Thanks guys!

Yeah, man. I am sold on the alclad. It goes on like silk. Lot's of work involved in getting a good finish, but well worth the effort. I am looking forward to doing my 1/32 Tamiya P-51 with it sometime this year.

Looking forward to your pics, Doogs. I like that you are doing your Jug with NM wings and colored fuselage!

Tom that looks excellent! Ain't Alclad the best?

FINALLY got to the Neutral Gray last night...pics up soon. Even keeping it simple, the preshading worked out pretty well I think!

Doogs:

Thanks.Your jug is looking good!!

I just put an overcoat of "Aluminum" on there. It's not so shiny anymore, though you see a shiny base in it. Interesting. This is my first major experiment with Alclad. You certainly do need 'a lot' of Airframe aluminum to cut the black gloss undercoat. Especially in a 1/32nd. I used a whole bottle and it still had a sheen too dark to my taste! Also, for a better coat, I learned that 10psi works much better.

So, for now, a more traditional aluminum sheen.

Tom - that looks dang shiny!

Was hoping to break into the neutral gray last night, but the boy came down with an ear infection, and a two-hour battle to get him to take his medicine seriously cut into bench time.

And masking the Jugs took far longer than anticipated.

But  tonight...it's on!

Doogs:

Very nice on-line book there- thanks for pointing it out. Curious to see how the Revellogram kit comes out with the streak pre-shading. And what can I say? The Tamiya kit looks just great- I swear each NM build you're doing looks better and better. Cool

they got 1200 in the can. it's what i use. i feel 1200 is best out of the can. it's so thin you can just build up layers. i tried spraying 1000 and it wasn't so nice.

AB - I don't rattlecan primer since I don't feel I have the control I want (that and I have to rattlecan in the driveway, and as my bench time comes at night...it's interesting). That and I think Gunze stops at MS1000 in rattlecans.

http://store.spruebrothers.com/gunze-sangyo-mr-surfacer-1200-170ml-b515-p14614.aspx

In stock from time to time...I use it on larger models, like 1:48 multi-engine stuff, much quicker and the control is good, all you're looking for is a uniform coat. After it dries it doesn't look near as thick and no detail is lost. Just depends on the mood I'm in. By the way, some nice looking Jugs in here...

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this turns out for you Doogs, it seems like a rather neat idea.  By the way, what did you use for primer on the Revellogram? Keep up the great work!

More progress last night, but not as much as I'd wanted. Needed to push the stabilizer ID bands further out, so no painting until they're dry enough to mask (tonight). Instead I finished masking the Revellogram's canopy, shot the undercoat of black, painted some bombs white ahead of yellow (for stripes), that kind of fun stuff.

I also unmasked the Tamiya's canopy. It's natural metal while the fuselage is OD, so no need to save it for further weathering or anything:

And I'm trying that streaking pre-shadey stuff on the Revellogram. This is just the first, some flat black. Planning to come back with greys and browns for the underside and dark greens and browns up top. We'll see...

Randy: Nice! The D is coming right along and your N is almost finished, really nice job there.

Doogs: Looking good sir!

Well I sprayed the first coat of airframe aluminum on the N last night. Didn't think to put the cap on the colour cup and poured some paint on the model Sad Cross your fingers I can sand it off and clean things up without much more extra work.

Great stuff going on here guys.  The tips and info pouring out of this thread are the things that make this site great.  Keep  up the great work!   I'll humbly post a couple pictures this week.  I've got a start on my Academy -N model. I'll get up to speed with a few pics.  I'm far enough behind here that I'll be using some of the things you guys are to talking about to paint my NMF, thanks.    Rick.

mrmike - Thank you! Looks like you are sitting a real-live P-47? Now THAT is awesome!

Von Sisco

Tom-That big bird looks fantastic! Nice stand by the way, it's what I use alot of times. But there is one thing I gotta know, do you use throwback Pepsi as a leveling agent or is it more for gloss? Whistling Keep up the great work!

I should have some pics posted up this weekend. I'm totally engulfed in my P-61 build right now but I should finish up my Jug this weekend. Besides, the Tamiya kit has been sitting there just aching to get built!

Hi Ed. Thanks. Yeah, the Pepsi throwback is very versitile. It's still a bit tacky this morning. I've got just a bit of sanding for the random dust bunny, but overall it went on without a hitch. Next is "Airframe Aluminum", most likely misted over with Duraluminum, except for some masked "new" panels. I am looking at 'dark aluminum' for the turbocharger outlet and lower panels over the exhaust. 'Aluminum' for the gun panels, and oh whatever else comes to mind... Almost...there... Looking forward to pics of that Black Widow...

Gamera - Yes. Sometimes a regular old toolbox hides some nifty modelling tools! (I just had to be careful not to torque down the vise grips too much! Surprise )

DoogsATX

Came across this post on another forum the other day, and I'm thinking about trying something like this with my Jugs (to a less weathered/tore up extent). Really like the streaked pre-shade and the buildup of thin coats of different colors. Almost like dot filtering with an airbrush!  Check it out. What do y'all think?

Doogs: That's interesting. Not sure I like it or not. I do some pre-shading but that looks almost a little too much yet I still like the effect here. Hmm

Tom: Yow, super shiny! Very nice, and the vice grips look as good a stand as anything Wink

Doogs-Your builds are looking great! As for the shading, I think it looks very convincing when all completed. A quick question though, how much thinning do you do to your final coats to achieve this look? Coming from an automobile background I am still experimenting with techniques.
