Speaking of midnight oil...had one of those hurry up and wait moments with the Fiat tonight, so on to the Hayate!

Wow wood drop tanks! I would've lost money on that bet ,learn something new everyday! Doogs nice seat, and yes RAF interior green is a very close match . Bsyamato it looking great keep burning the midnight oil!

This morning (it's about 3:00 am ,can't say this night) mixed some color for the upper zero surfaces, trying to obtain a correct zero green:

Another layer and some correction to the mix seems to be needed mhh...

Interesting, I wasn'a aware of the wooden drop tanks. Most I've seen are the underside colour. As you said painting them slightly lighter or darker or adding a slight tint sounds like a good plan to me.

Excellent! I'll track down some pics of Nakajima interior green and probably use Tamiya's interior green - I've got enough of their paints that I can "push" it a bit in pretty much any direction if needed. 

Looking around, I learned that IJAAF tanks were actually made out of wood or bamboo, not metal (due to shortages). Not quite as crazy as the USAAF paper tanks, but still, interesting. Also have references to the tanks being painted some kind of Japanese version of olive drab. Basically - I find tanks the same color as the underside dreadfully boring and thought it'd be interesting to do something a bit "off". Example, if the underside is that light green-grey color, using straight-up light gray for the tanks.

I did find a few references to yellow, but nothing connecting them to the Ki-84. Course, I'm pondering painting the thing blue, so...

Doog: Yeah night and day difference between seats there.

Cockpit paint: Every reference I've seen for Nakajima aircraft like the Ki-84 give a greyish- green colour. It looks very much to me like RAF interior green. Mitsubishi a/c had a yellowish-green that looks very much like USAAF interior green which may be what's confusing you here. There may have been some Ki-84s with NM cockpits but I haven't seen any references to them. Personally I'd go with Nakajima interior green if you can find it in your paint brand- if not RAF interior green should be close enough not to make much difference.

Drop tanks: Most references I've seen show them painted the underside colour. Some may have been left in NM aluminum as well. I've seen the yellow tanks but not sure where and when they were used. Maybe someone else here has more information.

Anyway, my two cents for what little it's worth.

BTW: 'The Bug' is looking great!

Question(s) for the group:

1 - Cockpit color for the Ki-84? I've been getting at least three conflicting choices - silver, light gray, or something similar to interior green. Is any one right? Are they all right? 

2 - Drop tanks. The Tamiya instructions (which I so don't trust BTW) say to paint them the exterior color, but I can swear I've seen builds where the tanks look like they were painted with Tamiya XF-4 Yellow Green. Seems to me that'd be a lot more visually striking...any habits of drop tank painting out there I should know about?

Wow, I'd assumed he was 1/48th until I remembered you do 1/72nd. That is some great detail, most 1/48th pilots I have aren't that well done.

The diorama sounds really cool, love to see you build it. I've started several but keep adding stuff to them and they get so big I never finish most of them

Bsyamato: Nice! Very smooth clean paint job there. Looks like you're back on track.

Is that RAF pilot 1/72nd scale? If so that is some really sharp molding.

here some update:

two coats of mix grey, waiting for total dry bet seems enough

painted others grey pieces too and the engine cover with mix of semigloss black and dark blue (instructions says 50/50 % but seems incorrect, i used a little percentage of blue)

Out of topic, if you need good raf pilots try the new revell set

some poses allowed and good and not soft plastic easy to gut, clear and modding. The luftwaffe set probbly at same good standard.

Now left to detil the main wells and retouch the removed paint from frames and the rest of work wil be "standard " finishing work (if no more bad things will come )

Trey the correction seems accomplished, the mixed grey seems grip good withouth the primer but i'll leave the color dry for two or more days for sureness. Just today weather finishe a  3 heavy raining days!

Thanx guys, problem i hope resolved, after removed the bad paint and cleaned even the panel lines (and lots of swearing because even parts of frame paint was removed) ,i brushed on the camouflage grey mix withouth priming more He seems working. Plastic seems to work good with my mineral thinner .

I forget about but the zero is really heavy for the kit dimension  

been there...done that....sounds like my Oscar

Bsyamato: ACK! What you've got done looks so good, and then have to redo everything. Gosh I'd be really mad. Good luck to you my friend. I've been angry with having to sand down and repaint the tail of my P-47N, I should be happy the whole paint job didn't go bad.

Still, as good a modeler as you are I know you'll be able to fix it.

I`ve built both the Kate and Jill kits. They`re really nice, detailed kits. I do want to pick up the Nachimo offering just out of curiosity. I built the Jake...wasn`t a great nor horrible kit but I think the only kit of that aircraft in 1:48.

 

 

 I had so many fit issues with the Jake that I gave up....that and the kit was more toy like....no interior to speak of...still I agree the 1/48 option...even with all my negative comments about it I bought another not too long ago...I figuered I will add a Val cockpit tub....they should be close enough since they were both Aichi...until some one comes out with a new one(hint...hint....Hasegawa...wink wink...Tamiya)

 

Wink wink...Great Wall Hobbies...may have a slim chance there...
