Rolling right along with the spitfire now. I dry-brushed the fading on each panel by hand. I added aluminum paint chips whee the bare plastic showed and around the wing roots. the fading was pretty stark, so I added a filter of olive drab acrylic (base paint was enamel), water and a bit of future to smooth things out. The blending was very nice, and I think I will do a similar effect when it comes to dirtying up the plane.

underbelly got the same treatment

then I added full invasion stripes. I masked and painted them by hand. Decals and weathering next!

Well, finished the pin wash with raw umber oil  paint. Also, added all the fiddly bits except screens and mirror.

So now it's FILTER time!

Hope you like it.

Casper- That dio is awsomeBow Down.  Well done, sir.

Scott- Looking greatCool! I'm going to have to do some kind of armor thing soon. WWII of course. Probably in 1/48 to fit in with the warbirds on my shelf.  You guys and your tanks have got me inspired.

Owl- Doing a wonderful job with the Spit' , one of the most beautiful aircraft to take to the skiesToast. BTW , couldn't help but notice the gaps in the fit of the wing root area. Try fitting shims made from thin strips of sheet tyrene or stretched sprue in  gaps such as those you encountered on the Spitfire. I've started using some sort of shim in poor fits like that only in the past couple three years. It really helps with the filling and sanding those kind of seams.

Thanks for the kind word daddy1. If your interested in the Sd kfz 222 like mine. Tamiya makes  one in 1/48

and I think it is supposed to be pretty good.

Anyway, finished the filter. Pictures below.

On to some paint chipping then pigment weathering.

See ya

Thanks everyone for your kind words!

BTW Casper the chihuahua (the real dog whom this avatar is based) got pretty excited last night flinging around a toy. He was a little too close to the model stand and a small plush toy knocked the Bf 109 off of its pedestal! Lucky no repairs necessary as the construction of the dio was quite sturdy and nothing got torn from the base.....lucky! Big Smile

Cheers

On the bench: A-4F 1/32 Hasegawa

Just deployed: F6F-5N Hellcat Nightfighter 1/48 Eduard

I am now calling the Spitfire finished!  The final filter was a light tan, mixed with water and some flat clear (to help it flow better) applied in a few coats. Some areas required additional coats due to the Future I used for the decals still showing through. I think this technique worked very well, pooling in the recesses and around all the raised details. The plane looks too dirty to be sitting on the clean shelf, so I am thinking about making a little scene to place it into.  I've never done any base before, so it will be an experiment!

the gun stains, exhaust and darker streaking were from an additional dark gray wash that I made, and streaked in the direction of the airflow. The contrast it created with the tan is very nice.

Without further ado, here is the American Spitfire:

Excellent work going on here, everyone! Apologies I've been so awful about keeping the roster updated - it's now current.

I'm currently trying to decide whether I want to do the Tamiya Spit as a crossover build. It's a natural for the Spit GB, but also ripe for some serious weathering:

On the Bench: 1/32 Trumpeter P-47 | 1/32 Hasegawa Bf 109G | 1/144 Eduard MiG-21MF x2

Doogs,

Teriibly sorry to do this to you but i wan't to put the Arado on hold indefinately in favor of other builds that were planned. Somehow i just can't motivate myself to work on this floatplane even though it has been a wonderful kit sofar. Maybe in a couple of months.... My apologies to all of you. I think it would be best to remove it from the rollcall alltogether Doogs...Zip it!

Hey, Just trolling around in the background here, but I couldn't help but give a minor criticism of your wonderful build, OWL.

On the back of the props, based on the weathering you gave them, there shouldn't be any yellow paint left on the tips. Don't worry, you're not alone in this. All props weather more on the back than on the front, resulting in the backside of the prop tips being stripped to bare metal (or plastic, as the case may be). IDK if they painted over the bare metal with a quick swash of black, as mechanics typically do today, but the way you weathered them, they should be bare metal.

Keep up the great work.

Props weather more on the backside? I didn't know that. Thanks for letting me know, I'll keep that in mind for future builds.

