Manstein's revenge

 VanceCrozier:

Mine was more of a "rushing to do something before I had to leave the house" accident, but it still means a mess to clean up!

Pics!

Port side before the glue issue, it looks so happy!! Also before the "mist coat" I applied to dull down the decals which looked too bright for the Falklands planes.

http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af250/VanceCrozier/Falkland%20Islands%202012%20Group%20Build/IMG_1377.jpg

The underside decals, after I sliced & applied the roundels in halves...

The rest are "after the mist coat" . I think I like the effect, maybe took it a little far in places. Note the brass rod replacing the kit pitot tube.

Blade antennas in place...http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af250/VanceCrozier/Falkland%20Islands%202012%20Group%20Build/IMG_1424sm.jpg

And the screwed-up port-side roundel - what a mess! Dead

http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af250/VanceCrozier/Falkland%20Islands%202012%20Group%20Build/IMG_1428sm.jpg

BUT, I think I found the solution sitting in the same box, combining roundel decals from the two other options seems to measure out at the right sizes. I'll try it on a blank piece of styrene first just to make sure, but this is the plan:
http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af250/VanceCrozier/Falkland%20Islands%202012%20Group%20Build/IMG_1430sm.jpg

Hey, is that one of those new-tool Airfix Harriers?  I just bought two and they look cherry in the box...

Manny, what are you doing in here, these things were all built after the RLM went out of business!!! Yes, that's the new-tool Airfix kit. The panel lines are a little too wide for my taste but overall it's a very good kit. I bought it for the Falklands option, but the other two decal options provided are making me think I need some more Harriers in my life. (All, I should have my finished pics up before the weekend!)

I bought two of these M0J0's recently---the kit you have and the GR9 (with the sexy nose-art)

...very nice kits.  I also got the Eduard pre-colored cockpit zoom for 'em...very nice.

The ejection seat looks good for a 1/72 jet, but the Eduard cockpit sets would finish these up nicely.

The GR9 looks as nice I'm assuming? Too recent for me though, too gray. (I know, I just finished a dark sea gray Sea Harrier!!!) I'd like to pick up a Harrier GR3 & slap some winter ambush camo on it...

Two questions:

1) How did you get the roundels to lay in the intakes--cut em?

2) What happened that smudged the one in the pic?

Manstein's revenge

1) How did you get the roundels to lay in the intakes--cut em?

I positioned them over the intakes, blotted the water out but didn't add any decal solvent. Let them dry an hour or so to make sure there wouldn't be any slipping around, then cut them & add the decal solvent.

Manstein's revenge

2) What happened that smudged the one in the pic?

ARGHHH! I already had the decals in place with a little (but obviously not enough) clear-coat overspray. Then I began adding those foolish blade antennas. Put a little drop of glue on the antenna, while in tweezers, then drop it into place. Simple right? Then one of the antennas popped out of the tweezers. I picked it up, put it back in the tweezers & dropped it into place.

However, when I picked it up I got a smudge of Tamiya Extra Thin on my thumb, then I put my thumb dead-center on the roundel as I picked up the model again. Smudge-a-palooza!! I had to do a little roundel roundup from the spares on that sheet to replace what I smudged!

Well, as much as I hate to admit it because of the sore spot concerning the wing, your build up to that point looked rather cherry. I really like this pic:

What color grey is that?

The build went fine, just my thumb getting in the way. (And I'm happy with how the repair turned out too) The gray is a mix of Tamiya acrylics, pretty close to RLM 74 though. I wasn't going to get into FS#s and paint chips on this one, every colour photo from the Falklands era seemed to be different,

The gr3 updates

basic camo is on (humbrol 144 grey and 116 green), also re-engraved panels detail

Added the two holes near the wings base, engraved also A.p.u. doors and  other important panels missing on the kit in the above engine zone

Alright, I'm calling my Sea Harrier 98% done. I didn't like how the Sidewinders turned out so I'm re-painting them. And as always after pics are taken, there are a couple of tiny little things that are bugging me, a little touch of paint here & there before moving into the display case....

jetmodeler,

I grabbed a Monogram 1/48 AV-8B back in November at a model swap meet and started building it about 2 or 3 weeks ago.  It's about 80% done (it's already painted and I just gloss coated it tonight) but I didn't take any progress pics along the way.  If I had seen this GB earlier I would have taken some pics but its the same as TREYZX10R's Harrier so they'd be similar anyway.

Do you mind if I still join?

~Fly-n-hi~ Sure you can join. I added you to the roster and your ready to go.
