More clearly stated this kit was released in 1988 and is a re-pop of the original kit that was released in the 60's.

Ok. I informed my son that not only were we going to build the Dauntless together but do it in a group build and post pictures of it. He is looking forward to it as am I. Any hows here are some pictures of what we have to work with. It seems this is a re-pop of the original kit that was released in 1988. Hek the instructions are yellowed.

I'm bookmarking this one as a possibility. Can't commit yet, since I already have a lot going on in the next several months, BUT...

Here's my story: My dad got me interested in airplanes when I was around six. It wasn't hard to do, since he was an engineer, and we lived between the Naval and Air Force test stations. One of the first airplanes he told me about was the SR-71, and it immediately became my favorite for several years. Somehow we wound up with a model of one, and since I was waaaay to young to mess with it yet, he built it for me, while I watched. Now he was never a big modeler and didn't do much more than glue it together, but I had that thing until I left for the Navy twelve years later! He made me several more models like that before finally finding some of the snap tites that I could muddle my way through, but that SR-71 holds a lot of good memories. Since I can't for the life of me tell you what the first thing I technically built was, I want to ask the GB host if an SR-71 would be acceptable for me, since it's the first model I remember having.

Thanks, Budd

Not often i buy a kit for a specific GB, but this sounds like fun. Mine turned up this morning. The decals look ok, hopefully they will hold. I think originally i used the Shark mouth markings, though with the aircraft painted black.

This all sounds interesting. The first kit I built was when I was around 11 or so if I remember correctly. It was a 1/48 Monogram Dauntless dive bomber with the operational dive brakes, a bomb that would release and operational landing gear. Sheesh thats been 33 years ago. I picked one up around 14 years ago at a model show in Dallas. I was going to build it with my son anyways. I'll be in on that one. I'm in with waynec on his question. Airbrushing and acrylics allowed?

apologies for not reading all 4 pages of comments

i started building models in 1958. i can't remember what i had for dinner yesterday, much less a model. i will be building a revel AMERICA and possibly a revel PEDRO NUNES for 2013 NATS. i built these when i was a in high schiool ('65-'69) when my dad was very sick. if either of these would fit the criteria i'm in. i presume airbrushing and acrylicsare allowed.

Sounds like we have the gears in motion for a great GB!  I am excited to see the builds as they develop, especially as this will be the first GB I host.

Unfortunately I must sign-off for a while as I begin my trek cross country to commence my post-military career.  I will try to hop-on as hotel Internet allows but I do not expect to be back to normalcy until sometime in October.  I too will acquire my kit and be ready to start the build in late-December and will send a message to all those signed-up prior to the start date.

Mikey, I think I found it what you are looking for!  My batteries in my camera just died, so no pictures right now.  It is a 1/48 Fujimi Mirage IIIR, molded in silver, with a Swiss scheme (and French), and a pilot as you described, with big drop tanks, and no ordnance.  I can't find a copyright date on it, but it isn't a recent kit.  It looks to be a pretty nice kit.  Very sparse cockpit, but it looks nice in the plastic.  The decals are still in the original bag too, but appear to be partially stuck to the bag.  I also have its stablemate, the IIIC.  That can be Israeli, French or South African.

Does that sound like it?

As for me, I am struggling to remember what was first.  Maybe an MPC Trans Am blackbird, or a Monogram Me 262?  Hmm...

Great idea for a GB!!!

Cheers,

Greg

Could very well have been, thanks ninetails. Id know for certain if he showed the pilot. I distinctly remember the pilot have a couple massive holes in him and clutching at his chest and abdomen and slumped to one side.

Chubby 7 year old me with said kit:

Really, I love that pîcture! I wish I was still that cute when I had my first kit! Wink

Btw, Scorpio, I think I found your kit, could it be that it was 1/32?
Because there is a 1/32 Revell kit of the Mirage in metalish color, and as you might know, those old kit of Revell/monogram have pilots included, Here is some dude building one, and it looks like your Mirage on the Box art!

 With regards, Ninetalis.

Ye, apparently released in 1975. The other one i saw on E-Bay had a price sticker of 39pence. Thinks have ceratinly gone up a bit since then.

I have just taken the plunge and bought the only one currently on E-Bay. It's a bit cheaper than the one on their the other day. I am certain this is the same boxing that i originally had and after further checking, this must be the one i originally built as the old Airfix 86F is a reboxing of a Heller kit.

After much brain storming I think mine was the batmobile, based on the first movie .

Too bad the ones I've found so far on eBay are asking pretty high prices, especially for a kit that if make just for $*#% and giggles and then give to the boy to drive around with his other cars.

Have to keep looking.......

Here's a link to a couple of on-line second hand dealers who have a lot of kits reasonably priced and the shipping costs are much less than a lot of the ebay quotes

http://www.kingkit.co.uk/

http://www.heritageaviationmodelsltd.com/

Kingkit actually has an old Revell boxing of the HH-60D , slightly different box art but I expect it's the same kit . Asking price is about $24 AUS with only $11 for shipping from the UK to Sydney , Australia . Not too bad a deal I guess . In any case I've decided to re-build my original HH-60D kit as it would be more pleasing to see her in all her former glory .

Lot's of nice kits at those two links though !

Unfortunatly for me , I've been told by the family , "no more kits" for at least the rest of the year ......Sad

I saw a Matchbox SH-2F Seasprite on ebay with the current bidding at $25 with another $25 for postage

John .

Seriously, $25 for postage. Some people on E-bay just seem to be living on another planet. I have seen this with postage a few times, its absurd. And i was looking at an old Star Wars kit the other day. The guy had it at a buy it now price of £85, because it was rare. But there were a couple of others of exactly the same kit, going for a tenner or so.

