The flatcar is done!

After my post last night, I started on some of the last details (like the extra trash, and tie-down straps) and I finished the last-seccond little things today.

Here they are:

Here's the beginning of the tie-downs (simple sewing elastic that I got for a dollar or two from Wal-Mart) I super-glued them into the pockets, and let that dry.

After the tie-downs were completed (about this point I started to panic, because I super-glued my tweezers to one of the straps a minute before this photo)

Some trash on the "B" end (closest to the hand-brake) The box is an "N" scale washing machine box that I got off-line, and glued together [What's in the box? I don't know, but it's heavy enough to keep it there for the trip so farSmile]

Everything (except for the box, which is glued down with regular white glue) is super-glued to the deck, so it ain't goin no where.

Some scrap wood on the "A" end, mabe some extra load cribbing left over from the last customer's load

After the straps got dyed with some black paint.

The box got the same paint treatment [It sure looks like it's been left on the streets for a while]

Well, that's it for this weekend. It's been a fun one, that's for sure.

Tony:  Awesome work.  I can't believe how good that simple little kit looks!  Three out of the 4 finished works so far are automobiles.  The car guys are pulling ahead! Cool

Don:  The only people who fail in this GB are those that quit.  Of course we want to see you continue and finish it.  Keep the pics coming.

Got a busy morning and likely won't get back to the bench until after lunch but I'm almost there so shouldn't be a problem.  Good luck everyone and keep at it.

Tony, that little Williams looks great.  I have several Heller 1/43 kits in the stash but have yet to build them.

Suppression Fire, I thought we were going to have to take points off your modelling man card for submitting a 1/144 tank.  You've surprised me, keep up the good work.  Same goes to all of you out there still banging away at it.

Here's where I'm at with about 14 hours to go.

Fixing to wipe her down with some alcohol to remove the sanding dust and then hit her with some primer.  Then I'll lay down a smooth coat of gloss black, mask the canopy and follow with some Tamiya Bare Metal Silver (never tried it before).  Paint should be done before I leave for work, then all I have to do is apply the decals when I get home.

Hey Don, err sorry Mr. Squid dont fret it, some people in last years build had issues and ended up being a bit late, at least you tried an I hope had fun, I did while I was building, I even got to try a new technique I read about in FSM. Its amazing I was so wound up before earlier But I've sat down and had a couple of hours bench time and I'm almost feeling great (had some Heavy Metal going through the head phones as well that helped LOL)

Jason nice looking little beast.

Per the guidelines I'm posting what happened as of my own deadline.

That's a skin coat of Miliput applied yesterday evening, early yesterday evening. Gave it over seven hours under lamps and it never cured? I walked away at that point. But after some rest I scraped it all off and then used resin as a skin coat and that's what I'm picking back up now. So I've officially FAILED but asked the "host" by message if I might still post for today at least? If anyone else has any objections to that just let me know and I certainly understand!

Thanks and good luck with all the great builds to all!

Here I am at 37 hours and 36 minutes into the build.

most of it is assembled, and I have given it a filter wash. So now it shall sit overnight and dry.

Just a couple more finishing touches to put to it in the morning (That's why I waited until 9:30 am to start the build).

Should be able to scrape in by the deadline (If I get out out of bed early enough/ If the kids don't play up too much in the morning).

Andrew: Bummer you missed the deadline, thought you might have gone to watch the V8's

Everybody that has finished: Excellent work.

Everybody that hasn't yet finished: looking forward to seeing your works.

Nice build Tony.  And being a Mansell fan, makes it even that much nicer!

Fullscalemodeler-thanks for the tip on the blanket.  I've bookmarked it and will give it a try next time around.  Sounds almost like making a very thick decal....that and a little Solvaset might be the way to go.

Tony, congrats on being the first one over the line.

As for me, I wasn't able to get any build time today (or last night from about 4pm onwards for that matter), dont life suck at times (the life and family issues from friday just didnt want to lay down).

So my standing? The B-52 had a final round of putty and then paints, the little egg plane got the fuselage together. I'm going to try and find time over the next few days to finish both even though I've missed the deadline by 12 hours already if I dont finish them now I dont know when I will.

