Panzerpilot,

You have to have an independent photo hosting site.  A lot of us use Photobucket, some use Flickr, I have a Fotki account as well, but it doesn't work with FSM for some reason.  I'll walk you throught the steps via Photobucket, since that is what I have. Open photobucket in another window, then upload the pic to PB.  Place your cursor on the pic you want to use, a drop down menu will appear and then click on the button that says direct link.  This will automatically copy the pics url.  FSM should be open in a separate window.  At the top of the message box, there's a row of buttons.  Click on the one that looks like a couple of frames of film.  A box will appear, right click on it and hit paste.  Your picture should be inserted into the message body.  Hope this helped.

Doogs, have the kit now.  Just need to figger out which markings.

Buddy- Those who say there are no stupid questions have never worked in customer service.

I have a "how-to" re: posting photos on my blog under the Techniques tab. I'd post the link but I'm on the iPhone at the moment. But you can get there from the link in my signature.

You can also get them on ebay from seller sk1968sk in Poland for $14.49, includes shipping. I've purchased from him a couple of times and they arrive in approx. 1 week.

Just bought eduard masks for a punch of my models, including the P-47 for this GB.

Im wondering, since im getting into model master paints, what color is suggested for the interior of the P-47? Usually its interior green but that seems too green. Ive been seeing a yellow chromate color but not sure the exact name or mixture to get that color. The yellow color looks soo much better for the P-47.

After looking through some photos it seems the cockpit is a different green than the wheel wells. I will have to do more research. First time builind a P-47, learn something new every build.

Republic P-47s were painted Republic green on the interior, not the standard zinc chromate green.  One factory used zc yellow for wing interiors like gun bays and wheel wells.  One factory used zc green.   Then those were repainted zc yellow at depot level.  There is a color photo of Gabby Gabreski's plain being reloaded that shows the zc yellow.

From what I researched, P-47s used yellow zinc chromate or green zinc chromate, depending on which factory it was built in.

I used the green zinc chromate in my current P-47 build

P-47 GB? Yeah, I'm in...it's about time I built another one. Big Smile

Not sure which kit yet - either a 1/72 Hasegawa with a buttload of AM, or a 1/48 Tamiya/Academy/Hasegawa. Will get back to you!

Ok, so here's a Q regarding Gabreski's P-47... Seems there is some controversy regarding the under sides of  his plane-s. I'm planning to do the full invasion stripes and was wondering what the consensus is on the undersides. Seems the "options" are, full metal undersides, lt grey fuselage with natural metal underwings, or full lt grey underneath... Opinions? My lean is natural metal, either full or wings...

P 47's painted with green zinc chromate were re-painted with yellow zinc chromate before they were sent over seas.

I feel  have to sign up for the Big Beautiful Jugs. I am going with Gabby Gabreski's P-47 because I live in and am from the same town he grew up in. Oil City, PA.

Thanks this is great

Ken

DoogsATX, Finished up some work in the kitchen and repainting the General's barracks(Grandson's Room). Got a make shift bench set up in the spare room for model building. Ordered the Tamiya 1/48 P-47D Bubbletop, Alclad and Superscale decals for 353FS/354FG. Hope to be joining this GB on opening day.

Sorry I was MIA yesterday, everyone. Got laid flat by something...best guess is the sinus infection from a few weeks back came roaring back a lot meaner after the antibiotics ran their course. New drugs are kicking in, though, so I'm at least physically alert today!

All the new entrants have been added to the roster - if you haven't provided (or decided on) kit and scale yet, just le me know at some point.

Not yet - wife and kids leave for Houston today, though, so I'm hoping to get to that sometime over the next few days

Well...I think I've narrowed my first build for this GB down to two possibilities. I'm pretty well decided on a razorback because, believe it or not, I've never built one before.

First would be Trumpy's 1/32 Razorback, done up as John Drummond's "Raid Hot Mama" of the 405th FG. There's only one decent period picture I've found of the ship, and it only shows the cowl area, so here's someone else' build:

The second would be Tamiya's 1/48 Razorback, done up as "Magic Carpet" of the 366th FG. If anybody's seen the "Legend of Y-29" episode of Dogfights, Magic Carpet figures prominently as the plane Bob Brulle took up that day, though it was actually his CO's personal ride. Love the look of the NMF cowl ring, cowl flaps, canopy and wings:

Choices, choices!

Never seen the episode of "Dogfights" you mention but I do love the look of "Magic Carpet". That pic does lead to a question... what is the color of the turtle back area? Pic looks to be streaked, faded and, color shifted (note the orange "no step" area). The turtle back almost looks to be faded OD.

The episode's probably my single favorite of the Dogfights series since it's one of the ones that sticks with a single engagement the whole time (though the F-8 "Last Gunfighter" ep is greatness, too). It's been awhile since I've watched it, but if I'm not mistaken Brulle gets involved in a treetop-level chase with a 109 where he can't get his guns low enough to get a firing solution (until he does). Considering most of the ETO dogfights took place at altitude, the ground-pounding nature of Y-29 is definitely different.

The fuselage as a whole is OD with some white ID bands on the stabilizers. Probably pretty faded and beat-up as it was operating in the 9th AF vs. the 8th, and forward-deployed to Asch, Belgium, which all records indicate had very primitive conditions.

Here's my take, after mixing a bunch of color combinations to get the shade that  IMHO most closely matched the unrestored P-47D-30-RA in Detail & Scale page 40. Testor's Flat Green and Flat Sea Blue about 50/50 look to be a good starting point over a white primer base, then darker wash for shadows and lighter drybrush or chalk for highlight or sunbleach.

Unfortunately good cockpit pics of non-resto'd Jugs are tough to come by...I've got the Aero Detail and the recent MMI Bubbletop books, and it looks like a lot of restored bits are done in either green zinc or interior green, though the cockpit tubs remain largely DDG.

When I built "Hairless Joe" last year, I used MM Euro Dark Green and was pretty happy with the results. Depending on the pictures you use as reference, I think I could have maybe used a touch of blue. Or a touch less blue. Stupid reference pictures!

Doogs, Since you mentioned a couple of reference books I was wondering what good refernce books folks might recommend on the Jug. I am an absolute reference book Junkie. More so than a "stash" addict. It is a part of our hobby that I really enjoy, reading and researching. Thus far I have pickd up the following books:

P-47 In Detail & Scale, Squadron, Kinzey

P-47 in Action #67, Squadron

P-47 Thunderbolt at War, William Ness, 1980

P-47 in the European Theatre, Squadron, Ernst McDowell

P-47 Aces of the 9th & 15th Air Forces, Osprey (enroute)

Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

Joe - definitely check out Mushroom Media's P-47 Bubbletop (Amazon link). Apart from overall excellence (very geared toward the modeler and detailer), it also comes with full 1/72, 1/48, and 1/32 plans.

I've also got the Aero Detail P-47 book (#14 I believe) - it's good, but too many shots of modern resto-jobs for me to be entirely comfortable with it.

I don't remember waht I used for "All Hell" in the mighty eighth build last year (notes are a wonderful thing). I want to say I used MM interior green with a drop or two of flat black.
