OK, for my T-Bolt,  I don't want to use 35 year old decals. Is it ok to replace them but stay with exactly the same aircraft / scheme from a more modern source ?

Cheers

Tony

Decals are the one exception to the rule on aftermarket, specifically because the originals in these kits will most likely be useless.  If you can find modern offerings of the original's scheme is great but if they do not exist it is up to you how to mark it.

Thanks. One of the iterations of the Academy kit has the same markings, so I'll pinch the decal sheet from it and use some other scheme when I finally get around to that kit. I've purchased my Frog one on Ebay. I wish  I still had the original build, I painted it Humbrol Gloss Emerald Green over Slate Grey. Funny I can remember the exact details of this one, black plastic, alternative French markings, etc. My memory is not reliable on other builds that followed.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

If i could get some help that would be awesome. It was this aircraft(those markings OOB or something very similar), but it didnt come with any underwing stores. It was molded in silver, the pilot was posed oddly, like hed been shot. and i seem to remember it being 48 scale. but i could be wrong. I built it in the mid 90's

Ah, then it would be the mirage IIIS with swiss markings.

It may take a bit to track down, i dont even know who made the kit.

Found mt first kit, I think.  It was between the blue devil destroyer and a drag racing gremlin.  I am going after the blue devil.

Cool beans, something on the water to add to the line up.

Well i think i have found a kit. I was sure the one i built just had the open nose, which i now know is an F-86F. But it seems that can't be as Airfix did do that kit back then. So it must have been an 86D with a nose cone. It was 30 years ago, so the memories ain't fresh. And i have found a couple in original 70/80's boxes, on E-bay. One even has the original price of 39p, now those were the days.

Awesome, I piled up several of these over the last several years.  They are still reasonably priced, especially the MPC boxings.  I was using them to practice my NMF before committing paint to the nicer/pricier Hasegawa offering.  It is still waiting on my skills to improve.

Does it need to be the exact same kit? And what do you class as the first kit? The snap together that dad built under my supervision? The glowing tarantula a built from a magazine? Or the swiss mirage III that my mum helped me with after dad left? I cant even remember who made it. Pretty sure it was 48 scale though, molded in silver.

The GB will be focused on your first kit, or one of the first kits you built because I know there are many kits that are unobtainable either due to existence or the ridiculous price demanded by collectors.  If you were to tell a story about getting into the hobby how would answer this question? - The first model I built was a .....  That would be the first go-to kit for this GB.  Hoping you can add your kit and story to the build.

Alright friends – it looks like the build is a go!

I will admin deadline the GB for the time being to allow the group to get their hands on their models to revisit the memories of excitement in just getting a model and, for the most part, whole heartedly believing the likes of Lindberg, Airfix, Frog, Revell and many others did their due diligence to provide us with an accurate representation of our favorite car, ship, plane or tank – before the days of the internet, before there was a Barnes & Noble on each corner and possibly the most influencing factor – before we had incomes to pick and choose our kits and most of us received a model as a gift or reward.  I have mentally prepared myself for the inaccurate shapes, fence-like raised detail in all places but the interior and will constrain myself the best I can to complete the build with no “pre-fab” modern assistance and complete the build on time to appeasement of self and amusement of others.

If more modelers sign up for the build between now and December, even better and perhaps we can lure more into the fold as we proceed.

The roster:

deattilio          Monogram Snap-tite P-51D

tonka          an old Frog kit

corvettemike         Revell ’32 Ford Coupe

Bish          Airfix F-86

taxtp          Frog Thunderbolt

professordeath     Revellogram F-106

Possibles:

I'd like to support it, but I just can't get my head around going back to an old Frog Thunderbolt, when Hasegawa, Tamiya and Academy have such excellent releases. I would be prepared to build one of them in the same scheme as I did back then (1976), if allowed. FWIW, the scheme was for 'Honeysuckle Rose'.

