved on lol.
Glad to see there is still some work going on over here, unfortunately I haven't been so productive myself.
The Junkers is looking great, I almost picked up the Junkers monoplane on tuesday but restrained myself as my early aviation stash is growing at an alarming rate.
The swordfish are nice too, I have the Matchbox / Revell kit and may do it in the silver scheme before this build is done.
WW2psycho, you might try a post in the aircraft section, someone may have a spare prop and spinner. It would be a shame to see all the work you've done be abandoned at this point.
I am looking forward to the pics, as I am very curious to the scale of this one.
Aaron,
Thank you for the compliment. I understand about the stash growing at an alarming rate.
I spent several hours today with just decals. Wingnut says not to use decal solvent with their kits but, there was just no getting around it with the corrugation on this beastie. The crosses still have some spots that are not snuggled down yet. I am just going to have to get back to them tomorrow. There just wasn't enough hours in the day to get that done and all of the other things that HAD to get done today. The decals are by Cartograph. Thin and very strong. I only had a couple of near disasters with them. Both, my doing. the first was the Jasta number on the left side had started to silver. The gloss coat was not quite substantial enough. Fortunately everything had not set up yet so, I was able to get the edge of the decal lifted with a toothpick and got a couple of drops of Future under it and worked it through. No silvering! For the Jasta number on the right side, I preemptively put on a drop of Future and then the decal. Worked perfectly.
The last near disaster occurred when I was pulling the last of the Iron Crosses out of the water to put on the upper wing. These are about two inches across. The whole bottom corner folded over on itself. OH . . Long story short I got it unfolded ( a first for me) and on the wing.
Dave that is really looking the part now!!! WOW that is a beastie!!!!!!!! Looking forward to seeing the prop go on!!
I can't wait until WnW releases their Gotha. I did get the prop and the Parabellum LMG14 painted today.
Here is my first attempt at painting a laminated prop. I used Vallejo New Wood and German Orange Ochre for the wood and Oily Steel for the prop boss. Comments on it? I'm leaving it for now and I'll come back to it tomorrow and, see if I still like it. I may just waterboard it and start over.
The Parabellum was built up as per instructions with a couple of small additions. The rod that attaches from the ammo drum to the front of the gun is stainless wire. The barrel got snapped off at some point so I added a replacement made of hypodermic tubing. The gun was base coated with Tamiya NATO Black and then painted using Vallejo Gun Metal Blue. This was far too blue to my liking so it was toned down with Vallejo Black Glaze followed by some built up layers of a black wash. Again using Vallejo. I hit the raised areas lightly with a #2 pencil. The grip panels and stock were painted with Vallejo old Wood followed with and couple of quick wipes of W&N Burnt Umber oil paint.
OHHHH that looks good!!!!!!! The Maxim is amazing!!! The prop is outstanding as well!!!! Maybe more laminations, but as you get closer to the hub the lines would get awfully thin. But as for effect, I would leave it. Awesome work mate!!!!
Thank you for the compliments, critiques, and following along. There are a total of seven "laminate" layers to this prop as I painted it. Two are on the back side that you can't see as I did not take a side long pic. I did entertain the idea about more layers but, as you said those line start to get real thin, real fast. My hands are steady but, not that steady. I showed my wife the Maxim and she liked it. Then I said that I wanted a 1:1 version and, her reply was, "How does one go about otaining one?". Sometimes I cant tell if she is encouraging me or, enabling me. . I think today I'll seal up the decal with a clear coat and, by the time my stretch of work is done it will be nicely cured. Then the real fun starts. Weathering!
LMAO you never know sometimes!!!!! I would get on the net and look around and when/if you find one show it to her and let her know you're serious and THEN you will get the real reaction, and THEN see if she was serious as well!!! Looking forward to more pics!!!!!!!
I like the laminated prop, and the MG is really nice.
I was going to give your wood grain method a try on some tool handles. I'm trying to figure out how you don't end up with the whole piece the oil color. Do you just sort of dry brush the oil paint on to give streaks, then wipe it down after it has had a little time to dry?
Hughes great looking kite, I hope my stringbag turns out as well.
Well current update. Cockpit cage it together, and everthing else except for a few paint touch ups done and ready for fuselage to go together. Also included as per request a some scaling items. First items were photographed on a 1x1cm grided mat. second is a bottle of tamiya paint. Third sackboy wanted to say hello.
