Vietnam Air War GB - Extended!

That's a helluva funny stunt! I need to find that hase weapons set...

With a Navy Skyraider, you can use  lots of older WWII type bombs becuase those were still being dropped by Skyraiders late in their carreer in Vietnam. But for an Air Force Skyraider, its more a case of the "exotic" ordinance. And aside from the Snakeye Mk.82s, Napalm cans, and 19 shot 2.75" rocket pods, in 1/48 the Hasegawa weapons set kits dont cover much of that. Minigun pods, CBU dispensers, 7 shot 2.75" rocket pods need to be found elsewhere.

Hase issued the toilet bomb with one of their reissues of their 72nd Spad.  Hot Wheels made a "toilet car", and if memory serves me right, the toilet off of it might work for 1/48th.  Hmm.  I might have to go dig through my kids closet and check.

i think you should set it aside and fix it up nice later. Looks great form what I can tell. (the second seat's canopy had a mirror on the top of the frame (outside the canopy) directly on the top center of the frame. you can use the extra mirrors provided in the kit (x2)

I read that book back in ’08; very inspirational story. I don’t know how those guys got thru that nightmare. Not sure I could have done half as good.

Those external mirrors were installed on later production Phantoms and retrofitted to surviving operational early Phantoms. They would not be correct for Scat during the time Col Olds flew her.

Yeah, but like those two bumps on the tail cone those are later fittings. Not as that F-4 was originally built.

Check out this thread of Vietnam F-4C pics. Old's bird 64-829 was later transferred to the 366TFW and is on page 2 almost half way down in photos of both sides at Cam Ranh Bay. Neither the external rear seater mirror or tail bumps are there to be seen in 1967-68 when the photo was taken.

My Hun is now back in the lead of the "to do" list. Today I applied a wash to all panel lines of Burnt Umber.

Tomorrow depending upon weather conditions I may apply the final top coat, and then attach all the last parts. As of right now too hot and humid for airbrushing...

@Professordeath........if you let your phantom in this way it's a sin.....even if there 're same small imperfection I think with a good washing,same armament improvment and also with the anti fod protection to the air intake the look is very impressive.These planes was very dirty and wethered...not shiny like same modellers like to show........Ciao Enrico

Thank you Enrico. Yes I am doing a silver lacquered Hun. I used Tamiya Flat Aluminum for that and the overcoated with Future for the decals. On the rear fuselage it is Tamiya Gold Titanium (mainly) and Silver Titanium (selected panels) with Model Master Jet Exhaust on the afterburner and rear most portions.

You're very correct about the appearance of US aircraft in SEA. They sat out or flew in the tropical weather, monsoons and harsh sunlight, 24/7 during their entire time there. They were not in hardened shelters like the aircraft in Europe. And carrier aircraft had the added wear of salt air and sea spray.

Stik what weathering techique did you use on your hun and what materials? It looks great!

I just used a wash of MM Enamel Burnt Umber along all panel lines. After the wash was dried, I go back with a thinner moistened brush and smear the wash back in the direction of air flow, and/or down with gravity.

And as of today midday here, she is done...

The trick is dissimilar layers. Enamels over acrylics or vice versa. That way the weathering coat cannot "attack" the base coat beneath it. In this case I had arcylic paints sealed with a top coat of Future. The enamel wash and thinner clean up would never remove that.

I have a one or two armor kits VERY near the finish line I need to take care of, and then my F-104 will be up.
