FW-190 Reich Defender III 5/10-2/11
Posted by Daywalker on Friday, April 16, 2010 5:52 PM

Welcome to the FW-190: Reich Defender III Group Build!

This group build will kick off officially on May 1st 2010, and run through January 31st 2011.  As always, if you need a little more time that can be easily accommodated.  All scales, production versions, and skill levels are welcome, the more the merrier!  Also, partially completed, stalled, and started projects welcomed!

All production variants from the A-1 through the TA-152 are welcome, no one-off prototypes or paper design studies.

All we ask is that you:

1. Post photos when you can, as we all like to see progress photos.

2. Have fun!

Pretty simple!  Below are two sizes of the GB badge, all I ask is that you host it yourself on Photobucket or a similar web hosting site.

Here are a few reference sites I have saved on my computer, hope they help!

Frank-any restrictions as to the various versions of FW-190? Early ones ok?

Thanks

Bob

edit-oops...never mind-found my answer over in the Aircraft forum.  Count me in....I promise I'll finish this one....or at least try...Embarrassed

Not sure what version I'll be building though-I have an 1/48 Eduard A5 in the stash, along with a 1/48 Hasegawa F8...not sure that I want to tackle the Eduard kit yet-very detailed but could be very time consuming.

Good question Bob!  I was thinking that this time around, we would allow all FW-190's as opposed to limiting the GB to later variants.  My thoughts were to include any FW-190 that saw operational service, and excluding only those which were paper projects or one-off prototypes.

Bugger, i so want to enter this, i have a 1/32nd 190 D-9, will be my first ever 1/32nd kit. But i am off to the Falklands at the start of May, and i won't get back to modelling until the end of August. I will have to see how my B-24 come on, if i can get that done by the end of Sept, i will be in, but it will be a tight push.

Great!  Glad to have you aboard fellas.

sk3tch- I can put all three down for you if you like.  Which versions are they?

Carlos- Glad to see you here! Welcome Sign

Bish- Sounds like you have a busy year this year!  Do be careful abroad.  If you would like (assuming you have time) please feel free to start it now, and I would be happy to allow a run-over if you need it.  I would really like to see your work here!

Heh Frank,

I really like your Group builds and will find a 'Butcher bird' to build for this one! It won't be a large scale and possibly a 1/72 scale one. I recently ordered from Squadron so if that goes well I will get them to mail out a FW-190. That being said which is a good 1:72 scale kit. Ill log in and see if Edward has one, never built or even owned one of their kits.Hmm

Thanks Frank. I can't start it now as i am home on leave until i go, and all my building is done in my room in barracks.  Maybe i can work on the two at the same time, the B-24 is for the KIMS GB and isn't due until the end of the year.  I will let you know for deffinate in Sept, but i will be looking in to see how it goes while i am away.

I really want to do this as well, it is the Hasa kit with the marking for Rudel's aircraft, and as i said, i have never done a 1/32nd before.

Well...Put me down the the 1/32 Hasegawa Fw190A.  I'm pretty sure it builds to an A8 although the box doesn't say so.

Also put me down the the Tamiya Fw190 F-8.  As much as I'd love to add the Eduard kit in this build...It's almost done...So I won't add it.

Well, you just had to go and do it didn't you Frank?  Knowing full well I have enough on my plate you spring this one on me!

Put me down for a 1/32 Hasegawa Fw 190A-8, will probably do a Sturmbock from JG 3.  Of course if the 1/32 A-3 from PCM is nice I may give that one a go.

I pledge to:

1.  Wait for the start date to start building this time.

2.  Complete the project!

Thanks for doing this one buddy, we're running out of fighters though, what will we possibly do for Reich Defender IV?

Well sense this morning I decided on up grading the scale to 1/48! Have just the bird in mind, found it in 'Canadian Aircraft of WWII by Carl Vincent' It is a post war FW-190 in ... Canadian colors! Still ok for the Reich Defender III?

Here is a picture I took of it in the book, text is more descriptive of what, why and how it came into Canadian hands.

Anyone know the exact model of 190 this is? All guns and bomb racks were removed or never installed before it can into Canadian ownership. Thoughts were it was a trainer aircraft abandoned in a field.

Summer is a slow building time for me due to increased flying and my garage is over 100 deg but I can't resist this one.  Mark me down for a 1/48th Fujimi A-7/R3 done in Heinz Bar's Red 23 (his back up plane).

Shoot...I got into Reich Defender II too late to build a 262...I'm hitting this one at the right time, though, so I figured I'd better stick my head in here to declare my desire to participate!

Not sure what I'd build yet - have to poke around the closet. Most likely a Hasegawa 1/72 D-9 with a pile of Verlinden resin and etch...although Tamiya, Promodeler, and Eduard 1/48 190's are all staring me in the face (and have been for a while!) as well. Hmmmm.

Anyone have any leftovers of a D9 sheet in 1/72 they'd be willing to donate/trade/s*ll in my general direction? Not particularly concerned with what the markings are - I just know that the Hasegawa ones are pretty old, and waaaaay too thick to produce decent results.

SF, judging by the lack of shell ejection ports, bulged canopy, and MG bulges on the deck in front of the cockpit, I'd go with an F8.

Karl,

Thanks buddy, just after posting the question the answer appeared in the text from the book! Indeed it is a F-8 and I just ordered the Edward kit. I hear good things about their products and sure I won't be disappointed!

Thanks again for your reply, It seems you know your FW-190's. Anyhow I will have the German decals unused as the plan is to build the Canadianized post war version.

Hello Daywalker

I'd like to join and do a 1/48 Accurate Miniatures FW 190A-8. I have had it sitting around for months along with a couple PE kits for it, and this may be what I need to actually get started on it.

Frank -- I am so aboard! My Dragon 1:48 Wurgers haven't arrived from the US yet, and I just scored a Hasegawa A-8 on eBay which will take time to wend its way here. I don't have storage space to do a big 1:32 at this time, though I have two that would be perfect, including a Bodenplatte participant... I might have to launch into the GB with a Dragon 1:72 Ta-152 and just see where I go from there!

Further to Lufty's point above, for RD IV may I suggest a combined build for the "exotics" that actually reached service in the desperate last six to twelve months of the war in a defensive role -- the Do 335, the Me 163, the He 162, that sort of thing? I'm really hangin' to cycle back to the 109, too!

Cheers, Mike/TB379
