Weathering GB - 2/1/2011 - 1/31/2012

Yeah Im amazed too, I was advised by the lady in the model shop I couldn't use with Tamiya, I thought stuff it, I will experiment a tad and they blended really well, flowed well, no separation. I didnt really thin them as I got the 'Air' type Vallejo that is already factory mixed for airbrushes.  I stirred like hell for a few minutes and it made this colour. Was happy.

Yeah the tackiness was straight out of one of their "Air" bottles.. so dont know why that was. Im using their "Blue Angel' blue for the top colour of the tri for the F6F, that seemed to be fine as.

Have not used the Vallejo paints myself, am just now getting back into modelling after 20 years off.  Was an enamel painter before and used acrylics and ink to highlight, weather and adjust over the enamels. Will probably still work in enamels as they are my paint of choice yet.  Will do some experimenting with the various new acrylics once I get my paint booth finished.  Air filter to catch paint particles, vented to the outside for fumes and carrier.

One thing I have heard about the Vallejo acrylics is that some like the airbrush type don't hold up well to handling.  Will have to wait and see.  My local hobby shop in Memphis has (I believe) the whole line of Vallejo so I will be at least trying them.

Yeah true, Ill wait and see as well. This build is the first one Ive done with this branded paint.

I love their deep sea blue though called 'Blue Angel', check out the colour, such an awesome blue and pretty close to the top colour of the Hellcats tri. Also check out the size of this thing, below is the wing root section, I have pretty big hands I guess and this thing easily covers one. Think  I'm gonna use a ton of paint >_<

Yip you know your stuff Doogs, Im using these and still couldn't name them DOH..  yes these are the said paints, thanks again.

Before I joined the two fuselage halves together I made a half hole in both sides for the radio wire to eventually come up from there, hook onto the antenna pole and wire back to the tail.

Finished cockpit, so so meh. Was fun to put this together, really enjoyed.

Got the base coats on, the base or hull was painted with a dark OD which is unlightened Tamiya Olive Drab. For the top I added about 25% white to the OD and sprayed that. Then painted the road wheels and assembled those then glued them to the hull. Next steps I think will be fading the top more then clear coating and adding decals for dirtying it up. Hope I am headed in the right direction on this.

Vetteman42 - the shading on the upper hull looks terrific!  I've still not been able to get a monochramatic scheme pop like that.

We're on the home stretch with this GB - so keep the posts coming!!

Heres where Im up to atm with the F6F. Check out the size of this thing, must've have been big planes alright.

Glad they have the gun-pits showing [unlike Tamyias Spitfire which was a bit disappointing]

Finally got the undercarriage on.. phew a job n a half I must say, glad that bits over.

The more "used" the better IMO. Havent finished things like the .50 MG chutes etc.

Furyan oh man the Hellcats lookin good and you are right the more used the better. Nice work on the 50s too love the detail work you did on them .

Doogs finally got over the track block today and they are on the tank and drying as we errr I type. Once I can flip it over I will take a few pictures to post. Dont know why such a simple thing threw me for a loop on these tracks. Anyway its nice to be moving forward on it again

Time for what you could call a small update but for me its a big one. The tracks had me nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rockin chairs. I finally took  plunge and decided to glue them on then paint them. They are glued but unpainted, that will happen tomorrow. Here's a WIP to make it official

Seems I must have done something wrong because as you see on the low side of the idler its about a half track short ( kinda like me huh  ) Anyway I think I should have spaced the five single links apart just a bit. Next time I will know, besides I think its looking ok so far.

Been busy with life laterly lol so havent had much time to work on the çat .. but got my ass into gear today ...

Ok finally got the top/side colour 99.99% done.  Now for the weathering. Ive done a small bit on the leading edges but not much. Will do.

Furyan I am liking your 3 tone blue scheme

Guys just finished spraying the final dull coat on my Sherman, pictures to follow tomorrow.

Picture time I am calling my very first armor build finished and on the shelf.

Weathering this model has been much different from the planes I build and I did find it fun and interesting. So with that said on with the pictures.

Painted the tracks MM flat black enamel then brushed on some Tamiya red brown.

Then I dry brushed Testers metal, took some time but it came out well I think.

Then I dry brushed some MM rust enamel, doesn't show up here very well and added decals to the top.

Next I misted in a very random pattern some very light OD to fade the base colors even more after scratching up and lightly sanding the decals.

Now I attached the hull to the top and started adding a dust color Tamiya Buff. This tank is from Italy summer of 1944, so I thought mud and dark dirt wouldn't fit this time and place.

Final dull coat and shes finished.

Hey Vette, very nice. Man I wanna get into more armour but sadly I just dont have the room to put them here.. (Im Christchchurch NZ, have a few earthquakes and nothings for sure here atm sadly)

Ive basically finished the underside. Hope its weathered enough, LET ME KNOW if you guys wouldve done something different.. I may change it, but I like it the way that bit came out TBH.  :)

Anyways... starting on the top. Next few days the decals here and Im done ...

Done the gun smoke and engine burn, other than those the rest should be easy >_<

Furyan- The Hellcat is looking great. One thing to remember with a carrier based aircraft. They generally touched up bare paint fairly regularly, so you wouldn't see much in the way of chips in the paint. Faded and general grubbiness ( especially in the combat areas of the South Pacific) was common. One idea is after the fading,washes,etc, "touch up" a few tiny patches here and there with fresh paint to represent repairs to the plane.

vetteman- Randy, a good looking Sherman . I should build up a few tanks and trucks with the way I like to "dirty" things up, would be right up my alley.

Finally finished this. Love the sea blue colour, wouldve also loved to see a squadron of these fly by, but alas :[

The Non spectacular white underside doesnt look that weathered from these shots but trust me its pretty wind blown and grubby [see my earlier posts here]

Pulled out my 1/32 scale pilot from another build and the 1/32 scale tow tractor for size comparison.. the F6F was big plane wasnt it!

I love the blues on that plane, nice job furyan!

Tony I really like the streaked effect you got on the sides !!!! Looks like a combination of fading and dirt and rain  and age. Well done