Hi DoogsATX,

Am I too late to sign up?

I've just opened the box on a Tamiya 1/35 British SAS Land Rover "Pink Panther".

Hope I can join in the fun.

Chris.

You're on board, man!

Also, I'm going to officially add my Tamiya P-51, both to get a bit more post traffic and since it'll be my first stab at weathering natural metal.

I'll be building John C. Meyer's "Petie 2nd" of the 352nd FG, autumn 1944.

Thanks mate!

Look forward to seeing the NM 'Stang.

Given the time frames for this GB, i'll probably add another after my Land Rover is complete...only problem is deciding which one...

Chris.

Ok,

After most of the night spent trying to figure out how to use photobucket, I thought I'd share some of my WIP pictures.

Not much to see so far, but I'm personally quite happy with the speed of this build - don't worry, i'll get bogged down soon.

The kit practically falls together and I'm very very impressed with the level of detail.  Also, the styrene is nice and soft and reacts well to Tamiya proprietary liquid cement.

This is the first car I've built and the third piece of armour.  I've decided to try and paint the whole thing all in one go, then go back with a brush to pick out all the smaller items.  I know some of you probably do this already, but it's a first for me.  Just hope my hand is steady enough.

Ok,

So i've now primed my pink panther and other parts still on the sprue tree.  I used Tamiya acrylic XF-19.

I will me mix up a batch of pink paint within the next few days and get to work painting.  I'll also be hand painting some of the items on the sprue tree, such as tyres, tools, weapons, radio etc.

Will be sure to keep the posts coming.

Chris - interesting to watch the Landie come together. I used to drive an old Land Rover (not as old as that, but still), and have a lot of affection for pretty much everything they made pre-'94. Have to say, I find your paint-everything-and-then-brush technique terrifying! Brush painting is far and away my weakest skill, and I usually try to airbrush everything that I can on its own before assembly.

red - the Hornet's off the list. No worries!

Finally, after 6 weeks of building, i have got to the stage i can some some progress on my B-17. As this is a cross over from two other GB's, the Mighty 8th and Too many Props GB's, i will stick to posting stuff on here thats more relevant to weathering and leave the construction side of it to the other GB's.

So far, most of the work has been adding lots  of eduard PE. The front section, radio room and waiste gun positions are just about done. My next job is to do the PE boimb bar. I painted the interiour, then used Pro modeller wash in the recesses and tamiya silver weathering dust to simulate wear.

Radio room. This has since been fitted into the right side of the fuselage. The left wall of the room has yet to be added, once the seat are in.

Cockpit, i have added the IP since this, but have still to fit it into the fuselage. I need to do somethign to the wooden table and ammo boxes at the front, but not sure what yet. Any ideas.

The right and left side of the front of the fuselage. I still have to add Oxygen tanks which are on order and should be with me by the time i get to work on wedensday. So they will be fitted next week.

Thanks for looking. Any suggestion more than welcome. weathering the inside of aircraft is pretty new to me ashide from a light dry brushing.

thanks hutch. I am much more comfortable with fighter interious. Small, compact, and mostly just recessed and raised areas. Bombers like this tend to have large flat areas, and for me they are the hardest to add wear to. Not being sure how far to go. I just have to keep reminding myself its not a tank and isn't going to be covered in mud and that less is best when it come to aircrfat, in most cases anyway.

Hutch - LOVE the 109! Really like the subtle weathering around the wing root! I'll get it added to the front page.

Bish - the bomber's coming along nicely! How are those Tamiya weathering powders to work with?

I like them. I have found i have to wet the brush slightly and i don't like the brush thats included. I use an old paint brush, the same as i use for pastel chalks. I find them better to use than trying to do it with paint, and its easier to remove if you over do it.

A brief update on the P-51. Progress has been slow due to some intense disappointment with Eduard's PE instrument panel, so I pulled an instrument panel from another kit in the stash (I'm going to give that one a resin pit) and used Airscale's IP decals for the gauges.

Overall, the cockpit floor is just done save for a wash to dirty things up a bit. Still have some work on the sidewalls.