However, if you need my vote to get this GB started, then I will build a Frog T-Bolt for it. There seem to be plenty on Ebay.

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Mine was an F-86, it would have been an Aifix kit i think. My dad's neighbour got it my birthday just after my dad moved into his flat, so would have been 78 or 79. He helped me build it and for some reason it got painted black. If i can find an Airfix F-86, might have to be a re-mold, i am in. Will be a nice to excuse not to stress over AM or a Dio.

It kind of changes the nature of the GB though, so  I appreciate that you may not want to do it this way.

If it can be any of our first kits I can use the Revell '32 Ford Coupe. I got that kit in 6th grade so I was 11 at the time. I hadn't really built much up to that point I think this would be my 4th or 5th kit. That's about the furthest back I can go since they are still readily available. Everything prior to that is scarce or prohibitavly priced.

Looks like we have perked some interest, pretty cool stuff.  Due to personal capability and availability constraints I will use Friday as my last day toward decision.  I’ll put the mark at five, if we have a solid five participants I will consider it a go and awaken the party in December when it is time to begin.  If not, I will shelve the GB for a later date and work on the project in the Aircraft forum.  I use Friday because that is essentially when I “fall” off the grid for a while.  All my belongings, save air mattresses, netbook, iPad and essentials were boxed and shipped off in mid-August.  I follow suit Monday but am shutting down all my phone/internet Friday evening in preparation to drive half way across the country.  Computers can sustain only so much attention and me & the wife have been playing nightly bouts of Scrabble and as she puts it, living on the frontier.  All should be back to operating by the beginning of October – hopefully, and I can carve-out some time at the hobby desk again.

To busy, but I like the idea. I honestly can't recall the very first kit I had. It might have been a helicopter which was too complicated for me back then.

Revell 1/232 USS Olympia, I was 6 or so at the time. It sank in the backyard pool. I like the idea but they go for around $70 on Ebay  so I probably can't join in :(

My First Time GB - feeler
Posted by deattilio on Monday, September 3, 2012 8:55 PM

This is a proposed GB for a trip down memory lane and, as the working title suggests, to confess our first experience in scale modeling.  The goal is to acquire the first model you ever built, be it a far cry from anything your discriminating taste and skills may allow to grace the work bench today, and apply the acquired skills to the kit that lured you into the hobby.  There in lays a personal challenge to most, only apply today’s skills (save one exception) – no aftermarket resin, photo etch or any other modern assistance that was unheard of when we peeled away the cellophane or tipped the box top of our first model.  Scratch building parts is perfectly fine as it shows off the skills gained since before we even knew what an airbrush was.  The one exception would be decals, primarily because if they are original they would be about useless anyway, and many of the reissued kits come pre-painted, so a hunt for after market decals, preferably mimicking the originals but not necessary, would be our one external “pre-fab” accessory beyond the box.

I believe this will be a quick build for most as I imagine many of our first kits were snap models.  For some our first kit may be financially beyond good sense or purely no longer obtainable, in that instance do your best to find one of the first kits you built, again back when your finished kits impressed no one except at best your parents.

This is a feeler for a GB I propose to begin in late December to allow time for some kit-hunting and last about six months, ending before summer and the onslaught of “must be perfectly detailed” projects – work bench, honey-do or otherwise.

Rules:

Air, armor, auto, trains, ships, sci-fi or figures all wanted – the fact we all started with some form of a model is all that matters

Acquire the first kit you ever built, original or reissue

Apply the masterful skills you’ve gained since that first kit

No after market resin

No after market photo etch

Scratch build details as desired

After market decals allowed

Post a photo of the kit pre-build

Explain when, where, why or how you got into the hobby with your kit

Post photos as you progress

As you build, look at the project at hand to appreciate how far your tastes and skills have progressed with glimpses at the modern kits sharing space on the bench

Set aside OCD and enjoy the build and what got you started in the hobby

Start late-December

End early June

If there is enough interest I’ll collect the names and fire up the GB in late December.
