Hi Doogs:

Here's a 'reefer' ... the kit is an old, blue box Athearn model ... when I build them, I weight them properly (so they ride the rails smoothly), add metal wheelsets and kadee knuckle couplers ...

As we go along, I'll send progress photos of everything I'm doing, but will be starting with HO scale railroad items at first ...

The model railroad hobby has tons of stuff that are good 'crossovers' for aircraft and armor (ships too !) and I hope to share with the group some of those items ...

I was about to post a reply about your Reefer kit, Pepper. Exelent work all around.

It makes me miss the Athearn blue-box kits even more when I see what others have been able to do with them.

Thank you for the compliment ... I did a 'Project Reefer' about a month ago - set up an assembly line with everything I needed to add or change out and cranked out 30 of them in one fell swoop ... I've just now started to weather them and this GB is going to be an excellent format to share and learn from ... I also did two dozen 40' boxcars, all ATSF and all with the route map on the one side with the streamliner name on the other ... I'm tossing them into the mix as I start on the reefers ...

Some are older, such as the one I pictured, but most are of the 50's - 60's era ... all 40 footers and  the majority of them are Santa Fe ... I do have one stark white reefer just to entice comments from the peanut gallery when I run the reefer train at my club layout ...

Ah, Athearn blue box kits - I probably have 200 of them stored in a big cabinet in the garage, along with a goodly number of Roundhouse, Proto2000, Railbox, Accurail,  etc., etc. ... I do like the old blue box kits especially well as they were inexpensive to purchase back in the day ... now that Athearn no longer offers them, they've become rather pricey ...

And so it goes ... a pleasant change from shiny things like F-86's ...

Sign me up if i may, i could use all the help I can get!

I will be doing a Tamiya 1/35 Willy's MB recon version that has spent more time in the field than in the repair bay. I have already started this kit as a build but since i have 2 other kits to work on i am a ways off as it were.

If its too far along i totally understand but heres a pic of the frame so far:

the wheels/frame are only mocked atm, all the bits on the body are attached (seats, windshield/dash/hood are NOT attached) but as you can see there is tons more to do =D

 Yep my Bf-109 kit looks just as nice! I am also impressed by the level of cripsy details and apart from the diorama extras will be building this one OOB.

The rust/corrosion I got by mixing in more umber than I would normally use. I use a mix of lamp black 70%/umber 30% oils with thinner for a 'sloppy' wash that gets into all the nooks and crannies but this time reversed to 30/70. I am really happy with the look of it. I also managed to find Australia's version of "Future" it is called "Pledge One Go" I have since put a drop on each of those pit dials and they now have a slightly shiny look, pics later.

BTW is your Bf-109 engine going to be on show?

As I said before the level of detail in a 1/48 pit is breathtaking!!

As mentioned before I have now found Australia's equivalent of "Future" called "Pledge One Go" however I will refer to this as "Future" from now on. So I put a drop of Future on each instrument dial and put the fuselage and cockpit together.

I also had a look at the engine. Really nice details on this as well, went with more black in the wash this time.

Anyway better get back to the Meteor for the No AM GB! Wait until Feb now for any Zero work.

TBH its a lot simpler than it seems. I basically thought of how rust looks irl and mimicked it as best i could, it was a mixture of citadel bestial brown, pueblo red from Accent country colors (this is a touch thick so it leaves little flecks of paint, then a wash of the mixture with some black/green mixed in. then another coat of straight brown and finally a coat of the mixture but not as thorough.

Hmm guess it seems simpler when i do it..lol

redraider - you're P-40's on the list! Is that the "South Pacific Aces" one with Stardust and Texas Longhorn among the markings? Got one of those in my stash as well...looks like a fantastic kit!

No, it's the 2005 release and includes markings for a Flying Tiger and "Bob's Robin" and I'll be doing the latter.  The kits looks great but Hasegawa's use of various fuselage plugs and inserts makes it look like I may be in a for a bit of a challenge but overall I think I'm gonna enjoy it....the P-40 is my favorite fighter

Tiger and red, you're builds have both been updated on the roster!

With the diversity of subjects and environments, we're going to have some pretty great stuff in here, I think!

Ok small update, i began detailing and weathering the browning and the seats:

EDIT: Started on my windshield assembly well at least the glass part...lol Not 100% if i like it but its easy to remove if i don't :)

TONS more to do, including cleanup of the glass, overall painting detailing etc, not even close to finished - and we have not really begun..lol

Some mighty fine work on display here so far (does that mean we've started? ). Doogs, I thought I'd burned myself out on building 109's, but that E-7 kit looks awesome! - may have to grab me one of those! Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Also, if it's OK, I'd like to change my current entry and add a few others as well. Instead of the SE.5,  I'd like to build the Wingnut Wings 1/32 Pfalz D.IIIa instead, but also add a 1/72 Tamiya P-47 Razorback and a 1/48 Italeri TBF/TBM Avenger (a rebox of the excellent AM kit) to my list of entries as well.

