Fantastic squigles and mottle!  You guys are awesome.

I managed to clear the P-70, decal it (they suck), and started the weathering.  This will be first attempt at the south pacific, beat to crap look.  I will try and post photos later.  My camera just doesn't capture it well.  In person you can see the subtle difference with the pre-shading etc.

Last weekend I had my own "weekend madness" build.  My son needed to make a Fiesta (Fiesta is a big to-do here, parades, carnival lots of drunks etc) shoebox float for his 4th grade class.  It had to be about a famous Texan.  He picked Claire Chennault.  I didn't even know he was from Texas.  So we made a nice little float in Chennault's honor.  I happend to have Academy's 72nd P-40B in AVG markings.  It is a little turd of a kit, but we knocked it out in a day and a half.  We mounted it on the little plastic stand that comes with the Tamiya f-51d on top of the box.  I'll take a picture of it too.  He got an "A".  Building models finally pays off!  Sadly, I think it is the first build I've finished this year!

Greg, Fiesta for us non drinking partying people is a reason to stay away from downtown.  Except for the IPMS meeting, I rarely venture south of the airport.  Gary's and Hobbytown are both above 410.  Are you going to Dallas on the 20th of May for Scalefest/Squadron open house?

I'm interrupting for a question folks - has anyone in here tried dot-filtering on an all-black aircraft? I''ve got a P-38 nightfighter tha should soon be getting time under the airbrush & I'm looking to break up the all-black finish a little. Just wanted to have a look at somebody else's work first!

hey Vance, I haven;t seen one done that way,,but as an FYI,, all the -M's were deployed in Japan right after the war ( IIRC ), and saw little use for long, so they should not have been to heavily weathered.

but, to help your question, I think more dark purples, deep reds, might work over the black to offset it ??...

I haven't...but one thing I learned with the Mossie is that black aircraft are like black cars. While you might think the black would overpower washes and filters and such, actually, EVERYTHING shows up. So...go easy I guess...

yep - I remember washing dad's black truck every other weekend when I was still at home. That thing showed EVERYTHING. I think I'll be sticking to middle-tones of red-green-blue-brown. Whites & yellows are going to show through too much.

maybe some deep/dark pulples Vance? ever seen a Crow or blackbird upclose? they have some deep purple in them.. ( Smoke on the HO... fire in the sky )..

Good call on the purples - I had done a NF Hurricane several years ago & went with a half&half of Tamiya black + Midnight blue(?), turned out too blue to my eye though. But blues & purples as a filter could shift it just enough.

Hmm... I might try some dot filters too.  I've never done it, and not on a black a/c either.

Satch, I am scheduled to be on shift.  I am trying to get someone to cover me, so I can go.  I've never been. Are you going?  Have you been before?   I too try to never venture inside 410 unless work takes me there.  I worked o/t at the Flambeau parade and I was amazed at how much they trashed the city!  Garbage cans everywhere with sanitation workers emptying them out, yet people just dumped stuff where they sat.  Never in my life have I seen people litter so much!  I had fun, but only because I enjoy my job.

Looking at my pictures, I see I need to blend the fading better.  I just started weathering, so hopefully more washes etc. will help.

Greg, I bid off that weekend so I plan on going.  Are you bringing your boy?  My 15 year old expressed an interest the other day but I'm sure that will change as the day comes closer.

Hi Vance, I recently completed a 1/48 SR-71 for my Stealth GB

This is the bird after the flat coat;

Then I applied light to dark blues, some yellow, white and grey dots. I also used some red and brown near the exhausts. I think the results turned out ok.

The P-38 might not have as much stress as an SR-71 but a bit of refinement may help break up the overall black.

oops, forgot to reply to this part! Yes, they didn't actually see anything more than "occupation patrols" if I recall, so I'm not going for the heavy weathering look anyway. I'm thinking the dot-filters may be a little more subtle.

Casper - thanks for the pic of your Blackbird. Just enough variance to show some wear & break up the black, that's what I'm going for alright.

I've made some good progress with the decals and sealed them down with a coat of dullcoat,next will be a lot of weathering to bring this thing to life

Trey, Casper, your builds are coming along nicely.

Got the decals on, used AM set for everything but the unit badge as the Dragon decals were in very poor shape.

The homemade canopy turned out okay I think though I need to clean it up some.

Thanks Dave, The decals look like they laid down nicely and the canopy looks awesome. The 1/48 scale was a major pita ca'nt imagine doing that in 1/72 nicely done. The clean up should be a breeze ,I do'nty see anything that really stands out .

O.k guys you are making me feel like a slacker, so I did some work last night. The pictures suck becasue they are from my phone, but I feel bad about not updating my build, and I did not want to break out the DSLR, tripod etc. Anyway on to the pictures.
