60th Anniversary Korean War Group Build- extended for the duration

The front canopy is not all that bad , it's the fuselage windows I stuffed up , so a simple swap with the other H03S-1 kit fuselage halves should remedy the problem . I'll brake out the razor saw and sanding sticks and start work on the replacement halves , only a slight set-back ...

Work kept me busy the past week but I finally got a little work done. Hopefully I'll get a lot more done over the next few days.

Man! John, you are a machine!  Looking good!  Sorry about the setbacks with the chopper though.  I haven't built a Mustang since I was a kid, but the looks of the Academy kit is tempting me.

I was looking for a more interesting load, maybe some bombs on the inboard pylons but after some research it appears 6 rockets was the load of choice for the Panthers. They could theoretically carry more but the -2 just didn't have the power to operationally carry a full load. I even have a set of Tiny Tim 11.75" rockets I had considered but it appears the F-84 was the only jet that carried them.

I'll be sticking with the included rockets, so what would be the appropriate colors for 5" rockets? All I've been able to find are B&W photos. 

 I am under the impression that the Tiny Tim was only a USN/USMC air to ground weapon. I have only seen pics of them on prop jobs F4Us and ADs. They would look neat on a Panther I bet. The 5" HVARs should be aluminum with OD warheads. No red to be seen on them. Some fuel tanks on the inboard pylons as either fuel or loaded with Napalm might look good too for a CAS mission. The only difference is when filled with Napalm, the fuel tank would have a fuse screwed in where the filler cap is normally seen. In 1/72 a sort piece of styrene rod would do the job. 

Some great looking work going on here already!  My M-26 Pershing arrived in the mail today, and I am looking forward to starting it this weekend.

A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!  Another armor!!!   I have commited but I can not start until I finish my build for another GB.  Can't wait to start my M24 Chaffee later this summer!  Well, somebody has to build that little tank because those were first to arrive Korea from Japan when the war broke. 

The Tiny Tim was primarily a USN / USMC weapon, but apparently was also used on the F-84. The set I have has a blunt point for use on the F-84 and a more pointed nose for naval use.

I can't find any reference to it being used on any USN / USMC jets, just the F4U, F6F and AD-1.

I do have some tanks I saved to do as napalm, I understand the tanks were painted yellow when used for napalm.

from what i have seen, I dont think there was a hard fast rule about painting tanks for napalm use yellow. many photos show them in their original nmf or sea blue finish

I looked through my couple books on th eAir War in Korea and didn't see any pics of any aircraft carrying the Tiny Tim. I know they were used though. Wiki said the Corsair, Avenger, Helldiver and I believe the Hellcat were all carriers in WWII. Another site showed an F-84 with a couple, so thourough research will pay off here. As far as the color of the napalm tanks, again inconclusive. There are a couple pics and a profile showing yellow ones, but they were on USAF planes and the napalm tanks lined up in front of and hung on USN/USMC planes seemed to be in the sea blue and some with painted noses back about 18-24" in yellow. Again thourough research is the key. HTH somewhat!!

Hey Stik: I just picked up a Sioux! Please add that to my build list! It will be the Italeri 1/72 scale kit. That makes 3 for me! I hope I can get them all done by the end of this build! Thank goodness this is for 1 year. I have another GB that is almost finished....and do to space for building I have to focus on 1 at a time.

Has anyone ever heard of a model kit company called Aerodrom , from Poland ???

They apparently produce three 1/72 scale S-51 helicopter kits ; There's a British Westland Dragonfly , A Sikorskt H-5G with strecher pods and a Sikorsky H03S-1 Navy bird with additional fuel tanks .

I have one of the Aerodrom kits, the third one down. It looks decent, kind of like a Matchbox or Airfix kit. The canopy is unusual, it has 4 fuselage halves, 2 clear and 2 solid, you are supposed to cut the canopy off of the clear fuselage put it on the solid fuselage. I don't know where to get another one, I haven't been able to find any information that the company is still in business.

