Old Ordie

Len,

Both the F-8 and the A-7 were flown extensively in 'Nam.  We had two squadrons of A-7's in CVW-11 on the Kitty Hawk in '70-'71 on Yankee.  When I first got to Miramar in '68, there were still a number of F-8 squadrons deploying to SEA on a regular basis.

Ord

F-8s flew from the begining at TonkinGulf, to the last. They were the only fighters that could be carried on the angle deck Essex class carriers- Intrepid, Hancock, Oriskany, Bonne Homme Richard, and all the others that served in SEA waters.... Only When those carriers were retired from line duty could the F-8s be retired from the VF squadrons. Truly the last of the gunfighters.

stik,

Thanks for the info, I asked their modeling sight and their rep said "maybe Mk 82's".

So I guess it just wasn't documented.

Jeff

Why not email the Senator? Tell him that you are a registered voterWink, are building a model of the aircraft that he flew on his last combat mission and would like to know what ordinance he was carrying that day. His email should be public record for his constituents. The records exist somewhere, but as to it being easily found is another matter.

Here`s a question for the experts....was the A-7 Corsair II flown in the Viet Nam War? I had the A-7 and A-8 kits on top of each other and started building the A-7 (was supposed to start the Crusader)..oops. I think it wasn`t flown in the war but want to be sure. TIA.

That stinks about the pilot Subfixer, especially if he had ejected safely.

The Stingers had cool tail art. Glad to be of service. We lost one of them over the North during that operation. The pilot was believed to have drowned after ejection over the Gulf after being hit by groundfire.

subfixer

I was a crewmember of USS Ranger in the Gulf of Tonkin (coast of North Vietnam) in 1972 during Linebacker II. We had two A-7E squadrons deployed with us. VA-25 "Fist of the Fleet" and VA-113 "Stingers".

That`s the best news I got today....the kit decals are for VA- 113 Stingers.....no AM decals..wooohooo!!

Did a quick check and the A-7`s did see combat in Viet Nam on a couple of carriers and with the AF. So I will be building the A-7 1st, then the A-8. Thanks again Jeff.

troublemaker66,

Nov. 1967 on the Ranger. By 1972 the Airforce had it.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff! Just to be 1000% sure, they definately were "in country" ? I`ve been crazy busy and haven`t been able to do much researching, let alone have any bench time..thanks again for the info!

I am pretty sure that they have a Q&A forum on that site where you can ask questions of that sort.

Part of an Alpha strike on a powerplant. Go to www.skyhwk.org to see if they answer your questions.

I'm trying to make the decals for McCain's A-4 but have no idea

what it was armed with. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

It's for a future build so no hurry, If you believe that........

I was thinking the same thing... while at least two of its' last pilots did survive, neither had a good day on their final flight in that bird.

McCain was shot down in A-4E  Bu. No. 149959, Modex AH300, on Oct.26,1967 while assigned to VA-163. He was part of a strike on a power plant on the outskirts of Hanoi and after ejecting landed in a pond within the city itself.

This is the same A-4, 6 days earlier, recovering aboard USS Oriskany with a wounded pilot, Lt Jg Denny Earl.

416 was the Forestall bird that he escaped from and I think it's a curious subject for Hase to do.

Also no "villager", McCain was shot down over downtown Hanoi

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Are you sure of that info? #416 was the one that burned on the Forrestal and he

transfered to VA-163 on the Oriskany since Forrestal had just arrived at Yankee Station.

An A-4E Skyhawk US Navy VA-46 "Clansmen" #416 Tail #149996 (June, 1967). Shot down by a NVA SAM. He broke an arm and a leg and nearly drown in a few feet f water. He was rescued  by I believe an NVA ssoldier but maybe a villager, and was stabbed in the foot on his way to the other soldiers. He was release five years after that, but decided he woul'dnt leave without the others and was sentenced to five more years as a POW. The book is called "Faith of My Fathers'' I highly recomend that book to any Nam' or aircraft guy.
