Now that I'm here, where am I??
It can make great molds though. 20 minute casting plaster can be had at the big box hardware stores [40 pounds or so] for about the same price as from craft stores. durite fresh removes large amounts of material, then when it is really old fold over something like a wet sponge and it will remove the minor spots, followed up by a wet cloth diaper {also GREAT inside the durite} to rub smooth, If you remove too much just add a wash of the plaster {you can add some color to the added stuff to help you see what you have added and take away.}
the mold is best let to dry out then paint it with something to seal the plaster ambroid cement the OLD school wood model glue thinned to a nice paint consistency then after that is dry, you can slap baby powder or corn starch
Used this method for 30 + years making artificial legs and braces....
rule #1 in retract gear, when ever possible LOOK OUT THE FREAKING WINDOW and make sure the wheels are down!
we learned this from one of my dads flying partners, he landed a P210 on Catalina Island with the wheels UP. all he had to do is look down his shoulder and SEE the wheels. Even after he was removed from the group "hacksaw harry" came out and cut the locks on the tie downs and took the plane for a flight at least he did not belly land it again
I gotsa know how do you use the Tabasco sauce in modeling?
that is simple, every one that flew out under full load should RETURN with empty racks
Nice save, Stick! You da man!!! That's a pretty cool looking kit!! Thank God for Future!!
2022 New Year's Resolution: Enter 1 group build and COMPLETE a build this year!! Why Photobucket did you rob me of my one Group Build Badge??? Must be part of the strong anti-Monogram cartel!!!

I wish that I could claim credit for coming up with the solution, but the credit goes to Forum member Gregbale in this thread from a couple weeks ago...

I am sure glad somebody else (Jake my friend) had a similar problem first.
Fantastic recovery, will have to keep that in my book of tricks if it ever happens to me. That is on outstanding build !

Future is great stuff Stik have had that fogging happen to me and fmore future cleaned it right up.
for finished pics
Randy So many to build.......So little time
Well here are pics of the "save" on the decal mishap... with before and after
and the stern after a wash of Burnt Umber
and a couple views of the boat overall
I just need to clean up the wash, apply flat coat, do some last detail painting and add the windows.
Well the Bearcat is small compared to other aircraft that used the same powerplant: F4U, F6F, and P-47. The Bearcat used the same design philosophy as the FW-190- build the smallest strong airframe possible around the most powerful radial engine available. But she fits right in with those more"petite" and sleek inline engined fighters.
and yes Lew, you better get your airfield personnel to clean up that flight line... lots of FOD damage just waiting to happen in those dusty conditions...
Taco, you lost me on that one.
Thanks Stik and Dave. I'm pretty sure a Bearcat will make an appearance in Round II. Here she is at Buddy's Used Aircraft Lot. I really should get the make ready guys to clean the a/c and the lot up. I've always read that the Bearcat was a tiny fighter. I'm guessin that was in comparison to other ship based fighters, cuz next to the Mustang, Spit, 109 and Hurricane; she's pretty freakin huge. The a/c and the Kubel are 1/72, the tank thingy in the back is 1/144 if memory serves, the Redstone is the old Revell box scale kit, the A-wing is 1/48, and the Energia is 1/288.
Buddy- Those who say there are no stupid questions have never worked in customer service.
bondoman Just my two bits. That life ring looks like a big ole target. if I were the Chief, I'd have painted it gray from the can in the locker or at least hung a piece of tarp over it.

