Spike, Thanks for the comments. The Galland hoods are my favorites. I do wish I would have used the Eduard national crosses on the wings. The Tamiya decals are REALLY thick and difficult to hide the edges. As for kit decals, both Eduard kits have top notch decals that are super thin and easy to work with. Thanks again for the comments and hope to see more of your fantastic work here on the forums!

 Merry Xmas all!

Fellas - thanks for the responses on the paint. Exactly what I wanted to hear! Will get the paint on tomorrow night hopefully...

Mobious - that's a TOP looking plane you have there. Really impressive job!! It's builds like that that I'm always trying to emulate - the paint job looks superb.

Stumpjumper -- echoing the guys here, acrylic over acrylic should be no problem at all, if you're spraying. The mechanical force of a brush might lift the previous coat, but that's the only danger. My standard armour technique is acrylic paints with a base colour or colours, then a shadow/dirt shading on the underside, under the sponsons, etc., then the "fade coat" which is the base colour lightened, on top, all in Tamiya acrylics, and I can safely say I've never had a problem in nine straight builds using this method.

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Stumpjumper- I have never used the Extracrylics, so I can't comment on them exactly.  However, I use Tamiya acrylics almost exclusively and have never had a problem with successive coats damaging the ones underneath.  One of the great advantages of acrylics is their ability to cure quickly.  One test would be to try it out on a piece of scrap.

Spike- Excellent!  Glad you will be building for RD IV.  I really can't wait to see your work on a Ju-87! Toast

Mo- That is freaking fantastic work!  Always loved that scheme as well with the "heavy" badge on the cowl, stunning build all around. Bow Down

Merry Christmas!Yes Hope I get to do a little Christmas shopping for myself too!Yes

I rigged the antenna while working on a Bf 110. The drop tank didn't get installed, but I'm counting this one as finished. It depicts an un-"Blinkered" A-8 that may have been flown by Maj. Walter Dahl, who was appointed Kommodore of JG300 and also downed 36 Heavies.

StumpJumper, I wouldn't bother with a layer of future in between especially as your using the same brand of paint, I've never had any problem post shading like that. Nice detail work your adding Yes I'm enjoying watching.

Thanks Mo. The weather here in the UK has brought the country to a halt, so since I (for once) had all the paints, thinners etc I need, i have been doing nothing much else than the 190!

Can I check something with you guys - I've got the green camo on the wings (Xtracrylics) and want to lighten a couple of the panels with a paler version of the green. I assume that just painting it on without a layer of Future is a no-no, as acrylics on acrylics will result in the first coat being attacked by the thinner in the second? The temptation to cut the corner and give it a try is high, but results could be catastrophic.... Any advice much appreciated.

Stumpjumper, Cool stuff with the brake lines/ Guitar strings. Those strings are difficult enough to bend when there tuned on the guitarSmile The seams could be casting lines on the oleo scissors, that's what I'd call'em anyway. Great work, Keep the pics coming!

Thanks Mo, I appreciate that!  May just build that -219 later next year. Wink

Sounds like a lot of interest in the Stuka, so let's do that one for RD IV!  I'll put together a badge soon as I can, but until then- here's some details:

Begins 2/1/11 and runs for 6 months ending 7/31/11

Must have fun!

Any variant (A, B, C, D, G) which served between 9/1/1939 and 5/8/1945 over Europe

Any scale, OOB or as much AM as you can put into it

Prior works in progress welcome, anything before final assembly

As many photos as you can share of the build

Hi Krow - thanks very much for this, that's a great help. I also searched on Me109 wheels as a last resort and found this picture which finally shows the attachment:

http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/AWA2/1001-1100/walk1019-Bf-109-Large/08.shtm

As for the oleo scissors, I didn't know what you meant at first but yes, you are so right. There's nothing like a macro photo to show up your model's flaws! Oops

Sjumper the gear looks good ,needs finishing . Here is a page from this book ,I highly recommend it:

Here is the page:

This book is the last of perhaps 10 that I got for my build ,it answered all my remaining questions including where the brake line enters the wheel hub .I would place it above center of the axle .

And clean up those oleo scissors!

Thank you ,Krow113

Afternoon all, seasons greetings. Hope you're all keepin' warm (northern hemisphere!)...

Been experimenting with some guitar string and lead foil from a wine bottle to make some brake lines. Seen this done elsewhere so gave it a try. It came up OK but it's very difficult to align the attachments to the vertical as the string has very little flex in it. Also, I have managed to find NO reference pictures of the actual connection itself so is pretty much guesswork. Anyone got any pics they can share?

Well, I guess there is a Hasegawa 1/48 Stuka in the stash. An F-8 in winter camo sounds cool too.  Count me in on RDIV. Would have liked to seen Daywalker build that 219 though.Crying

Stumpjumper,  The defense bands went on last. Painting the white first then the blue. Just found a set of drawings that include the rivets for an Anton, looks like I'll be giving that rivet technique a try on an A-3.

Stukas? Great idea -- I have some Fujimi 72s and a reboxed Hasegawa 48. But there were other ground attack and antitank planes too -- Fw 190 F-8 (as we know), the Hs 129, and after the invasion Hitler (nearsightedly) ordered every new aircraft to be capable of carrying bombs -- does that mean anything post June '44 could be tacitly considered Sclachtflieger??? Interesting!

Another possibility could be Luftwaffe twin engine types -- of any and all respects -- for a future RD.

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Ah yes... I forgot about that!  How about the Schlachtflieger then?  A Stuka sounds like a fun build to me!

YES YES !! I am in for a Stuka build Yeah Been wanting to build another one for sometime now. I even have a 1/48 Revell on the shelf waiting. Gotta love those 50% off coupons ya know. Stick out tongue

Schlachtflieger? Is that ground attack? That sounds like a good idea. One question though - my technical knowledge is not great in this respect but weren't most fighters used in a ground support role at some time or another? Am sure you chaps will figure this out with only specific variants allowed ? Smile

Excellent work fellas, love those birds!

I was thinking of "Nightfighters" as the theme for RD IV.  I am really wanting to build either an He-219 or a -262B.  Whaddya think?

Mobious - this is a technique swap! The rivets were done by putting a sewing pin in a pin vice and using Tamiya masking tape as a guide. I just pressed each one individually and as you create the indent, the plastic around it expands slightly upwards which gives it the raised effect. I know it sounds insane but give it a go - you'll be surprised how quickly you can get some speed up and you can easily do a whole wing surface in a couple of hours. The biggest problem I had was finding the rivet patterns in the first place (check out the Photo Hobby Manual for the 190).

Thanks for the info on the pastels. So it's just a case of dry brushing on the pastel dust? I'll see if I can lay my hands on some ASAP!

Last question Mobious, the Defence of the Reich bands - did they go on last or did you put them on after the lichtblau, and then camo after that? It's my next step, y'see!

Vetteman, Thanks for comments and the tips. The A/B is working fine! It's a real treat not to have to fiddle with it constantly.

Spike, Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. Looking forward to RDIV too. I've a Revell 1/48 Me110 G-4 sitting in the stash collecting dust.

Stumpjumper, Thanks for the comments. The pastels can be applied over a laquer gloss coat either dry with a brush then burnished with a soft cloth/ cotton swab, or with water for panel lines. The nice thing is they clean up easy. I have a question for you, how did you do that amazing rivet detail?