Well, it's in the cabinet precisely 37 hours and 17 minutes after I commenced. A couple of comments about this GB, it's been great fun, I've built a model that I've would never have gotten around to as a normal 'serious' build, I've taught myself a few things in order to get it done quicker. For example, I've always used a 48 hour rule before masking any paint, however, today I've masked after 3 hours and got away with it. It's also been a terrific challenge.

My great thanks to Dave for putting this on.

Cheers

Tony

Roh, Roh!

Has anyone ever had Miliput NOT cure? I knew it was being  slow but after seven hours under a lamp I've now decided it isn't gonna cure at all? Major issue for me since one of the Ma.K. hallmarks is the use of flowing, organic shapes. Lot's of blending! I just carefully scraped it all off?

No way will I make the deadline, if I ever really would have- BUT, I'm gonna plug away.Stick out tongue

Excellent work everyone! Bow Down

Its amazing how well a model can turn out when a deadline is fast approaching, this has really helped my affliction for taking way too long to complete a kit.

Last set of WIP's before the finish line, great GB and thanks to our great host!Toast

Here is the turret before paint. Bottom plate is paper, no need to paint...

The main hull & turret before paint.

Decided to pre shade with a wash of enamel flat black, didn't allow enough drying time before the top coats and had issue with thinner inside the PE air cleaner box effecting the paint. Oh well live & learn!

11 hours before I finish this one, see you all there!

This will hopefully be my last status update before I post the finished shots.

Clear coat is on now, soon I'll brush paint a few details then put this thing together.

Nice work Aaron.

I've got the decals onto my Williams. Next thing will be a clear coat, paint the suspension, then final assembly. At this stage I've got just over 15 hours to my deadline, looks like I'll even get a night's sleep.

Cheers

I got some more done, I'm glad I picked something simple since I haven't had as much time at the bench as I had hoped. I should still have plenty of time regardless though, this is actually proving to be a fairly nice kit with more detail and better fit that I expected.

Another quick update.  24 1/2 hrs in and all the major assembly and paint is on.  Just the tracks, the MG and a few other bits and detail painting.  Then decals and weathering.  I have a busy day tomorrow but should have enough time to finish it.

Front page is being updated with pictures of finished builds in case anyone is getting dizzy trying to keep track.

Tadaaaaa!

Done the decals, little bits and bobs, antenna wire and added some exhaust staining. This Mig is ready to roll[:0]

It is now sunday morning after starting my build on friday evening. That leaves me with ten or so hours left. That in turn makes me wonder if a full model is possible in 24 hours....Eats.

Actually this mig was the most detailed i have done out of all the brands. The tamyia would have been easier to do (not to mention the monogram one). The trumpeter kit however (and with enough time) would be my choice in retrospect if i wanted to do it again.

Thanks for watching everybody! This GB has been most enjoyable and i will certainly put in considerable effort to be able to have my bench cleared and ready for the next editionYes

I'm taking a break, for dinner, and evening family duties.

Will be back in a few hours, looking at another late one tonight, The last big push. that will leave just a few hours tomorrow morning for finishing touches.

no photo currently, everything is disassembled and spread all over the workbench getting detail painted.

I've given up on the launch platform.  For whatever reason, I can't find the right mix for the yellow.  With a little less than 24 hours to go, I'm concentrating on the X-13 itself.  I've left out the cockpit for two reasons, the first is that means 3 less ill fitting pieces that I've got to deal with; the second is that the canopy is so cloudy you wouldn't see anything anyways.  Here's where I am right now.

Gee, the updates are coming thick and fast.

Thought I should post a pic of the current status. Most of the work to be done is on the body and then the final assembly.

Okay, final assembly of the big parts is done ( only 2 landing gear assemblies left to add on after they're painted ).  Waiting for the cement to dry, so finally have time for the pics.

The sprue lineup:

After 2 hours, I had the wings together, canopy in place, and the landing gear and cockpit primered.

