Beautifully done casper. That's a nice lookin wildcat.
Owl, im looking at rattle cans. The hand painted sections were just to get an idea of the colours. Base green (olive green) will be done by hand (since its already done and looks like its sprayed anyway)
It will be done in the tricolour RNZAF Euro 1 scheme.
Then im going to put a 75sqn logo on the belly. In 1969 one of the aerobatic display teams from 75sqn flying Vampires took on the name "Yellowhammers" My aircraft will make out like they kept the name until after they received the F-5's (They went with skyhawks instead, but F-5's were in the running)and they produced a muted display paint scheme.

The Cat's done. Not the greatest kit (as I had 2 Tamiya kits on the go as well) but pleasant enough to look at all the same. I really should have gotten a more recent mold of a Wildcat but this is fine for now and was quite cheap.
Also I had a radical idea for kit companies to re mold fuselages. Why do they do them as two halves?? Why not let us build it from a series of rings from nose to tail like they really build aircraft! This would eliminate the seams and the joins could be part of the panel work. Now I wonder who I should write to.....

Got on the coat of Ocean gray. The blutak feathering really worked well this time.
Ok, painting time again
...canopy interior colour...
...gray primer...
...flat white upper;
...and lower..
...now the instructions called for a gloss white to sit above the flat white. I decided to go for the FS17875 off-white. It's slightly creamy and contrasts well against a flat white. Will provide some variation against the top layer of ocean gray;
I also used blu-tak to give it a slightly feathered edge.

Finally got the masks for the Wildcat!
Just need to resand a crack in the front upper fuselage and seal the wheelbays. Then let the painting begin!

Its coming along, but nothing actually fits. I feel like im building one kit out of 4 or 5 donor kits.
Ill get there eventually though.

Ok, this little build is OVAH! Was a nice little kit to work with. The blue on the nose turned out a little lighter than I'd hoped for but otherwise I', really happy with the colour scheme. Very striking with the zebra stripes.
Ok, so I couldn't wait!!
Alclad dries pretty quickly so I was able to remove the masks and check out the result. Despite a small bit of bleeding of the black into the white in some of the panel lines on the port wing, it turned out very well. Some remasking and extra white should help with that.
I'm so glad I decided to paint on those stripes instead of using the decals!
Some more progress on the paint job...
Masking off the white to lay down the black stripes;
...black gloss coat for the black stripes and Alclad primer;
...masking off the black stripes;
...and finally the coat of Alclad Chrome. I decided to go for chrome instead of aluminum to give the plane a bit of a wow factor!
...all will be revealed tomorrow...

Ok, so got the little bird together and all masked and ready for painting.
...interior canopy colour;
...prime coat;
...the "Blue nose";
I decided early on not to use the decals of the black and whit stripes.
These invariably do not quite match up or overlap properly no matter how good they are designed. I have decided to paint them on;
So these white bands on the wings and the rear fuselage will be taped off ready for the black gloss prime coat. Then the black parts of the stripe will be masked when the Alclad chrome goes on. If it all goes to plan then there should be lovely black and white stripes on a chrome finish with a blue nose.

Just need to wait for the decals to dry on the IP and then I can get the cockpit in and sew the bird up.

So my masks for my Wildcat (OA GB) and my Dornier (WTMP GB) seem to be held up in the Xmas post! So I am now cracking open my 3rd kit on the go! Never done this before
I'm doing the Mustang "Snoot Snipers" P-51B with a Legendary Productions cockpit set in resin. I'm also going to do the metal finish in Alclad chrome. I have some left and I think it'll look pretty sweet.
Ok, I've stalled a bit on the Cat. Awaiting the Eduard masks in the post. They are taking an awfully long time.....
So all sanding is complete, when the canopies are masked it will be painting time. The instructions call for a matt white underneath with an ocean grey top, patches of gloss white between the two shades. I am not sure how effective that will be so I am going to use the FS17875 slightly off white to help.

Got this thing together. Some nasty gaps underneath where the fuselage didn't quite meet owing to the poor fit of the cockpit. Wings fit very well BTW.
Got the fuselage and wings glued together. The fit wasn't that great on the fuselage. The cockpit shifted a bit but nothing could be done about that. It should still look fine when completed. I also plan to have the starboard wing folded but the port wing straight. Not sure if wings were abler to be folded independently of one another but it will look good like this.
Very pleased with the paint job on the propeller. I used Alclad Chrome for the middle section.

Got some more work done on the cockpit. Also the engine came up well. It will be visible through open panels on the side of the fuselage so I wanted to make sure it looked good enough to display.
Really sharp work there Casper. And since you've made the blood sacrifice to the great modeling god Tamigawa she's gotta turn out great!
Ok, got some work done on the Wildcat. This is a pretty old kit, ejector pin marks and flash everywhere!
Cockpit's nothing too special, has some detail on the side walls but it's all gotta go!
Ok lots of scraping and cutting. Some truly nasty bits had to be cut out including the seat. Note my blood on the plastic on the rear cockpit wall near the headrest.

A coat of primer...
...and finally that lovely Tamiya XF-71. I love the colour of this cockpit paint, so nice to work with it again after a series of gray cockpits.
Ok, next is detailing the instruments and the IP.
P38, Howard: Frankly I think there is some truth in you're as old as you feel. I swear I know some kids half my age so gloomy and down with life they act older than me.
Howard: Really that is some beautiful work. Military aircraft are expected to be somewhat dirty and grungy so you can get away with some rough spots. I don't do cars because the finish has to be perfect, air racers seem to be pretty much the same.
