Great looking George. I like the results from the silver pencil.

This has to be one of the best GB's ever. And I'm just a lurker. Wink

What can I say- you guys are awesome!!! Bow Down

And to think I really hesitated to run this...

LOL Cool

what's wrong on your avatar Cliff, were's the skirts?

Ditto I miss the Turtle

A forum member found the goose-stepping North Korean women offensive so I took it down. I've got some more Gammy avatar pictures on my hard drive at home, I'll get one up tonight hopefully.

Hmm

Hmmmm. I hope no one is offended by my airplane.

Rick: Bow Down Wow, she turned out fantastic! Love what you've done here. I really like how the chipping came out, I've had this pencil for years and never tried anything like that with it- I'm going to have to give a whirl!

And the photography looks great too, love the deck you've got there!

Lol, guess I'm lucky in a way that I don't really have a work bench and have to pack up all my stuff when I get done or I know it would look worse than yours Big Smile

The Mary may not have much detail but she looks like a nicely molded kit though.

Effectively the table is my use only, even promise myself to organize better the space but when i'm sitting just open the pc and get sprues in hand to work Sad

I'm allowed to have a permanent setup in the house, but it is in the attic.  It's a very nice area, home theater for watching military and history channels, 1/2 bath, kitchenette.  So there is a housekeeping code that I have to adhere to.  I have to keep things pretty well cleaned up to keep the peace.  Gamera, I'm glad to get a good look at your use of the metallic green inside your flaps and gear bays.  I've had an uneasy feeling about that color on my George, but seeing another example of it makes me feel better.

I've managed to finish the Otaki, Kawanishi N1K1-J George.  I was going to do the salt "paint chipping", but my test work looked worse than crappy, so I chickened out.  I sprayed a coat of silver first and then covered with Modelmasters enamels.  JN Green and Grey.  I was hoping to "chip" the top coats with masking tape, but I had a tough time covering the silver with the topside green.  It took four coats to get a good cover over the silver, so chipping with the tape was out of the question.  The underside grey covered easily, and I got some good chipping using the masking tape.  I had asked you guys about the silver artist pencils you used so effectively and  decided to give that a try on the upper surfaces.  I'm pretty happy with the results, so here's the walk around.

I detailed the cockpit, but really closed it in with the closed canopy.  I was able to drill out the gun barrels to improve their look.  Added hydraulic lines on the landing gear.  Added some rivet detail around sanded areas at the seams.  Drilled out the exhausts (I love my micro bits).   The Otaki kit decals were used.  They've been in the box for over 10 years and were delicate.  I had a couple nicks and fractures in the application, but I incorporated those imperfections into the weathering and chipping.  The decals did lay down very well.  They are thin and gave a painted look.  The yellow decals for the front of the wings crumbled at the first attempt,  The yellow was brush painted with Vellejo Acrylics.  I gave the whole thing a Krylon rattle can clear flat coat (2 coats).  I then finished her off with some black and brown pastel chalk staining for the exhausts, and a light staining around the gun barrels.   After that with a light stream of air, Mr. Otaki's George spun her propeller and flew off to the display cabinet.   Rick

BTW: Here's the Tamiya Zero sans decals.

I've put on about half of them since these photos.

Dream of a kit, bit pricey but if you want a late model Zero and can find it cheap you can't beat the Tamiya kit for detail, ease of fit, and variety of options.