Obviously, the pic of the gear above was before I added primer.  Since I was giving time for the primer to dry while I was getting some sleep in, I waited to get the pics of the landing gear and cockpit when I got back up.  Here's the damage to the nose gear I mentioned in the previous posts.

And here's the cockpit/nose gear subassembly repaired and with the basic paint job done.  The blob on the back is 5 steel pellets for balance secured with 2-part putty.  Sorry it's so blurry.  I didn't realize this was out of focus til after the subassembly was already secured to the interior.

Since the intakes would be almost impossible to paint after being installed, I painted the inner surfaces before assembly.  These will be masked with silly putty when I spray the primer.  The liquid mask for the canopy is also drying here.  The odd patch next to the canopy is where I smoothed out a fingerprint left by cement when I was installing the clear canopy.  I got lucky in that the imprint wasn't worse and the cement didn't fog the clear plastic.

And finally, top and bottom views of the final assembly of the main body.  The remaining landing gear will be installed as the last step after painting, decals, etc. to make for easier painting and application of sludge wash for the details.  I also modified the bomb bay doors to be closed to save time and because I figured I'd wait until I was building a larger-scale kit to worry about making things more interesting with such details.

I hope I won't be judged too harshly for skipping the puttying this time around, but given the GB's time limit and the emphasis on getting things done, I'm going with the compromise of a B-2 with paint and decals done but glaring seamson the engines and wings.  If we do this again next year I'll know to plan on having some as-yet-undiscovered quick-dry putty and/or have a Hasegawa kit handy that will have fewer fit issues.

Like what i am seeing sofar. Lots of good quality lightning fast stuff going on everybody!Wink

Razordws,

Just shot a pic of the boxart for you. It's trumpy's 1/48 scale Mig:

Well,... for some reason i woke up ridiculously early today so after a cup of coffee i continued work. All painting is done and the landing gear assembly is drying for a bit before i will start on the decals. Looks like i will be done well before the deadline. Wished i could have done a better job at getting rid of the seams but oh well.... NMF turned out ok though. The revell paint has a gritty look to it that is in no way comparable to alclad or talon paint but it is darn easy to work with and fast drying too.

Keep going everybody! This is fun fun fun!Big Smile

That KV up there is looking fantastic, isn't it ?

My Williams is coming along. The chassis is done. Wheels/tyres are done, axles are done. Steering Wheel is done.

The front and rear wing assemblies are done, just the end plates to go. They're painted and drying now.

Had a problem with the body, I had a big run of yellow paint under the masking. Usually I would clean it back once it had dried and re-spray.

Due to time constraints, I scraped it off wet to quicken the drying time.

Once dry, I've sanded it back, re-masked and sprayed again. Puts it under a bit of pressure though.

More and photos later.

Cheers

Tony

Well at the end of my 24 hour mark I had the beast coated in XtraColour Soviet Tank Green...

and a close up of the turret texturing under a layer of paint... I am very happy with the results

G'day Mate, cool rod!! I've done a few grafix/effects on bikes(fullsize) using a process called Acrylistration.(Not sure on exact spelling). Basically, print what you want onto selected paper, photo paper comes up glossy, normal paper comes up matt, then spray several coats of acrylic clear coat, up to 10 for larger, 15 x 15cm & bigger, prints to make them more robust, but smaller pieces, or maybe people who are a bit more patient & gentle than me, can use less coats.

Leave to cure untill cured well enough to handle, anywhere from hours, to a day for thicker coats, then soak in water and GENTLY rub the paper from the back, untill you are left with just clear & ink.

To apply, simply spray the back of it and where it will sit with clear, press it on expelling all (if any) air, and then overcoat with clear to ensure solvent "regooeys" the whole thing. Bigger decals can come out reasonably thick, but as the print is at the back, you can sand it back almost to nothing. Gloss level will depend on paint used & final polishing.

Thinner pieces can be formed around parts while in the "gooey" stage of application.

Due to the thickness and poor attribites of acrylic, it hates UV, so after 5 or more years in the sun it will craze a bit, but I'd doubt that many of your models will spend everyday out in the carpark!

I've used it for difficult to reproduce effects, and as a cheaper alternative to buying different body art. Hope this helps. Sean.
