i don't think that would be a problem.
if it smells like a duck , looks like a duck ,feels like a duck...
it has to be a j2f-6!

I'm having trouble finding appropriate markings for a Pearl Harbor SBD Dauntless, I can't find any pix of which markings/identififcation. I was thinking of getting a "Zeke" to do. Tamiya has one, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate markings, how close do I have to come. I mean to me it's important but, time is at a minimum right now.

Adam - if I'm not mistaken, the SBDs were aboard the carriers, which were fortunately not in Pearl at the time of the attack.

The Zeke flown in the attack was the A6M2 type 21. The Tamiya kit is less expensive than the Hasegawa kit, has raised panel lines and is less detailed than the Hasegawa offering. I have some markings info that shows tail codes from the Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku & Zuikaku. These were the six Japanese carriers that were used at Pearl Harbor. There is a Hasegawa kit that includes markings to build any of the planes used in the attack.

Hope this helps.

I have the Tamiya kit and I'm using it for this build. I'm using a third party decal sheet for Zuikaku markings. I think the Tamiya kit comes with Akagi marking for the Pearl mission but I'll have to check when I get home tonight to be sure.

Here's the tail codes & colors of the Pearl Harbor Zekes. The reds are the same as the Hinomaru color, orange-yellow same as IJN/IJA leading-edge ID color. Blue resembles "true blue."

This is a link to the actual color of the Zekes at Pearl. They were not painted in IJN gray.

To my knowledge, only White Ensign Models produces this color. I'm going to mix mine. Hope this helps those building Zekes !

hmmm...i heard that as well about the japs not using IJN grey at pearl, but i think that if i ever repaint my zero i made a while back (in the pre-future, slivering days!![:0]), i'd still use the IJN grey that say polly scale provides...me mixng paints is a recipe for disaster!!Blush [:I]

That's what I thought at first look, too, John. RLM 02 is more "green," however. Shifting the hue of RLM 02 towards the IJN color would be more difficult than starting with tan. (Red, yellow & white would have to be added to RLM 02)

Does anyone know how to pose the rear gunner's seat of the Kate
into the fighting position?
can't seem to find the answer anywhere.

let me do some looking in my files. some of the a/c off the carriers was inbound to ford island at the time of the second wave. not sure of the type will have to look. may be able to help on plane numbers and such also. give me a day or so.

ajacketsfan,

my search did not take me as long as i thought. sbd's were involved in the attack. the enterprise scout squadron 6 was inbound and got caught up in the second wave. 18 a/c were involved, 15 were sbd's. the best place to go for info is http://www.cv6.org/ship/logs/ph/ you should find everything you need there.

Here's the Zero, I'm going to build it and then perhaps I'll drag out the SBD...
At this rate I won't be started before the rest of you are finished... oh well.

I have that same Tamiya Zero kit. I haven't started as I am not sure what color the interior of the A6M2 was. I primarily use acrylics. MM preferably though Tamiya paints are also stocked at the local shop.

I seem to be the only one doing a VAL. It is coming along wings are on and in primer. arrghh&^*%$% just realized I don't have any IJN Grey sooo off to the LHS tomorrow.
I am doing the No1 AC 21st Section 1st Squadron from the Soryu. This is a very colorful aircraft black cowling, green topside, grey bottom, and tail section is bright red with yellow and blue markings. JOHN

At last, I got my model in the mail this morning. It's, as planned, Special Hobby's 1/72 SB2U Vindicator. The kit looks very well molded, finely engraved with plenty of details, even under that long greenhouse of a canopy. There are resin bits with the kit. And the decals look real cool! I have a couple of important projects to complete first, but it should not be that long before I tear open that plastic bag..!

Hi,
I'm a newbie to this Group build thing so bear with me!!!!

Hope it's not too late to get started???? I have been waiting for weeks for a PE set from Great Models for a 1/32 Corsair just to find out I didn't meet their $10.00 min order so they were holding it. I had them throw in a HC P-36 to seal the deal since thats a favorite of mine. Acording to Nick I may have a fit (pun intended) over the wheel well, of well, for $12, I get what I paid for. I may have to go with the kit decals, all the decals at Great Models are on a 6 to 8 week back order. No surprise, I have been waiting 3 months for Major Decals 1948 1/48 stars and bars. They also said the P-36 is on back order but would try to expidite it so I can get it within the next two weeks.

scottrc: no its not too late to join up..I don't think we have a deadline
on that.Always happy to have another modeller on board.Smile [:)]Smile [:)]
Its difficult waiting for something in the mail.I'm still
waiting for my decals.

glenoakdrummer2005: I don't think the Thunderbolt was at Pearl. If you go thru the
thread there are a few links that list which aircraft were.
Check it out and there might be something available to
you.Smile [:)]

I was thinking that another good idea for a group build could be "D-Day Aircraft." There are plenty of kits available for this project, and we could have a "done date" of June 6 (60th anniversary).

Anyone interested?

Pix, I'd probably be in for that... I'd need to kick it into high gear, but I'd be willing to try for it. I could get something and have it built by then.
