Great work Bondo! So far it looks like a grat cockpit, don´t forgt to add weight, AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! this is a big tail sitter.

Let me know if you need pictures of a particular part of the plane, I have tons LOL.

Do you know wich particular aircraft are you going to model? what about th colour scheme?

best rgards

Jere

Jeremias, the kit as you know comes with the 511, 520, 549 and 568. It sounds like the 511 was tan and light green over light blue, the 520 was tan and light green over aluminum, the 549 was a unique scheme like the 511 but with more stripey shapes, and I can't find any record of the 568, but I believe it was not used in the war.

At first I was planning the 515 which has a strange finish of dark brown and dark green over the tan/ light green, which also exposes some aluminum!  But now I think I will do Tomba's 511.

Humbrol 121, 122 and 65 are recommended, but if you have any suggestions regarding any of these, please tell.

Also, the kit has no external stores. I don't usually put them on, as in my opinion the very brief period in which an aircraft is armed also requires all the other attentions like RBF flags etc. But I think in this case some multiple rocket launchers might work. Do you have any ideas or photos?

Thanks, Bill

Bish and Vance:

I like to scratch but if i can avoid this Super Angry fortunately just don't see it , the piece was located between other two that hide the little tail. Today some tamiya putty work needed .

A thing noticed on the 1/72 gr3 italeri kit, is that the canopy is partially wrong: on reality when opened is joined with two air intake parts

heres some example:

http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photos/0/8/1/1255180.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4077/4778818223_571a23864d.jpg

need again to check overall fit for this feature but probably even the under frame need to be downed ... Bang Head surely prefered to scratch the tail cone intead to adjust a clear parts!!

Bill -- I've been interested in doing the Pucara for this GB also and your research prompted me to take another look at the bird in the North Eastern Air Museum I photographed last November. The only ID number is '22' on the nose gear bay doors, and she is in tan/green/light  blue. I have four shots and wish there has been more light in that crowded barn of a hangar...

I don't remember if I posted these pics -- and wasn't there a decision that research pics should be posted on the original teaser thread? That's where I posted the Vulcan shots from the same trip.

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Bill,

The 511 was shot down during the war and the remains are in the harsh enviorment of th islands, so a lot of wearing is shown in the remains, but still you can see some of the original colours.here are some pictures.

I mixed the colours for the upper cammo and I can´t reember wich humbrol and model master I mixed, I do recall use the HU 65 (actually RLM 65) for th undersides. I also left all th ontrol surfaces unpainted. (the left that prts in NMF trying to not alterate the balance).

Here is my redemption

All the planes sended to th war were painted in a hurry and no one have the same colour scheme than other. So no one can realy argue with you about the accuracy of the colours.

If you are interested I can sendyou the instruction sheet of the 1/48 Aconcagua´s Pucara. I know the guy and you can trust on the info. There you have som paint mix sugestions, and also a little about armament. Let me know ok?

best regards

Jere

Bish

Nice start on the Harrier. Do you think you can scratch the missing part if it doesn't turn uo.

jere, great start, cockpit looks very good indeed. Not heard of any of those companies. Do you know there website addresses.

Bish,

as the guys said, those web sites address are OK

But arerocalcas is out of bussiness, the guy who own it past away last year. If you are interested in Argentinian subjets aerocalcas crries a large selection and you can still find some sets in online stores.

Condor decals are not as good in quality than the others but are more complete.

About Neomega are not as Aires but a lot cheaper. you can find several sets on ebay.

Thank you Jeremias for the pics. Very nice and surely original. One thing I see is that the cockpit interiors, like the divider between the fore and aft seats, are much lighter than medium gray. More a light grey. And grey does not fade much.

Thanks for the tip about RLM 65- I have lots of that.

Latest discovery of the model is that the major airframe parts are very poorly coordinated. The tail is not at right angle to the wings, the nose cone halves are different sized and the wing dihedrals are different left-right.

OK, cracked open my Sea Harrier box for a few minutes last night in between sessions with another build. Assembled the ejection seat & Fan+intake trunk assembly. SO I guess I'm officially underway! I'll pick away at this in small steps as I'm finishing up my other kits.

You know what, I officially like it. I'm not a Harrier expert of any kind, but everything looks to be correct shapes & proportions. Yes, the panel lines are deeper than I'd like, and I wish the instrument panel was raised detail instead of a decal - but how visible will it be?? (I may even use the pilot figure!! Whistling). The decal options (and placement sheet) make me want to buy at least one more for a non-Falklands bird. It has some issues and I'm sure an expert would be able to pick out some areas to be improved.

Well worth the $15 I spent on it, I think it's a very nice kit. If Airfix's goal with the new-tool kits is well-produced, inexpensive kits, this one will serve them well. I also picked up a Bf109G with Finnish markings, and would have the same comments. No, it's not a Tamiya/Dragon/Hasegawa kit, but very good value for the money.

Yes sounds good!

I never bought dragon or tamiya kits , you know i used to spend less possibly Star !