I guess I'm in a bit of a unique situation as I'm a full time carer for my elderly parents and I'm home 24/7 . Most of my building I do between 5.30am -7.30 am and from 7.30pm each night . Most of the day is taken up in the carer roll , mum has parkinsons and my farther suffers from cronic pain from shingles , he's had for the past ten years . Sometimes I can sneek in half an hour here and there during the day but there is always lot's of housework to do , washing , meals , lot's of different medication , sanitary issue's and the like ; Doctors appointments and prescriptions to organize , however all in all I still have a lot more time at the workbench than a lot of you guy's so I don't take my modeling time for granted .

Lot's of times I've been at the bench and looked up at the clock and it's 9.00pm and next time I look it's almost midnight , where did the time go ?

I was seaching around the net for AM or resin parts for the S-51 , I thought someone might have made stretcher pods as an accessory when I found that web site listing the Aerodrome kits , pitty their not available an Army H-5G version would have gone nicely with the Navy H03S-1

Anyway back to the bench or bed ???

OK, youa re all updated now.. Along with as many of Helo's that I could find out of all those posts... I dont know if it's my modelers ADD that keeps me from knuckling down and finishing a kit or what. I have had plenty of time these past couple weeks and just not much interest in building save for a few sessions.

I added some more weight to the insides of the engine nacelles and the A-26B Invader sits nicely on her landing gear , the invader is ready for some putty along with two P-51's and two jeeps are ready for assembly after airbrushing olive drab to all the parts seperatly

I glued the windows into the second [replacement] H03S-1 fuselage halves , however I continued wet sanding the first H03S-1 windows and I think I may have gotten rid of all the superglue that fogged the windows , so I can still use the original fuselage halves . Seeing I started the second H03S-1, I was thinking of building her as a USMC bird , I found this pic on the net...

I can borrow some MARINES lettering from my Italeri H-19 kit stash , but I can't quite make out what other lettering/numbers are on the USMC helicopter in the pic above ???

Horay! I got the scanner to work.  A couple of these are for John.  I hope they help.  The other, I just included because I want to buy and build the RoG Privateer in this scheme.  One roadblock, called the "wife".

Since I haven't been able to paint lately.  It has been way too hot and humid here.  I am kind of stuck on my builds I was trying to finish up on before starting the Corsair.  So, I want to start it tomorrow.  With any luck, I will make photographable progress.

The large white side code is apparently "WM - 16".  Another pic I've seen with this "WM" code carries the squadron designator "MAMRON - 33".   (Marine Aircraft Maintenance Squadron ?), or it could possibly be "H&MS - 33", depending on the time period.  This appears in smaller letters under the word "MARINES", not distinct enough to really tell.  Standard markings would include the model and Bureau Number block in smaller numbers (3 inch / 6 inch, I think), farther aft on the boom, but it's not visible at all in this shot.  Some HO3S choppers also carried the message "ABANDON CHUTE" on both sides of the belly below the door, facing outward.  Again, that's not visible here.

Ok, it is starting to look like a plane. I'm a little surprised to see what a compact plane the Panther is. No major issues, the wings were a bit fiddly to get lined up but not too bad.

Greg , thanks for posting the pic's , they will help a lot ; The privateer sounds like a great build too .

Rlawson , thanks also for the info on the markings for the USMC HRS-1 , I have some decal sheets with white letters and numbers , so hopfully I can put together what I need.

Italeri 1/72 P-51D [ yep another mustang] 12th FB/18th Sqn Korea , with underwing rockets

Airfix Hawker Sea Fury FB II , Its a basic kit but has underwing rockets and a nice decal sheet...

I saved the best for last , I couldn't believe my luck at the book store , they had this 2nd hand book for ten bucks

Aaron the Panther is looking great!!! Saw the new Revell release of the old Matchbox at the LHS and could not believe they had nearly 30 or 40 bucks on it!!! I was like , you can't be serious, for an old Matchbox in a new box!!!
