Hey sub that looks and the over abuse this plane took made that level of weathering realistic.  On any other plane i would say that i tooooo much.  Good jobYes

So here it is in all of its finished glory!

SDC16371

Still turned out a lot rougher than I expected, but after its all done up and finished, I think it actually looks the part of a very over-used Soviet aircraft. Looking and photos and thinking about the circumstances in the winter of 42-43, this kind of abuse was normal!

SDC16372

One thing I am still not crazy about, the gun and exhaust smoke stains came out looking mroe like oil stains. I'm not sure what I did differently this time, since I used the same method I have on previous builds with great effect. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with it.

By the way, the decal sheet has this as a "winter 42-43" bird. The writing on the side says "Yaroslavskiy Komsomolets" or "All Union Leninist Youth Organization of Yaroslav." I have no idea how good the translation is, I just like the way it looked.

Even after five models, this one still had some major firsts for me including first scratchbuilt seat belts, first attempt at heavy weathering, first real use of accrylics, first time making an antenna wire (not bad huh?) and as seen below, first use of MIG pigments.

SDC16374

I do really like the way the bottom turned out. A lot of streaking with Tamiya Smoke along with splotches of brown paint and MIG pigments to give the effect of a mud runway. In spite of the landing gear, I still intend to hang this one up, just in an angle that suggests takeoff. Especially since now I'm doing a P-39 to hang along with it as a "fighter escort."

Overall, if Murphy had built a model, he would have had less problems than I did. But I blame myself for almost all of them. The kit itself is very good, with lots of detail and for the most part, good fit. Yamato, I know you said you were eyeing it, and it is a good one!

Thanks everybody for the help and encouraging words along the way! I look forward to seeing the rest of you do your builds! Now as I set this aside, I look at it and think back to the desperate days in southern Russia that winter...

SDC16369

"No time to chat, another mission to fly!"

Thanks

My airbrush skills just aren't anywhere close to good enough for post shading. I might be able to try pre-shading again now.

Gotcha updated, Frightful.

So I just used MIG pigment for the first time, and I have to say Wow! That stuff was really easy and looks perfect! Now I'm going to sleep on it, but I think I'm done torturing the Sturmovik, and unless I think of something else to do to it, I will do the final clearcoat in the morning.

Thanks

TroubleMaker 66 Yes i was talking about pre shading i didnt have any ideas for a color for post-shading. Thanks.

Sub  I just recently got in to 1/72nd scale so most of my planes are 1/48.  I have two 72nd planes to do soon,  Italeri F-14, F-16.

Would preshading work on ships or what is the naval equivalent?

PS My entry is an M4A1  Sherman 1/35 by Italeri.

I had a bad experience with thinning paint so have not tried it for a while.  I tried non thined enamel and acryl paints for panels.  One idea i will try soon is with a sharpie not heard of it but it makes sense.

Are you talking about pre-shading?  The key to that is to spray your paint in several thin layers so you don`t entirely cover the pre-shaded panel lines. Personally, I prefer post-shading and found Tamiya X-19 Smoke a very useful tool for that. Again, a steady hand and light touch is the key.  I think a sharpie will work fine for pre-shading. I`ve read where guys have used mechanical or drafter`s pens and india ink for pre-shading. Just about anything will work as long as you don`t totally cover it up with paint.

I've heard of fine point sharpie as well, but have not tried it. Still think it would be way too big for 1/72 though. And yeah, there's no way you could do decent panel lines with un-thinned paint, especially enamal. WAY too thick. I've always preffered enamels, but all of this is really making me reconsider accrylics...

Thanks

Thanks Checkmate. Maybe I'm rationalizing, but the more I look at actual WW2 photos, the more I see that the Soviet planes (especially IL-2's) that didn't get shot down really did look that rough after a while. Scary thought for pilots.

Frightful- I've tried washes and preshading and all of that, never with any luck. This time I tried a much simpler approach to the panel lines. I got a really small paintbrush, thinned accrylic paint down to a watery consistancy, and carefully hand painted each line. Took forever, and if you look closely it's far from perfect. But not bad all things considered. I'm curious to know what you have tried. Sometimes the key to finding something that works is just trying something new!

