Stik,

Absulutely great work my friend and it has been a joy to follow from start to finish!Yes

So,..... We have reached the cutoff date and i believe Maxfax and Vetteman are the only ones still building right? Havent seen any update on the S2F tracker for a bit....

Any of you guys i forgot to mention that are still building please let us know so i can keep track of stuff. It has been another great year and another batch of fine ASW goodies built! Thank you all so much for participating.

Reminds me of my 1/144 sub i am working on. I haven't posted an update in a while so i will take some shots of it later today. I am currently in the weathering stage, trying to rust her up a bit more before i call her done. And since i am building a meditteranean sub myself i will borrow stik's method on the green algea growth tooStick out tongue

Today I finished up the rigging. I added insulators made from drops of Gator Glue, and painted them brown once they dried.

U-29

and U-81

Tomorrow willbe a flat clear coat to tone it all down and tie it all together... then they will be officially complete.

and a peek with their surface Kriegsmarine big sister which I am also finishing up...

Today's updates so far- First up, I completed the drybrushing on the lower hull to similate marine critters & growth

The Type VIIA, U-29 I am depicting as when she was operating around the British Isles at the outbreak of war so has more of a gray and "colder" look

The Type VIIC, U-81 I am depicting as when she was operating in the Mediterranean and has more of a greenish warmer water look...

both together

then I decided to have a go at rigging U-81, the Type VIIC. Since I could not get sprue to stretch quite as thin as I wanted, no thread that is thin enough, and did not feel like speninding money for something appropriate uch as fly tying line, so I went with a suggestion from Manny and used hair. My second daughter has long dark hair so all I had to do was raid her hairbrush for a few strands.

here a few closeup shots

and an overall shot- the hair gives a perfect scale effect.

Thanks BSY. I can not say enought about the Revell U-Boat. It really is a beauty of a kit. I still need to do a bit more dry brushing and then a final flat coat to tie it all together and add some antenna wires... yikes!

today I began the dry brushing of lighter colors on the lower hulls for marine growth. I used Humbrol colors RAF Sky on the Type VIIC and VVS Subframe Gray on the VIIA

I mixed up a darker shade of Rust using Testors Rubber and Rust and did a pin wash on both U- boats. I think after this wash I will quit while I am ahead and work on some marine growth coatings on the hull below the waterline.

Here is how the look now...

Type VIIA

Type VIIC

and both U-boats together

almost at the finish line Wink

Max, the Type VIIC measures in at 7.5" and the Type VIIA at 7.25". They are prety small.

Vette, I know what you mean about overthinking the approach. Some nights I can spend hours thinking on how to tackle a particular issue. But then the next morning I will go at it with whateve rthe last method I thought of that seemed best.

I am tackling the weathering in stages. After yesterdays Burnt Umber pin wash today I did a wash of Humbrol and Testors Rust on the hulls and coning towers. I need some critique feedback here guys, BIGTIME! I was inspired a bit by Ed Bergerands two subs he posted a week or two ago in the Ships forum, but I do not want that much of a beat up look on mine. Just a well used mid to end of patrol look.

Type VIIA

Type VIIC

The surface detailing on the Revell VIIC is really superior to the Hobbyboss kit (or the Bronco TypeIX U-Boat that I have in the stash). I will have to have a look at the AFV Club and Mirage 1/350 U-boat kits to have a proper all around comparison. I do wish that Revell would do more than the VIIC and VIID in 1/350 U-Boats.

Stik those subs are looking great man cant wait for the weathering touches to be added.

My little subs and destroyer have been started and waiting for the first coats of paint, got tiny little parts all over the place glued to tooth picks. Problem is it seems like I have been over thinking things and doing nothing. Gotta shut down the brain ( or lack there of ) and just start painting geeze.

Stik- nice work. I envy you for being at that stage. How long are the subs? I can't visualize that scale. Finished off all lower hull work and PE (rudder assemblies, dive planes) and now onto the deck. Tons of PE, so it will be slow going.

Ah well.. perhaps an ASW III GB will happen Hmm

Today I began the weathering. Burnt umber pin washes over most of the hull and conning tower except for the decks. Then it was an overall wash of Burnt Umber.

BSY try this site for some great info.

http://uboat.net/index.html

I am not overly well read on U-Boats either, but I have learned quite a bit since last year when I started building these little 1/350 U-Boats and doing online research on them. Two types are your primaries during the Battle of the Atlantic, theTypeVII and the Type IX. Other Types were involved but those were the most numrous with theType VIIC being the most widely built and fielded.

For good information on painting a U-boat check out this article.

Bsyamato,

Two webshops that are bigger and carry alot of everything would be www.moduni.de and www.hannants.co.uk

Try searching with the word submarine and you should get some good results. I have also sent you a PM about the subject...

Hey Richard,

Hope you had a great trip. Where in the US did you go? Originally from there? Your English is too good, so I would say yes!

Rob

Rob,

You are flattering meWink No i am not an american by birth, instead i am dutch. My wife however is an american so that did help with the lingoBig Smile

I went to visit Washington state, Walla Walla area. I so love it there... My father in law owns a cabin up in the blue mountains, an outcrop of the rockies and it is just breathtaking upthere even though a snowstorm a few weeks ago did entirely cut us off for three days with no power, water or phone. They had to literally bulldoze their way up the mountain to get us out of there. It was crazy but fun at the same timeStick out tongue

bsyamato

sorry but received the mail from the vendor and my selected sub are not avaible

yamato, what sub were you looking for exactly? Maybe the shops i buy from online might have em so i could PM you with the link if i find it.

Hey Richard,

Hope you had a great trip. Where in the US did you go? Originally from there? Your English is too good, so I would say yes!

Im just struggling with this sub. Got the deck on now, mainly just the superstructure to build, but I have a ton of PE parts to add. I estimate finishing maybe in June, or July, so I am glad you won't close this GB until I am done. I am mentally finished with this project, so it has been taking me longer than anticipated. I bought a HMCS Snowberry for Christmas to accompany the sub on my shelf, and I think that one will sit for quite awhile.

Bsyamato, nice work. The PE ladder is nice. I got one with a Royal Class FW 190 kit I bought last year on EBay. I used to be gung ho on PE, but I am starting to shy away from it- the time addition for me is becoming prohibitive- I need to get some kits done quickly to feel like I have at least finished something!
