Well here are the end results, this lot was ok, for only $8 it was defiently a cheapie. The decals were probably the worst I've ever used and it needed a heap of filler. My airbrush skills are slowly getting better…

Now I'm making a Corsair, but the kit didn't come with USN decals, does anyone have some spares in 1:72?

Here are the pictures -

try soaking some decal setting solution on it. If that dont work, glue it down with a clear coat brushed where it needs to stick.

Thanks for all the help, but I now have a rather annoying problem, the decal on top of the wing didn't set properly, the front part of the decal didnt stick, what do I do??

RRB: Great work on the P-40! Don't worry I've been doing masking for years and there is ALWAYS some overspray/paint seeping under the mask. And yes Owl's right on the correct paint colours.

looks good RRB. If I remember correctly , the P-40s that would later be the mounts of the flying tigers were originally going to be shipped to Britain, and were thus painted in the standard British camo colors. The planes were then sent to China, and the Flying Tigers just used the planes as they were, without repainting them.

Here is the paint job on the p-40. It looks quite strange with no decals, the flying tigers had a strange camo scheme. Im not sure if i painted it very acurate. i used humbrol acrylic 169 & tamiya XF-73 dark green for the camo and humbrol acrylic 90 for the bottom.

the masks only leaked twice on the bottom which was ok.

I'll fix it if I need too, I might level it with thinner instead of sanding it though.

I never noticed my signature was all messed up, I can't tell on my PC, I must have a larger screen, your using a laptop aren't you? Wink. I'll try and fix it.

from the pics, it does not look like sanding the rear bulkhead flat should impede canopy fit. Canopy fit can be improved with plastic shims or white glue.

also, RRB, can you fix your signature so that there is not so much white space? It takes up a lot of room and creates needless scrolling. Thanks.

I'll try, but if I sand it down it will give me troubles with the canopy fitting, as it is the canopy will have lots of gaps, can you use filler on clear parts?

Should I sand it down and risk the canopy not fitting? Or leaving it be and have to canopy fitting, and plus when the canopy is on you won even be able to see it? But I have been thinking about cutting the canopy so I can have it in an open position, then I would need to sand down the step, and the fit of the canopy wouldnt matter if I have it in the open position.

yup, kermit, thanks. That is what I meant!

It does not matter if it is a step or a seam...it is unsightly and you would do best to get rid of it. It will make the area look much better.

I know what she's talking about, but that is a step not a seam, the higher side is casting a shadow, so it may look like a seam. As for the other circle, that is a rough area, I can sand it down a little more with some wet & dry, (using it wet). But if I sand it down too much there will be a dip in the wing.

Apart from that, thanks, worn look on the seatbelts? Yes I did that on purpose… Whistling

Baron,

On behalf of Miss OWL, i think she meant this:

In the circle with the arrow you see that the rear bulkhead is not a smooth surface like it should be. And personally i couldnt help adding the other circle.... that area looks like its still a bit rough but it could be the picture fooling with my eyesSmile

Nevertheless the P40 is looking great and i do love the worn look of the seatbelts!YesYes

Thanks, but I'm staring right at the plane, and I don't see any seam… only a step, it must be the shade in the step making it look like a seam?

Well here are some pictures of my p-40b, this kit was only $8 and its okay for what i paid for it. i didnt need as much filler as some of my other models made by airfix, and this one had no cockpit detail what so ever so i had to scratch build some detail. Once agian i forgot to take pics of the cockpit before i sealed the fuselage Embarrassed. But i hope you can see some of the deatial in these pics. Im going to give pre-shading a second shot, this time im going to do it with my air-brush not a pernament marker, since this kit was only a cheapy if i stuff up pre-shading its going to be not biggie.

Here are some pictures:

Things are coming along nicely with my tigershark, pictures should be up tomorrow, the plane is together and almost ready for airbrushing, I first have to fill in the seams where the elevators joined.

Ive got a BBQ to go to tomorrow so airbrushing is out of the question I just simply don't have time!

Owl: She looks fantastic! Love the red trim, it really sets the model off from the crowd.

Howard: Looking good! I love how the ribbing came out.

Now if only the weather will cooperate. Very windy Saturday early, rain later. Sunday looks to be awash tooStorm

Oh well Whistling, we're getting into what usually is the dry season here in Florida so we'll take what rain we can get.

Very nice OWL!  I noticed you also staggered the retraction of the gear with one coming up a little earlier than the other. My dad built the old Monogram 1/48 P-51B DingHao kit back in the 70s in the same pose. That's the way they come up. Very effective on a short stand as if the fighter was just a few feet off the ground. Although at some airstrips they might not have used much flap depending on a number of variables. I'm curious about that. I'll have to check the P-51D-1 flight manual on my book shelf and check it out. I have the Revell 1/48 D model and a Tamiya B model I've thought of posing in similar fashion. Have to try the CD jewel case 'spinning prop a go too. You could almost hear that Merlin roar past.

Got some pics of how the painted ribs turned out. I was hoping to shoot a base of MM insignia white after work today but the weather wasn't cooperative. Also looks like central Fla. is in for a few windy, squally days so I'll have to try painting in between rain showers. Using MM enamels so length of drying time is my main worry. I'll wait for dryer weather before shooting any Testors gloss coat.

If I can get the paint on this weekend, I should be able to get this Golden Age racer finished up by mid week .

Howard

BTW- if any one out there gets  the chance to look at old -1 flight manuals , they make for some interesting reading. My favorite parts are the emergency procedures and other "WARNING"s that , if not followed correctly, could definitely spoil the day.

ask and you shall receive! Haha, here are the finished pictures of my little mustang on a stick. I ended up breaking the original mounting pin, so I drilled out both the Mustang and stand to receive a piece of sprue. I guess I cant detach and fly it around the dorm anymore, huh? Oops

Also, I had some difficulty with the flash and lighting for the final pictures. I eventually placed the plane under a bright window and took a picture with flash. The bright window behind the mustang helped even out the flash so things weren't so washed out, but I still had to fiddle with the pics on the computer to get them to look right!

The decals that were included in the box were old and a bit out of register, so I sourced the majority of the markings from the spares box!

without further ado, I present "Rosemarie"