Thanks

How did you do the panel lines? I have tried on several models and they ended up all thick and didnt show at the end.

Sub, thanks for answering my request.

First off, I'm certain that the Hancock will have little planes for you to fly around.  So will the South Dakota--at least a couple of scout planes.

Second off, I think to did a remarkable job of salvaging the Sturmovik.  From photos I've seen, winter camouflage looks ragged, and I think you accomplished that.  It looks whitewashed, and the variations and streakiness give it a lot of character.

I've never been good at the weathering angle, so I don't do much of it (OK--basically, "none').  Congratulations on having the nerve even to try it.

Now--take those little planes on a celebratory mission. Toast

Psycho- So are you calling it done? Looks Good! Yes

Checkmat- Since you asked:

SDC16344

Found these in the bargain bin at the LHS and figured WTH not? Not opening them, though, because if they have little planes in them, I will likely spend hours flying them around the room on mock missions. Embarrassed Some of us never grew up...

As for the Sturmovik? Well, after spraying the base coats, I decided to try a dot filter to break up the "painted" look. I had never done one before and made a very stupid rookie mistake.

Enamel + Enamel dot filter - protective coat =

SDC16340

After completely stripping off the paint from the stabilizers, I decided to walk away before I sent the model on a test flight. That's how I wound up at the LHS to "buy supplies."

After calming down and considering options,  finally decided to just paint over the darn thing. But I couldn't airbrush because I already had the decals on. Fortunetly, I had recently had a seminar with a guy who does excellent handbrushing. I applied the things he showed me....

SDC16342

And after several layers of alternating green and white, I came up with this:

SDC16343

In the end, it came out a lot rougher than I had intended. I don't know if even the Russians would have flown a plane that looked this rough. But I pressed on and hand painted the panel lines usinggreen on top and "engine grey" on bottom." Also first time I had ever done this!

SDC16346

SDC16347

They look a little rough too, but at leastthey break up the paint job. And it's the first time I've had any success with doing panel lines at all. Have tried other methods with no luck.

Now time to add smoke/oil/mud stains, hopefully that will draw it all together and make the bad paint look a little less ridiculous.

So that's where it stands. Feel free to comment/critique, though at this point I'm not doing it over again, I'm just applying lessons from it to the next time.

Thanks

Then this is just the right time to bring her out--in honor of the event!

That's a great looking piece, psycho.  I like the subtle weathering and shading you've accomplished.  Nice work.

After long awaiting my pictures, here they are! Sorry it took so long, work and other things side tracked me a lot. Aside from the missing pieces it went together very well, fit is pretty good, nothing major needs to be done to fix part joining. I didnt build the wheels for moving it because I currently do not have room for them on my shelf.

We like to see failures as well as successes! Wink

In that case, you will REALLY love the Stormovik. Right now it looks like a warbird that either fought off the entire Third Reich by itself, or got lost in a Sherwin Williams. I'm not sure which yet...

Sometimes I wish the forum had some "facebook-like" features, such as status updates. Right now mine would say "damage control." Sad

More to follow once I finish pulling my head out of my *** and figure out how to save the Sturmovik from the AA guns.

PS: Checkmate- your bad influence is complete. As part of my "retail therapy" for ruining the Sturm, I caved and bought a carrier model!

Nice carrier Checkmateking02 !!! this is ofne of few things i miss in my stash!!

Thanks, bsyamato.  Seeing your work here, I'm sure you'd produce an excellent looking carrier.  Yesterday, I finished putting rigging on Lex's sister, Saratoga, but haven't finished any planes for her.

Troublemaker, I don't know much about my camera, either.  It's a Kodak, about six years old.  It's got a lot of settings, too, but I just leave it on "automatic," and let it decide what to do.

LOL in this case japanese are better Big Smile nikon or canon..

which type is your camera? the better way is to try some manual setting , or look at macro option.

Len, I like what you are doing with the Buffalo.  What kind of paint did you use?

Thanks Checkmate. I used Model Master aluminum buffing metalizer for the base coat an Tamiya acrylics for the rest. Sealed everything and prepped for decals by spraying 2 coats of Future. After I decal I`ll do some weathering and I`ll be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel....
