The P-40N I'm doing I've picked up a sheet from Zotz decals. Four a/c and only one with a shark mouth. I'm intending to do the young lady in her birthday suit (sorry Owl)...

What scale and variant are we looking for? www.spruebrothers.com has a lot of sheets too, including Tuskegee ones in several scales for the P-40....

ww2psycho

Anyone know where I can find a decal set for a P-40 painted in OD/NG? Im sick of seeing ones with sharks mouths and the camo. Not saying I dont like them but yea.... It seems to be what most P-40s have now.

a quick search on Squadron turned up some...even Tuskegee markings! Cool.

I found some great pics of P-40s in various camos, theaters, and countries.  All are P-40s under different names.  Any questions  just ask.

DoogsATX

But if I'm not mistaken the two-stage was more critical for high-altitude escort duties and didn't make a big amount of difference under 15,000?

Or not. Brain is fried this afternoon...

Your right Doogs.

But, do you think the P-40 could have been a participant  in the BoB and other European conflicts if it had a two-stage? The P-40 was more than an adequate opponent for the Bf-109 in the African theater. But only because most fights were at lower altitudes. If the P-40 was more suitable for higher altitude fights it may have been able to be used to a greater extent.

The one they gave the P-40F/L had a single stage supercharger, not two stage.

I always did like the look of the longer Packard Merlin engine. If only it was a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine..

There wasn't any measurable difference between the two engines... It was just that the "American" Merlin was built on license from Rolls-Royce by Packard Auto..  Except maybe that the metalurgy in the engine block's  castings was a little different, and American steel was used throughout...

As to add some more to the P-40 frezny,
As most of you know, there has been found an P-40 in the african desert (Egypt) by a polish exploration team, trying to find oil.

Here are some interesting links, all about the same plane.
The Vintage wings of Canada site
Another site with 2 lovely pictures

Youtube movie 1 & youtube movie 2, uploaded by the guy who found the aircraft.

the web album from the guy who found the aircraft, having 65 pictures about the wreck site itself

Dio, anyone?

With regards, Ninetalis.

Thought I would toss in a nice set of reference pictures. These are from Life Magazine and were taken at the Curtiss plant in Buffalo, New York in spring 1941. Lots of nice reference stuff although some of the pictures are reversed so you do need to know a bit of what you  are looking at. These pictures also show zinc-chromate yellow in all its bright glory!

Okay, that should be fine. How many P-40's are you building?

Gamera - Got you down.

Doogs - Ive got you down for two P-40's, are you going to the P-40M conversion instead of them both?

I don't know about early starts, I would prefer if we all waited until the start date. But I wouldn't mind too much if you just worked on the pit.

Don't even know if I'd work on the pit. Thinking more about making the fuselage cuts necessary to mount the Merlin cowl. Need to consult the instructions but I think I can do all the cutting/test-fitting without dealing with the pit.

 Gamera:

BTW Baron I was going to tell you but forgot till Doogs popped this back to the top that I picked up a Hasegawa P-40N about a month ago. If you would please put that down for me, depending on how things go I might tackle the Otaki P-40E after that.

Scale? I've got the 1/48 Kittyhawk IV (same friggin' thing as the -N) and it looks awesome. Kinda want to get a big one, too, but I've already got that -M and a -E in epic scale.

Duh! Dunce Yeah, she's the 1/48th Hasegawa P-40N kit. Looks great in the box and I've heard nothing but good about the kit.

Okay...so it's been awhile. But...can I change mine to a 1/32 Hasegawa P-40M? It'll be getting the Grey Matter F/L nose conversion to represent a P-40F of the Free French.

Also, policy on early starts? Got a few gap days coming up before the big B-25 arrives, but I'm having a hell of a time starting on a new kit. Figure maybe I could get some of the initial hurt out of the way with the cutting...

Put me down too please. This is still a ways off...I want to try a large scale craft for this one...a 1/32 or 1/24. Model type and kit company TBD.

So many Group Builds so little time. Put me in for at least the 1/48 AMT P-40 N in RAAF PTO garb. Maybe the Academy 1/48 P-40C in RAF desert uniform. (I refuse to put shark teeth on any airplane.)
