It's been a long time since I've used it but I seem to remember the buffing being much shiner than the non-buffing (which always seemed to me to pretty much silver paint). I really liked the Metalizer and it worked very well but gave up on it when if you so much as give it a dirty look it would peel up on me. Masking must be done with really low tack stuff like Post-It notes.

I was inspired by the Metallic finishing article in the January issue.  The author used Alcad II but my local hobby shop doesn't carry it, so I'd have to order it online.  Is Alcad really worth it?  The stuff costs more than twice what MM does per bottle.

Haven't posted much of my work on "Magic Carpet" yet as I haven't hit the NMF portion of the build - but I'm getting pretty well into main assembly, so here's where it's at.

Here's the engine, next to the Revellogram unit:

The cockpit. Painted with MM Euro Dark Green to represent DDG. Eduard placard set and an Ultracast seat:

Fuselage together and wings on. The join at the wingroot is so good that I didn't have to use Tenax along the top at all.

Hopefully I'll be shooting the Alclad soon!

I'm just about to start an Academy F-86F with a bare metal finish, but I haven't really done much serious work with MM's metalizer line, I thought I'd ask here before diving in, is there any difference in the finish between their Aluminum (non-buffing) and Aluminum Plate (Buffing) airbrushed Metalizers?  Does the Buffing vs. Non-buffing make any difference?

I like this colour scheme for the P51. Looks so clean and fresh doesn't it

Finally got a nice weekend and shot some of the Alcald primer on my P-47.  Found some spots I missed.  Time to go back and sand some more.

Casper if they ever start importing Tamiya paints here in the States again I will have to get a bottle of it. I really like the way it worked for you. Thanks for sharing

I'm on holidays at the moment so I am pretty much spending all day in the man cave at the mo!

I bought the new Tamiya panel line wash. It's excellent. Any excess can easily be removed with some enamel thinner or it can be smeared to give the weathering look. It also has replaced my thin oil wash to help with highlighting landing gear and cockpits. It's got an extremely small application brush which makes it ideal. Thoroughly recommended!

  ummmm sorry Casper I have been a bit ummm fuzzy lately I have updated the front page with your build, ya might want to check it make sure I got it right. Still kinda feverish. Hey I ment to ask what you used for a wash as the panel lines really came to life and it also gave the model the look of some very hard use.

On another note, you are buildin em so fast we are gonna hafta start callin you Casper The SPEEDY Chihuahua

Love a blue nose 51, I surely do. Casper well done sir, I really like the way you weathered it and brought out the panel lines. Just dont know how you build em so well in that small a scale, because it looks bigger than 1/72.

I am sorry I havent been keeping up with things here, I have been under the weather the last few days with 102 temp and coughing both lungs up it seems. Anyway I will get your build on the front page as soon as I can.

Ok, this little build is OVAH! Was a nice little kit to work with. The blue on the nose turned out a little lighter than I'd hoped for but otherwise I', really happy with the colour scheme. Very striking with the zebra stripes.

The pit looks great Casper Like you I think the stripes look much better paint than using decals. Glad to see another like me too who cant wait to get the masking off a model.

Ok, so I couldn't wait!!

Alclad dries pretty quickly so I was able to remove the masks and check out the result. Despite a small bit of bleeding of the black into the white in some of the panel lines on the port wing, it turned out very well. Some remasking and extra white should help with that.

I'm so glad I decided to paint on those stripes instead of using the decals!

Some more progress on the paint job...

Masking off the white to lay down the black stripes;

...black gloss coat for the black stripes and Alclad primer;

...masking off the black stripes;

...and finally the coat of Alclad Chrome. I decided to go for chrome instead of aluminum to give the plane a bit of a wow factor!

Ok, so got the little bird together and all masked and ready for painting.

...interior canopy colour;

...prime coat;

...the "Blue nose";

I decided early on not to use the decals of the black and whit stripes.

These invariably do not quite match up or overlap properly no matter how good they are designed. I have decided to paint them on;

So these white bands on the wings and the rear fuselage will be taped off ready for the black gloss prime coat. Then the black parts of the stripe will be masked when the Alclad chrome goes on. If it all goes to plan then there should be lovely black and white stripes on a chrome finish with a blue nose.

Had to replace the sidewalls with the new resin ones. lots of nice detail...

Cockpit painted ans test fit;

Just need to wait for the decals to dry on the IP and then I can get the cockpit in and sew the bird up.

Great Casper I believe this is the Tamiya kit you have listed already ? I have been wanting to see on of the Legend cockpit sets for the Tamiya 51.

So my masks for my Wildcat (OA GB) and my Dornier (WTMP GB) seem to be held up in the Xmas post! So I am now cracking open my 3rd kit on the go! Never done this before

I'm doing the Mustang "Snoot Snipers" P-51B with a Legendary Productions cockpit set in resin. I'm also going to do the metal finish in Alclad chrome. I have some left and I think it'll look pretty sweet.

Eatthis the front page has now been corrected and, well, I really like your build story and the idea behind it. You always come up with the umm most unusual ideas, makes it fun don't it

in the early 60s the atlantians found themselves in need of a high performance interceptor to discourage the russian bombers that regularly probed their airspace.
2 types were considered the f104 starfighter and the bac lightning.
the lightning had better performance but was severely hampered by short range for this reason the starfighter was chosen (it was later found that bribes by lockheed may have had an effect aswell).
the f104 was built under liscense and renamed the shovel beacause it went like poo off a shovel (the name was later found to be very apt for another reason. the af104 was also by far the most efficient tool in the armed forces for digging large holes in the ground with unfortunate consequences for the pilot)

this SHOULD be a fairly simple build because theres not much in it i intend to try my 1st nmf using alclad and normal humbrol paint. i also intend to try in idea i have of sanding different panels with different grade micro mesh to see if this alters the shine of the finish

the 104 is an italeri kit :)
