The base coat is on... I lightened with 10% neutral grey for scale effect but It is still incredibly ... well blue.

VMF 542 (N) started combat operations in October of 1944 so I figure that by April of 1945 the aircraft would show some sign of operating out of forward operating bases (Ulithi then Okinawa). I want the weathering to be subtle but show the strain of forward ops. One thing to note is the pre-shading was a complete waste of time. I'm going to start fading the color back later tonight (depending on scotch consumption) or tomorrow morning... more later.

Tried a different lighting setup, hopefully this makes them a bit brighter. The lights make the rusting look a ton more aggressive than it is, the flat coat and pastels etc will help tone everything down. I also have a lot of touchup to do on the wheels and still more rusting to do (some areas will be covered by the tracks etc.) AND i added a bucket!  Enjoy!

Terry - that's are really cool technique - thank you for posting!

jbrady - your Hellcat looks good!  I know what you mean abou the blue being really dark!  I'm still working up the guts to start spraying some really lightened shades of the sea blue and intermediate blue on my Hellcat!

Tiger - I really like your Stug - your weathering looks great and the bucket is something you see in a lot of photos so it's a perfect addition!

sanderson_91: Be careful when lightening the dark sea blue. I had to go over the upper surface with the straight color after I started fading it back. It's really dark but a little lightner goes a long way with it. I'll post pictures when the paint has time to cure a bit. It is a gloss enamel so I'm going to have to wait a few days before I can work with it again.

Looking good everybody!

I've decided not to preshade the 109...I tend to prefer post-shading, since it gets the markings, too. Also got the white of the fuselage band painted last night. Also have a quandary I'm hoping you guys can help me out with...

Hard mask or soft mask? I've Luftwaffe desert schemes represented in both, and the Eduard instructions seem to indicate a hard line...

Also pigmented the Sherman last night...think I might have overdone it a bit...will have to mess with it more tonight.

Doogs: Didn't the Luftwaffe use mats, even in the field, for camo colors?

Here's the first fading coat. I'll wait until the decals are on before I tie it all together

And yeah the paint is still wet in places. Here's an interesting painting I've found of "Black Death"

Doogs, love that scheme, one of the nicest for the 109 IMO...

I did the same scheme about 6 years ago and i didn't trust my freehand ability back then so i used the paper mask technique for the RLM80 over a freehand RLM79, i think it came out ok but if i were to do it again i'd definatly go freehand....

And the 109 FINALLY has paint on it!

So far this is the RLM 78 and lightened RLM 78...I'll be spraying the blending coats tonight. If the color looks a bit funky toward the wingtips and whatnot, that's the iPhone acting stupid.

Also found a pic of the plane I'm doing in my Aero Detail book...looks like the RLM 78/79 division is a hard line, after all.

And finally, here's the pigmented Sherman. Still not sure what I think about it.

I can take a picture tonight if you like, but it's just two PVC t-joints. I've got a strip of masking tape across the top of each to provide a smidge of padding, but other than that they were just scrap I had laying around that did the job.

I tend to like them better than other methods. Since they're round, they don't make much contact with the wings, but they're long enough to usually provide a stable platform (especially on a "flaps down" kit).

Doogs, are those vinyl tracks on the Sherman?

The tank is looking awesome, a fine looking example of weathering!

Thanks! Yeah they're the kit tracks. Don't know if they're vinyl anymore...these called for styrene glue to join the ends, versus the old "heat a screwdriver" method I remember from my childhood. But they are rubber band tracks nonetheless. Don't really mind on these, since Sherman tracks didn't sag.

And...I'm calling the Sherman done! First armor build in close to two decades. Still have a lot to learn, but I'm pretty happy with the way it came out.

That's some serious good work Doogs! Love the overall effect of the various weathering techniques. Hard to believe you've been away from armor that long. Yes

In addition to the Sherman, I also finished off the RLM 78 on the 109 last night. Had to pull off the pitot tube (guess where the black cross goes?) and accidentally broke off one of the danglyboppers (technical term) under the ailerons.

Looking forward to busting out the RLM 79 tonight, but it may be a day or two before I get around to the mottling. Supposed to be cold and wet tomorrow...

Very nice work one and all here Toast Doogs I can only hope my first armor build comes out half as well as your Sherman has.

I have been lurking here from the start and have come to the conclusion that I am too timid with my weathering, gotta be a bit more heavy handed with it I think. Anyway this is a great group and I have learned a bunch just by lurking here. GREAT IDEA DoogsATX !!!!!!!!!!!

Depends on what you're weathering. The F6F I'm doing now is only mildly weathered. The next two will be beat to crap. It all depends on the context. I don't know anything about armor (except it's too heavy to fly) but I bet you can't go over the top with weathering. With aircraft I look at the theater, time in service, and hopefully pics of the actual bird.

Well, it was sorta kinda semi-technical term, maybe ...

So far the Eduard decals are perfect... very easy to work with. Even the one I put on upside down and didn't notice for almost ten minutes. I just soaked it and it came right up and went back down with no problem. Notice I didn't bother with breaking off little fiddly things, I broke off the whole rudder.

Now on to the stencils

Man, you guys are just cruisin' right along now! Great work Doogs & jbrady!! I really need to find some bench time (it's been almost a week and I'm going nuts - can't wait to get some paint, any paint, on the Pfalz - hoping for Thursday, my day off).

ruddratt- I feel your pain about bench time. January was crazy around this house. Often had to choose between bench time or computer time. Opted for bench time. Even that was at a premium.

I have been able to keep track of the goings on here. Man, you guys have been busy! Great work everyoneToast.

Since the Lightning I'm doing for this build is a cross over from that GB, I'm going to post most of the construction pics over there and concentrate the weathering pics here. I'll probably go with Oriole , the kit decals, although I'm still thinking of doing Miss Virgina. Something about the plane that shot down Yamamoto intrigues me. Either way ,the birds were flying out of Guadalcanal and showed the effects of South Pacific sun, rain, mud. Going to try and replicate the weathering along the panel lines of those aircraft.

First couple pics , the pastels I'm trying for the first time ever and a practice sheet with some Model Makerz pigments.

I tried a wash with some desert sand pigment mixed in to create an aged look on my Lib. Brushed on the wash ,then worked it in with a short bristled makeup brush using a stippling motion , removing most of the wash to leave just enough for a bit of fade . England based bombers didn't seem to fade a whole lot so I went with subtlety. The pics don't really show it to full effect.

Here's a few of the initial wash and dusting of the main gear bays . I used the large soft brush to soak up and work in the wash, then dusted with pigments.

A couple of the cockpit. Worked in some rubble dust and dessert sand on the sills , seat and floor. Henderson field could be pretty muddy and it makes sense it would get tracked into the cockpit to some extent.
