Berny, the Revell radome looks very close to the photos of the F-4Fs I've pulled off of the net. To my untrained eye I cannot see the problem. But now I know it's there, I need to figure it out.

How would you describe the problem and is there a picture or link that can show me the difference? -much appreciated.

 

The Revell radome is too pointed and skinny.  The actual radome is fatter and comes to a point gradually.  Below is the Revell radome and the Tamiya radome to show the difference.  The Tamiya radome is how it should look.

Sprubrothers has a resin radome for the Revell 1/32 Phantom.  Kind of pricey but it may be the only way to go if someone wants to correct the problem without a lot of filling and sanding.

Hello eatthis, nice build so far. I'm curious, what color scheme are you going to paint your Phantom? I did check on the 1st page but couldn't see your name and Phantom theme.

Another question, other than big aircraft limited to 1/72, I build mostly 1/48 and 1/32. I was wondering if you 1/72 builders can point me to a good OOB 1/72 Phantom so I can join the group again?

Looking forward to spicing up my sea of gray collection with a colorful anniversary or other colorful edition Phantom.

I may be biased, but my vote would be for a Hasegawa. A fair amount of detail with no serious fit issues that I have run across. Plus, Sprue Brothers had several listed on their "Super Specials" page. I have the "Immelmann Special" RF-4E in my stash now, which features and overall white scheme and very colorful decals. Maybe there might be something there that suits your Phantom Phancy. One drawback is the lack of weapons stores.

I have also heard that the Revell of Germany are decent, though I don't know personally.

I had a busy week which included my birthday!

I am still working on my cockpit and want to paint some of the indicator lights which include a lot of yellow.  I wanted a dark gloss yellow and the closest I had on my shelf was FS13538 (Chrome Yellow).  I thought I could simply mix some black and that would do the trick.  Not so.  Apparently black is actually a very dark blue because when I mixed it with the yellow I got a dark green.  (I am working with Model Master enamel.)

I looked on the Testor's website and the Chrome Yellow is the darkest they have.  I started a search on this site and found what looks like on my computer monitor the color I am searching for FS13415: http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=13415  But I can't find anyone who sells this color.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

SOMM: I would give a try at the bunch of acrylic Yellows available at Michaels. If you don't have a Michaels around, give Walmart a shot.

S O M M: I'm only taking a shot at that color, but what about adding a brown to that? Be careful though as some of the mixes I tried in the past came out looking a bit more red. What you say about the black is true. I tried making a tint one time for a canopy and it came out green.

E T: I don't intend to add the Immelman to the build here, so don't make that a Phactor in your choice of what to pick. Perhaps in 2012........?????

Hi Everyone,

I was about to lengthen the radome about 5/32" and sharpen it to make it more pointy like the Revell example Berny provided!

Dominic, you are just too funny!!    I am still chuckling!  And thank you for the birthday wish.  I hope your stuff arrives soon, it seems like we are always waiting for something to arrive.     By the way, nice work on the radome, I can't wait to see some paint on that!

Jim, thank you for suggesting adding the brown.  I just got back from Hobby Lobby and saw your post.  I will try that next time.  I think I found the paint color that I was looking for at Hobby Lobby.  It is Model Master "Turn Signal Amber Metallic".  I think it will have the look of the indicator lights I am looking for.  I will post some pictures after I use it and see what everyone thinks.

Eatthis, nice job on the panel line highlight.  I bet it is going to look nice when you put the color coat on!

Glenn, that is a total bummer about your wing root coming apart.  That had to be a very disappointing moment to say the least.  I hope it doesn't take too much effort to fix it.

S'alright, Ken. Got it fixed and threw some tan on her today, after cleaning out the flower beds, mowing the yard, weedeating, and washing vehicles. Spring is here!

Hey guys this is a real paradise for any Phantomaniac!!!!!I 've decided to build a 1/32 Rhino and specifically a late E variant.Because i really love this plane i want to make my first trully super detailed model.I believed that the Tamiya kit would be the one for my purpose but i can't find anywhere the cutting edge kit for the wing slats.I turned to Plan "B" and looked for revell F-4F but once again i can't find the cutting edge kit for the slotted stabilators.If anyone knows where i can find any of these kits please send a PM....

I don't know a whole lot either, but there are a great bunch of people in here that have been very helpful! I've learned a lot about the Rhino, where before I barely knew there were A, B, C, D, E, F, G's and even an N and S versions, and more! I have become a lot more Phacinated by them since joining this group! Also the 'net has helped a lot as well!

Hey gang! No photos this week, and no major progress to report. I did mostly small things like painting all the little blade antennas and other bits on the Geasel, plus painted the stabilators and clear coated them. Even if they don't get any decals I usually clear coat every thing anyway so everything looks more even when Dull coated. Besides, I need to do the bare metal parts and wanted everything else on them to be done so less handling. I also got side tracked painting the AGM's and the ECM pod and began applying decals to them. Kind of jumping the gun a bit there, I guess.

I felt I was neglecting the "F" so tonight I worked on it a bit, gluing the front and rear fuselage together and priming the insides of the intakes. I am trying to finish these ahead of time as I, stupidly, have too often tried doing it after they have been assembled and attached. As it is, I still need to refinish the intakes on the Geasel, as some damage was done to the original intakes during the paint stripping sessions.  As careful as I was, some of the stripper did manage to leak down the sides of the intakes. These kits have no ducting or compressors so I originally painted the back wall black, but think I will tone it down to a gray, so it will be less obvious against the white. Also, some of the construction is very visible on the floor of the intake, so I want to try to fill or mask some of that on the "F".

Re-doing stuff, or painting myself into a corner seems to be my trademark. Good thing you're finishing the inside of the stacks first.

I never quite know which I am going to run out of first: Patience, or Time!

As some of you have come to realize, I know jack about the F-4.  So, here I am with more questions...

OK, I know that the Navy style inboard pylons needed an adapter when using a TER.  I also know that the pylons were painted to match the color of the aircraft's underside (in my case, gray, FS 36622).  So, were the adapters painted to match the pylon (36622), or the TER (white)?  I'm assuming the TERs were white; could someone confirm that?

Next question:  Since use of the TERs on Navy style inboard pylons required an adapter, did the Navy style outboard pylons also require the same adapter when loaded with TERs?

I did leave out,,,,,,,TER and MER were white as issued (I know, someone prolly has a pic of a Blue one on a Purple jet, lol)

just before the time period you are building there were no "USN or USAF" pylons,,,,,,,,there were just F-4 inner and outer pylons, USAF pylons were invented later

in your pic it looks like the USAF outer wing weapons pylon has been designed, maybe during those weapons tests

if you look just above the outer TER, you can see the line of the pylon, the line that nearly parallels the ground, that looks like a USAF pylon because it curves the "wrong way",,,,a USN outer with a MER attached would point more "nose first towards the ground" and have a convex curve,,,,,the curve in the pic looks more like concave or straight
