DoogsATX

Alright. I'll be doing the Fiat G.55. It's currently soaking in the sink. Tigerman, I hope you don't mind if I make a small start on it - I'd rather try to bust into it while I still have the bit between my teeth. Otherwise I might get distracted by something shiny!

As for schemes...oh god yes this one:

Doogs thats awesome! What are you planning on doing for colors? I'm having a tough time hunting down colors for my Macchi and crossing the Italian names to FS numbers and Gunze paints.

Model Master has a line of paints for the Regio Aeronautica. Only four...but they happen to be the exact four I need (save the yellow, which I can improvise).

Unless I can work out some equivalencies in Gunze, I'll probably go that route.

There's also always White Ensign...though I've had a rough time getting them to spray well. Big coats...like Russian 4BO green on a T-34? That's easy. But I can't get the stuff as silky as I can Tamiya, Gunze or even MM. Though...their color accuracy cannot be beat.

well I have kits in all catagories: Modern, WWI, and WWII, land sea and air, but since it seems like you have a dearth of land subjects I am leaning towards this one... something up my alley Wink 4WD firepower

Getting a little jazzed. My beautiful RB model AM barrel should be here in a couple of days. Huge, huge improvement over the kit one.

I'm going to wash my sprues. The one drawback to my build, 48 wheels with rubber. Dead

Excellent Enrico!

One of the PCM kits has a paint chart that lists MM as well if anyone needs.

Quick question - is verde anticorrosione the interior cockpit green? The Fiat G.55 manual calls for interior green, and in pics I've found, it looks similarish to US interior green, but slightly yellower and lighter.

Couldn't resist some mild cleanup and test-fitting last night.

Overall, not bad at all for a limited run kit. The fuselage fit is very good, with no crazy gaps or steps. Though the stabilizer join is going to be, well, tricky:

The other fun part's going to be the wings. Five parts. Uppers, lowers, and a center section. The gear bays join to a wing spar that will allegedly lend some support to the proceedings, but I may add some strip styrene along the bottom join for some internal strengthening.

Here's a view of how fun that area's going to be!

I must admit that the look of those inline Italian fighters have really caught my eye over the past year. I don't know much about them, so i should bone up on their stats.

Regarding Italian paint colours, there is the site STORMO and if you go to their paint section, they list different paint brands (including Model Master) and only the appropriate Italian shades.  Unlike the WEM site, those paints are listed along with the corresponding FS number.

hmmmmm, I'll be lurking for sure - possibly entering the fray at a later time. Not sure what I have in the stash that could qualify...

DoogsATX - nice choice, that is the kit I would have thrown my vote at if I'd seen your post earlier. Love that scheme as well. Yes

Italian Starfighter thanks! that helps alot but i'm still missing a few, like verde minemetco 2 and 3. I might post questions later when i have my research at hand.

Doogs, yes WEM has some great color accuracy but like you said, they airbrush and dry weird, I only use gunze for base colors because they are flawless in every way. That fiat is huge! especially compared to my 1 48 Saetta, thats gotta be the smallest 1 48 i've ever built. And man, I thought german camo was interesting. Tigerman this is going to be a sweet group build!

verde minemetco 2   = FS34092

verde minemetco 3   = FS34102

Both these paint colours are available in the following brands: Floquil, Gunze Sangyo, Humbrol, Life Color and Testors.

Jack

I think so Nathan. I often think that Italian subjects get overlooked. During my Blitzkrieg in the West GB, myself and a whole group of modelers built their first French armor. We learned a lot! I have a new respect for their vehicles.

This should be very informative and fun. Besides, I like those cool logos on the wings. Yes that should be incorporated with the Italian flag in the badge. Hopefully someone has some designer talent.

please don't but the wings signs on the italian flags, origin of these signs are really honorable ("fascio imperiale" weapon sign from old Roman Emperor) but politics that had ideas to use this sign was absolutely not honorable .... (IMHO) .

This logo is just two stylized Roman emperor weapon age ,one inverted respect the other one. The weapon was formed by a beam of birch rods that sustain an axe.

USA used this sign too

please think another idea for the badge.

Sorry to barge in here, but I'm a student of Roman history, and there's more to the fasces than spelled out here. I figure since this is the Italian GB, a few of y'all might be interested in some deeper history around the bundle of sticks.

The fasces actually date to the earliest history of Rome - a lot of classicists believe they're originally of Etruscan origin. They were carried by the lictors who preceded first the kings, then the magistrates of the Republic. They carried a twofold symbolism. The bundle of birch rods represented the authority of corporal punishment. The axe - capital punishment (as in...beheading). During the Republic, magisterial lictors did not carry the axe within the border of Rome itself, as the power over life and death rested with the people and the assemblies. Save when a dictator was appointed to oversee some emergency.

The fasces are easily one of the most recognizable symbols of Roman power, matched only by the eagle. The early and middle Roman Republic had massive influence over the founders of the United States, as can be evidenced in everything from early architecture to the structure of government (heck...the Senate) to Washington's returning his sword in obvious imitation of Cincinnatus. The fasces were essentially shorthand for republicanism.

When Mussolini rose to power, he too appropriated the fasces for his own ends, along with dreams and rhetoric of refounding the Roman Empire. Not entirely unlike the way many modern politicians in the US appropriate the flag or the founding fathers. A difference of degree, certainly, but not really of kind.

Anyway, that appropriation of the fasces is where the term fascism originated.

I must say it's quite eye-catching. I like it. What's more Italian then the Tri-colors and Sophia Loren? Thank you for the designing it Jack. If anyone has some critiques please feel free to air them and we could tweak it.

Don'tknow if I'll get started today or not. I might glue the hull together. Most of the work will go into the roadwheels.