On aircraft i have only 4 hasegawa, one a very old mig-25 (when builded only hasegawa produced in 1/72) two f-104 (one bought between offers at mid price Angel ) and an old ea-6 prowler given to me as gift (in the box actually) ..

largest parts my build are from academy and italeri

The highest detailed kits i have are 3 recent revell moulds Toast  (gannet, grief and phantom2)

....... on others matters , finally a computer returned on the workbench!!!! i'm in again Clown

There is not an easy answer. I believe that the Argentine SUe had MB Mk 4 seats. Now, most images of those, including the ones from the Martin Baker www; show one little handle in the middle. But I could not find a cockpit photo of anArgentine 4 from that era. Currently they have MB 6 seats, which have the double handle.

Here's the current state of the Pucara.

Hello, Just a quick note because I´m late to work now.

Argentinian planes had (and have) one handle on their seats, here are a couple of pics of Argentinin planes you will find useful. (once was taked during the war)

The French planes have two handles on their seats.

I don't see any great pile of filler around the nose, the cockpit area must have slipped in alright after all. The more I see this a/c, the more I like it. It's actually a fairly attractive plane. Yes

Oh wow, getting to correspond with Tomba would be a real treat.

From the June 2007 issue of Model Aircraft Monthly:

"On the morning of the British amphibious landings at San Carlos on 21 May, HMS Ardent shelled Goose Green airstrip in attempt to keep the Pucaras grounded, and the gunfire commenced just as two pairs of Pucaras were in the process of taking off, although only three made it into the air. These three were joined by a further pair and they spread out to look for the landing areas.

One of the first Pucaras airborne was A-531 which was forced to fly alone after it's wingman had failed to take off and this was the first to find the British troops coming ashore, but, as it ran in to carry out an attack, it came under intense small arms fire before being shot down by a Stinger missile (SAM) fired by an SAS patrol on top of a nearby hill. Luckily, the pilot, Capitan Benitez, used his Martin Baker ejection seat to good effect by parachuting to safety from only 300 feet and managed to escape to his own lines on foot.

Soon afterwards, one of the pairs of Pucaras also found British troops coming ashore at San Carlos and they too ran the gauntlet if intense small arms fire and missiles but survived to carry out a quick attack before concentrating on the observation post directing naval gunfire towards the airstrip at Goose Green, which they attacked with rockets. After leaving this target however, the Pucaras luck ran out when they ran into a pair of Sea Harriers. In the low level pursuit that followed, Pucara A-511, flown by Major Carlos Tomba, was shot down by the Sea Harrier flown by Lt Cdr "Sharkey" Ward [ FRS.1 of No. 801 NAS but I do not know which airframe] who made a number of firing passes using his 30mm Aden cannon before Tomba ejected to safety."

Now, the first thing you notice is that although a two place aircraft, in these missions the pilot was solo in the Pucara.

I would guess that the A-511 is somewhere between Goose Green, north towards Port San Carlos. I'd also guess it's been long since spirited away by souvenir hunters. That's a 30km stretch of pretty desolate country, looks to me.

Jeremias, where did you get those pictures? looks like a personal collection.

Bish if you can get a piece of the thing I'd be ever so grateful and would use it in my model display.

Thats a great account bondo, thansk for shareing. I have asked to go back in Dec, so i will see what happens. I have flown past Goose green alot of time, usually heading to the west Islands, an di have been to San carlos a couple of times. Can't say i have seen anything, but then i wasn't looking. But San carlos is only about an hours drive from MPA, so maybe i can get a vehcile and go have a look. I would really like to get to Goose while i have a chance. And theres a military cemetery near there which apparently is Argentinian, so would like to pay my respects there.

Hey gang, just as a side note - could some of you "tag" your next couple of posts with "Falklands"? I think if a few of us do it, that tag word will replace one of the silly-tags that show up in the right hand column of the web page. If it shows up there, we could attract a couple more builders.

Falklands.

Is this the sort of thing you mean. I am sure i could get a piece back, though i might have to clear it first. But would only be a small bit. Even if the aircrfat isn't there, theres bound to be a few small bit laying around coming up out of the ground. Won't know for a while if i going yet, but i have asked to go back.

Nope! When you add a new post or reply, look just below the area that your typing appears in - there is a section there labeled "Tags". It's a feature they have built in to help with the search function on the website. You can add your own tag there or click on the Select Tags button. A bunch of us added some goofy tags just to try it out a few months back & it looks like nobody has replaced those with "real" tags yet! Embarrassed

Bish, yes, you could add the tags anywhere you want I suppose. I'm only adding it to this thread as it likely has an impact on any keyword searches people may be doing. (And I Falklands nice & big in there now that you two have done it!)

I had gone back and added it to several of my own posts from earlier but it didn't show up. There must be a requirement to have two or more people use the same tag, just to make sure one lunatic doesn't pollute the list with his own words. The programmers completely underestimated the number of lunatics in here!! Stick out tongue
