OK, choice for my #2 subject, a 1/48 PCF Swift boat. The re issue by Revell. But its pedigree is stamped inside beneath the deck- Monogram Models, 1967.

HvH, I'd like to participate but a quick recollection tells me that I probably have more Revell kits in the stash than Monograms? While I do have some good Monogram candidates they're also larger scale A/C of which any one would occupy a lot of my time, let alone two? But I'd like to search the stash and maybe come up with the right answers.

As for having a number of Revell kits, there's a chance that they are ex-Monogram kits and would therefore be ok to build in this one.. Whatta ya got in mind? For instance, the following 1/32 scale kits that would be ok are:

 F-51 Mustang/Phantom Mustang

Grumman F3F "Flying Barrel"

Grumman Gulfhawk (a civilian F3F)

Piper Tri-Pacer

That's about it for aircraft in 1/32.. At least I can't recall any other aircraft in that scale..

Of course, you can do a two-kit build easily with the "Red Baron" kit... The car's in 1/24th scale and the included Fokker Dr 1 is in 1/72.. It should still be around since it was re-released again in 2009...

As to what's what, just PM me a list of your questionable Revell kits and I'll tell ya if they're Ex-Monogram or not...

BTW: I would have thought that you of all people would know how to spell Monogram correctly for your thread title?Wink

Ahh, frak... Sorry..  It was a typo, rather than a spelling error.... Thanks for directing my attention to it though.. I fixed it.. See,  I spilled coffee on my keyboard a couple weeks ago, and some of the keys either stick or gotta be stabbed... If I don't hit 'em hard enough, sometimes they don't work...

Ya, I know, "What's the Maximum Effective Range of an Excuse..." applies...

But in my defense, if you have any idea how many times I've typed "Monogram" today, you'd understand how I missed seeing it, lol.. It's like my brain filled in the missing "o" and I just didn't catch it...

HvH,

I like the idea of the GB especially since that other Revell/Monogram thread pointed out how these two often disparaged brands have brought us a ton of affordable kits that IMHO can be built up as nice as almost anything even currently offered at whatever price.

Hammer: You guys are killing me!! How can I not join a GB to be come a member of this estemed group? I started this hobby building Monogram kits and still love them (raised lines and all). I have quite a few and hope to introduce my son to them within the next couple of years!

For sure I will be building the F-105G "Wild Weasel" 1/72 Out of the box of course!

Kit #2 will be Monogram F-4J 1/72 scale! This will be a crossover from the Phantom GB. Haven't started it yet.

Thanks,

Travis

Hans von Hammer

The Hawk and Corporal are ex-Renwal kits, if I'm not mistaken, and the Hunter is a Revell-Germany product that also was released under the Revell/Monogram label, but was released post-Revell/Monogram merger...

Hate to be a stickler, but after all, it's "Monogram Mafia"...  Just like the real Mafia, which traces your roots back to the "Old Country" in order to be a "made" man, the kit has to be able to be traced back to an original Monogram release in order to be "made"...

Confused  Renwal sucks.  But I completely understand.

$59 isn't a bad price, you could have saved a few dollars getting them individually in the later issues, but probably would have eaten up most of the savings in added shipping.

I think I've paid $10-15 for the F4B-4s which are the most common, the Goshawks tend to run around $20. Olimp does a very nice P6E so I haven't been hunting the Mongram version, but it seems like they also run $15-20. The blue boxes tend to run higher so I'd say you got a pretty good deal with a cool box thrown in.

Accurate Miniatures reboxed a combo set with the F4B-4 and P6E a few years ago, but those seem to have all dried up.

Put me down for the F7F Tigercat and F8F Bearcat in divine scale.  Bondo, Starfighter Decals also does resin cockpits for those kits as well.

Yep. The $ 59 one. I didn't wanta buy the more expensive sealed, white box, collector's item kits as I didn't want to give shelf collectors the runs...

Less than $ 20 a kit works for me, plus the Goshawk seems to run a bunch more.

Thanks for the decal tips, Aaron.

I built the F4B-4 and P-6E last year, and am currently wrapping up the F11C-2, I found them very well behaved little kits.

Starfighter decals offers quite a few decals and some aftermarket bits for these kits if you are so inclined (or the 40 year old decals give out on you). I bought a bunch of his decals, and was very happy with the set I used on the P-26 Peashooter.

I better start using annual leave so I can catch up with my group build commitments, but I wouldn't be able to look in the mirror if I didn't go for this.

I'll do a 1/72 P-36 to start, I'll decide on the second later. Revell and Monogram both did a P-36, but I double checked and mine are all Monogram (one is even in the old blue box).

If I do succeed in completing these, I'll hop on with a Revell 1/32 Hawk and a Revell Corporal Missile, the corporal is from the recent repop, the Hawk is a bit older but is from 'The History Makers' series and also appears to be a repop.

The only Revell kits that are eligible are those that initially started life as Monogram kits, and have been re-released by Revell...   Sorry, but none of those kits qualify as Monograms AFAIK, Beav...  (If someone has info and a source to counter that, sound off)

The Hawk and Corporal are ex-Renwal kits, if I'm not mistaken, and the Hunter is a Revell-Germany product that also was released under the Revell/Monogram label, but was released post-Revell/Monogram merger...

The only 1/32 scale aircraft (that I'm aware of) Monogram ever produced are the Phantom Mustang, F-51 Mustang, Grumman F3F, Piper Tri-Pacer, and Grumman Gulfhawk (civilian F3F)...

Hate to be a stickler, but after all, it's "Monogram Mafia"...  Just like the real Mafia, which traces your roots back to the "Old Country" in order to be a "made" man, the kit has to be able to be traced back to an original Monogram release in order to be "made"...

I just scored a 2nd hand 1/48 Monogram A-37 Dragonfly and F-100D Super Sabre , it will be about two weeks before the kits arrive and hopfully with all the parts in the box . If everything is complete , I'll go with these two in Vietnam camo scheme .

I have my fingers crossed everything will be okay with the kits .

I'll think about it; I'll be thinking real hard about it.  We'll see if I can't get the other GBs out of the way first (3, but really only 2) and that scud off my bench and into my as yet on-order-since-july office space.  If I do succeed in completing these, I'll hop on with a Revell 1/32 Hawk and a Revell Corporal Missile, the corporal is from the recent repop, the Hawk is a bit older but is from 'The History Makers' series and also appears to be a repop.

Monogram Mafia Group Build
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Sunday, February 6, 2011 1:04 AM

Build any two (2) Classic Monogram kit s(or Revell re-releases of them), any subject, any era, any scale, and get "made"... Crossovers, WIPs OK as long as they aren't over 50% compete...  Start date, any time from right now to 31 March, completion date, six months from your start time.. Start-time cut off is 31 March...  I say two because, face it...  You wanna piece of the action, you gotta be committed to "This Thing of Ours"...  If you can't swing two Monogram kits in six months, "den fuggedaboudit"... You ain't what we're lookin' for... Ya gotta be an "earner" if ya wanna get "made"...
