My First Time GB - feeler

Does anyone know when hes due back? I know he has to disappear occasionally, but he usually announces it and when hell be back.

I can't remember which kit was my first. Unlike many kids who started with cars, I started with WW2 as the subject. And seeing how my Dad and all but one of his brothers were in the US Army Air Corp. (my other Uncle went to the US Navy and flew for them).

That said, I have to say I think my first kit was probably the B-17.in 48 scale.

Question. Do we have to have our first kit?

I believe some flexibility is allowed as kits may not be available or people can't recall there early kits. But hopefully the host will be back son and can confirm.

The ones in the plastic baggies are probably 1:72 Airfix kits. The eagle you could maybe find on evil bay.

Almost every kit is available somewhere. Just a matter of how hard do you want to look for it and how much do you want to spend on it.

If I can go with "one of the first", then I'd definitely be interested.

The very first kit that I built with my dad was an eagle from Space:1999.  Not gonna find one of those anytime soon.

After that were a couple of cheapie kits from the local drug store.  The things came on plastic baggies with a stapled-on foldover cardboard thing stating the type ( one was a Me 109 and the other was a Spitfire ) .  I haven't seen those types of kits since.  Then there was a cheapie Yamato kit that was non-scale and I doubt is available any more.

The next kits I remember were given to me for my 10th birthday ( with, finally, some actual cement and paints ).  I don't remember the order I built them in, but there was a Panther, a Corsair ( I think 1:32 scale ), and a 1:48 scale Viggen that I bought another copy of when I found it several years ago and haven't started.  

If one of those 10th birthday kits is "close enough", then I'm in.

I think it has to stay alive, I've bought a Frog Thunderbolt for the kit and an Academy one for the decals !

FINALLY MOVED IN!!!. will be several weeks before i can get building again. The office is packed with boxes.

O the joy of moving. I couldn't wait to get everything set up when i moved all my stuff home a couple of months back. But i was lucky in that i could prep it all before hand and it was only a couple of days before i was back at it.

I am finishing up my 109 finally and am looking forward to starting this group build with my son. He's looking forward to it as much as me. It gives me just the time I need to make him a novice on the airbrush. Nothing like practicing on scratch paper at first and then a spare fuselage half. It will be strictly an out of box build with no other frills than a classy paint job but am looking forward to it.

Realised this was was slowly going down the forum, and don't want it to disappear. Deattilio hasn't been on for a while, i am assuming he is still have connection problems. I do hope this GB is still a go.

Just realised the starts late December. That means i can pack it up and finish off my other 2 kits i left out to do this month.

As I said earlier, my first kit was a Frog P-47D, which I've acquired again for this GB. However, my first CAR kit was a Monogram 1/32 Mustang, which I built a couple of years later, maybe about 1979 or so.

I've had it in mind to build another of these for some time, and I've just started it for the Monogram Mafia GB.

I know it's too early for this GB, but I just thought I throw a photo in here to keep the excitement going. I won't keep doing it unless the time frames happen to coincide.

Ummm, its an amazing kit for a first kit. Awesome detail on the outside. The cockpit leaves ALOT to be desired (it sure aint tamiya) and theres no wheel bay detail at all. The exhaust is an open tube with a nozzle (open all the way to the cockpit) The decals are old and yellowed, so ill have to figure something out there (maybe scan and correct)

Externally, it wont take much to get to my usual standard, but internally theres a hell of a lot of work to be done, and with 6 weeks of disruption in the middle of it, its going to be rough.

Hi all!!  I finally got internet hooked-up in the new house but have yet to find my desktop computer to get me up to a good stride concerning interaction on the forums; I am still working from a tiny netbook whose screen isn’t much larger than the palm of my hand, nor is it thee quickest of contraptions making for some frustrating occasions on the simplest tasks.
            It looks like there is a good momentum going in preparation for our December start-time – yet to be precisely established.  I too managed to get my hands one a re-box of the first kit I put together, along with a set of decals that is very close to the originals.  I will post pictures and information on the kit once I find my computer and scanner from the packed boxes and get it hooked up.

That sounds right. How's the kit look? I picked up a Fujima Stuka second hand and I haven't opened it yet. I was told their kits are pretty good, but I've never done one.

Hey question. Were not allowed to use AM parts right? But were allowed to scratchbuild as much as we want?

Yup. If i remember rightly. I got it in palmerston north while visiting my grandparents. Got it home and built it with no paint and no filler. Just pure assembly and then mum helped me with decals.

YAY! the mirage arrived today.

Didnt realise how excited i was going to get about this.

This sounds like an awesome GB!

I will be lurking on this one...since I don't know exactly which was my first (or whether I wish to re-make them): a motorized motel of the USS Missouri (approx. 1/350th?) or the Revell P-51 Old Crow?

I dunno. But I'll lurk.

Man this is already fun and we haven't even started building yet! It's funny the stories that pop up. The F-16 in the can of latex was too much. Ha ha ha

Lol. I think the first paint job I did was dipping a snap tite F-16 into a can of house latex and drawing on camo with a crayola marker.

Any photo's would be nice.

Whats funny is I didn't either. At that age I thought, "Cool! The prop is already black so I don't have to paint it!" Just put a little silver on the hub and jot a few dabs of yellow on the prop ends.

The bottom I painted with some shade of gray enamel I had with a paintbrush and get this (try not to laugh too hard. My dad was a mechanic and it was handy) I used gasoline for paint thinner. The joys of ignorance as a kid I'll tell ya.

Yep. At least the top sprue set is. The rest in the bag is a dark blue. It's all as I remember it years ago.

Good grief is that BLACK plastic!?