This is a great idea for a GB. Just about everyone who posts here has to have something in their stash that applies - I can only see this entry list getting bigger!

 I would also like to add to mine, I have a 1/35 Tamiya Panzer Kampfwagen Ausf.J on the sidelines while waiting for some parts. Since I am moving along with this Jeep i figure i better add something else..lol  It too is somewhat completed but is still a long ways off from being done so I hope it can qualify =D

Can you put me down for a 1/48 Tamiya M4 Sherman Early Production ? It will be my very first armor build, hope I can do it justice. I will more then likely start it in the last summer early fall.

Dave - LOVE the Browning! I've got one going on my Sherman WIP that I hope I can pull out as well as yours!

I also had an idea the other day about weathering windshields...using a circle cutter to cut out a circle along the wiper radius and using it as a mask where the wiper would pass.

Thanks for the compliment, its really not that complicated of a finish gunmetal base on the gun and a silver dry brush and black/brown wash.  Same rust mixture i used for the exhaust as a base for the mount and post then a light coating of flat green and OD =)

I have no doubt yours will come out awesome =D

I read your windshield idea and at first i thought you meant cut a circle out of the windshield...lol Now that i have reread it i see what your saying =) Should work well, just make sure you rough the edge of the detailing up since dust never conforms to geometry,..lol

Did a quick mock up, still tons to do, wheels are really rough atm, just wanted to show where I am at etc etc =D

BTW everything on this has been hand painted , yes even the body since my AB is missing a part AND i really have no idea how to use it AND the OD spray i have is a completely different shade than my bottle i decided wth..lol it's rough but hey thats what were going for no?

Yep, no problem with kicking off the WIP. The only thing I'd ask is that you try to hold off the actual weathering work until the GB officially kicks off. But yeah, no issues with getting it right up to that point!

I've been away and am reviewing posts....this one caught my eye....  Good news for me as I was anxious to start!!!!  I am going to start mine this week.

You can put me down for an abandoned Tiger and a burnt out Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf C . The tiger is almost built, and the Ausf C is not started yet. (both dragon kits)

Tiger - got your Panzer added, but which variant? Unless I'm mistaken, Panzerkampfwagen is just basically german for "battle tank" isn't it? Thought they were still denoted by I, II, III, IV, V (Panther) and VI (Tiger) respectively. But I'm very far from an authority on German armor...

vetteman - I'm just starting paint on the 1/35 version of that tank. If it builds up anything like it's big brother, you'll love it!

brutus - you're added! Welcome aboard!

hutch - It's funny, I started painting the cockpit and other bits of the E-7 with RLM 02 the other night, and thought "this doesn't look right at all". Guess I'm so used to seeing the darker grey of the later war aircraft. The G-10 is looking good so far, but I have you down for a G-6 on the roster page. Do I need to correct?

Also, to make this official so everyone can stop asking - YOU ARE FREE TO START YOUR BUILDS AND POST WIP PICS. I'm going to keep Feb. 1 as the official start date since, but there's nothing wrong with a little preseason fun! 

I should finally have some E-7 cockpit pics to post after tonight, too!

Doogs Panzerkampfwagen basically translates as Armoured Fighting Vehicle. The word panzer, though usually translated as Tank, actually translates as mailed, as is mail armour, and so is translated as Armoured.

Well, the kids were restless last night so I only got about half as much done as I'd hoped. But the cockpit is coming along, and the hardest bits of PE (the harnesses) are out of the way. 

And since I promised pics...definitely still very much WIP...

Looking great there Doogs, even if it's one of them thar flying doohickys. 

I got a bit more done on the Jeep, ill have pics up soon. Just been kinda lazy today for some reason..lol

Ok so semi large update:

I decided that i wanted a box under the rear seat, no seeing that the rear seat was on the floor, this meant i had to modify the seat and make a box (or the appearance of one. I took a time card for a MMO i play and used it as my styrene :D i made a simple 2 piece L and then cut the rear seat, lowered the back part and attached it to the top, the front section slides into 2 grooves on either side of the rear section, its a bit crooked in the pics as its not "in" yet.

I also tackled the wheels,  added the rad/lights and added the batt,air filter etc to the engine. Still tons more to do and yes the whole thing will get a shot of dullcoat as soon as im done handling it..lol