Maybe the idea was to draw fire, I dont know... But the real boats did not hide 'em...
well chili is not hard to make, do we need to send you dry spice care package?
Stick, good save on the patrol boat!
Lewbud, excellent Bearcat! Can't believe all those small decals.......well executed!
Bah!! to you Bodoman!!! Senator Blutarsky says: NO PRISONERS!
And believe it or not, the coat of Future that applied at midday today to the toasted areas cleared it all up!!!
Owl, being a college student and all, you should really see Animal House... a great "older" college comedy set during the Kennedy "Camelot" era.
And yes I chose Bluto for a comedic analogy of Sen Kerry in order to keep it light here and the real politics out...
As was said above history is messy... from personal experience in my own involvement in a couple events that are of actual historical significance, I know that all too well...
There's no "Future" in that mess. Stik your model is toasted.
Been there tho. I'd just face doing it over.
Ok youngster, your homework in American Film Classics is to spend two hours watching this hilarious movie (be warned, it is a "guy" movie). The Senator in question is a character played by John Belushi. His character is the wild man of the fraternity who graduates college (eventually) and becomes a US Senator. Also relevant to this discussion is that Sen. Blutarsky seems to have become a codename for sitting US Senator and one time Presidential candidate John Kerry, who commanded a PCF during Vietnam.
Stik, that blows with the Future. Hopefully you'll be able to fix the problem. If you have to use the spare decals, use them and whatever controversy they may stir up be damned. History ain't always pretty or conforming to other's political views no matter how hard they try.
no, why?
Owl, have you ever seen the movie "Animal House"?
who's this "Sen. Blutarsky" you people keep talking about???
Thanx P38... I am hoping so too... tomorrow we shall find out. If it fails, there are a spare set of hull numbers for PCF 94, but that was Sen. Blutarsky's boat, and I would rather not go there... Nothing against the man or any of the crews of that boat- they all went in harms way. I respect that. I just dont care for the associated controversy BS.
Stik,, Future should fix that.. I'm hoping for u.. !
Lew, your Bearcat is a real beauty! I like it!
Well, the day before yesterday I figured I would do a quick decal application and then be ready for completion on my days off this week... quick was a bad idea. Take your time and read labels is the lesson learned. I cut out the decals, got a fresh jar of warm water ready and dipped said decals in warm water... Then it was a a reach over to the Micro Scale products for some Micro Set to lay down a base of on which to apply the decals... here comes the "Doh!"... Micro Sol is Blue labeled on the bottle... so is Micro ScaleDecal Film, which I stupidly left sitting next to the other two Micro Scale decal products. When I applied the wrong product I think, "boy this stuff is really thick today" until the realization sets it.... It's freekin' decal film!!! Applied to the bow!!! A few choice are exclaimed (Harmony Church, school of language at Ft Benning would be proud) and a quick few steps to the garage sink for a rinse under hot water are next done... But the damage is done... the stuff mostly rinses off and some swipes with an ultrafine sanding/polishing stick removes the rest. But the Future beneath appears removed or damaged. I dry it with a rag and since the decals are still soaking and I am past the point of no return with them, have got to drive on in applying them. So this time I get out the correct bottle of Micro Set and swab the area and apply the decals. The surrounding Future areas take on a slight milky sheen, but no worries yet as this has always disappeared in the past when the stuff dried. Not Today When the stuff completely dried there are major white "tide" marks left on BOTH sides of the Bow around the hull number decals... But not on the stern. Those came out exactly as intended. My best guess to cause is that the hot water wash of the Decal Film softened the Future and made it susceptable to the Micro Set... I will attempt to respray more Future on the bow as I have learned that this usually cleans up such messes with Future but there are no guarantees here...
Anyways here are the pics as it looks currently...
Port and Starboard Bow shots...
and the unaffected Stern numbers
This boat almost became a "flying boat"...
Stik, Dupes, nice work on the PCF and the Mirage. With the exception of a little red and green paint for the wingtip lights, I'm sticking a fork in the Bearcat and calling her done. Here's some pics
Thanks to the Don's indulgence, I will endeavor to have the Tigercat completed by 11 Nov. Otherwise I might be sleeping wit da fishes.
Not yet on figures, but I have some possibilities. Your right on the life saving gear... they took the trouble to repaint and tone down the entire boat from Haze Gray to a localy improvised Dark Gray concoction and left those life rings/bulls eyes right there on the deck house sides. Picutures confirm this... And your GI Jose story sounds an awful lot like the ending of Bridges at Toko Ri where once Holden is downed he briefly debates the wisdom of wearing the Mae West while trying to E&E the Chicoms...