Awesome ...Yes

I was going through my few unbuilt newer 1/48 kits and saw a minicraft UH-60 medivac helo and I checked inside the box for the decal sheet to see if there were instrument panel decals and yes there are . So I'll be able to scan and print out a copy for my HH-60D re-build .

This should be a great Group Build , thank's deattilio ...Toast

If i could get some help that would be awesome. It was this aircraft(those markings OOB or something very similar), but it didnt come with any underwing stores. It was molded in silver, the pilot was posed oddly, like hed been shot. and i seem to remember it being 48 scale. but i could be wrong. I built it in the mid 90's

I’ve never been a big fan of jets but do recall receiving – if memory serves correctly, a Revell or Monogram Mirage in 1/48 in the late 80’s, but I think it had a blue camouflage – I think.

Helo H-34

One of the first kits I built about 27 years ago was the 1/48 Revell HH-60D Nighthawk .

I had a search on ebay for the same kit and saw one on offer for $25 ; However postage from the US to Sydney will cost me an additional $42 ....."OUCH"

So are re-builds allowed as I went rooting through my many spare parts box's and managed to locate just about all the parts to get my original HH-60D back together

So there she sits awaiting a new lease on life . If the postage wasn't so high on the ebay kit , I would have probably bought it but maybe it's a blessing in disguise as there's really no reason why she can't be put back together .

So are re-builds allowed .....

John .

Wow!  This never even crossed my mind, you can’t get closer to rebuilding your first kit than actually rebuilding your actual first kit.  Absolutely this is allowed, once again – WOW.

O.K here's my official entry. Found one for $20 on Amazon which isn't too bad.

When I was a kid, I was a HUGE fan of Jurassic Park. For my 7th birthday my grandparents got me this kit which is my second ever kit after the before mentioned USS Olympia which is priced too high, and I'm moving in March so a ship is out of the question. Lindbergs Jurassic Park velociraptor was actually very well detailed, the last time I saw it was about three years ago after my grandma died and we were cleaning the house to sell. It had a thick coat of what I'm assuming is testors 1/4oz gloss orange on it with thick black stripes running across it's back. One hand and a foot was missing from the glue encrusted dino. I never thought to keep it and it met it's destiny in the garbage.

Very interesting indeed, this is turning out to be quite a diverse selection of projects.  I remember this being an impressive movie when it came out, hard to believe it was almost 20-years ago.

Bish

The ones i found look like they are in the original boxing, some collector would have a fit if they knew i was actually going to build it. The prices were a bit more than i would normally pay for an Aifix kit, but not as bad as i had expected for a kit of this vintage. I just hope the decals are ok.

I too have a couple kits awaiting their turn at the table that would make collectors cringe.  Granted I did not pay anywhere near the current ebay prices of $70+ per, but did pay to build them.  Worse for the collector-minded, both the kits are getting heavy surgery making them nearly indistinguishable from what is currently in the box.  They are Life Like / Adams 1/40 LVTA5s, one will get chopped and styrened to an LVT4 and the other to an LVTA5 Modified – when their turns arrives and time allows.

I just can't believe how expensive kits have become over the years ... Surprise

here's a pic of some of the box tops of my early 1/48 & 1/32 builds of which most of them I gave away when I decided to build mostly in 1/72 scale

I saw a Matchbox SH-2F Seasprite on ebay with the current bidding at $25 with another $25 for postage , I couldn't see any Revell S-55 Sabena kits ; I never realized how rare they would become .

I found a early photo in one of my albums of some of the bigger scale builds

As I said I gave them all away for nothing about 20 years ago .

Everything is so expensive today ......bummer .

Well i think i have found a kit. I was sure the one i built just had the open nose, which i now know is an F-86F. But it seems that can't be as Airfix did do that kit back then. So it must have been an 86D with a nose cone. It was 30 years ago, so the memories ain't fresh. And i have found a couple in original 70/80's boxes, on E-bay. One even has the original price of 39p, now those were the days.

Awesome, I piled up several of these over the last several years.  They are still reasonably priced, especially the MPC boxings.  I was using them to practice my NMF before committing paint to the nicer/pricier Hasegawa offering.  It is still waiting on my skills to improve.

The ones i found look like they are in the original boxing, some collector would have a fit if they knew i was actually going to build it. The prices were a bit more than i would normally pay for an Aifix kit, but not as bad as i had expected for a kit of this vintage. I just hope the decals are ok.

Nice find on the replacement Raptor kit , Mike  Yes

Another blast from the past from me is this rather sorry looking 1/48 Hasegawa HSS-2B Seaking

The canopy has survived unscathed but ther are no cockpit side windows or fuselage windows .

Another check on ebay and the cheapest one I saw was $48 with $16 for postage . Mmm $64 in total for a replacement one ; Very tempting but I have already spent $2000 on kits and AM goddies so far this year and the family are threatning to cut up my credit card  or something else Indifferent . I can get by without the credit card but not the something else . So it look likes the ol' venerable Seaking might be salvagable , so I'll pair her up with the HH-60D Nighthawk .

I save all my box tops and instructions , just as well I guess . Everything seems to be there and the canopy , cockpit door windows and lower nose windows appear to be in good shape .

The cabin door windows have dried blobs of tube glue on some of the corners as does the small gunners window pieces , I suppose I could simply make some new windows from clear sheet .

I could scan and copy onto some white decal paper another cockpit consol decal from another kits decal sheet

The up-swung external fuel tanks and support pieces look like they should go back together okay

I have checked through the instructions a couple of times and I think I have all the parts accounted for

So there she sits awaiting a new lease on life . If the postage wasn't so high on the ebay kit , I would have probably bought it but maybe it's a blessing in disguise as there's really no reason why she can't be put back together .
