Monty, your cockpits are coming along nicely. I will also be watching to see how your masking tape belts finish up. First time I tried that was early this year, my first GB here at FSM. I didn't know they were supposed to be painted, and I don't think I'm going to try to get into those cramped quarters now. Embarrassed

Very good work on that dropped flap. Never would have thought of that.

Doug, let me tell you this one is over the top. Zowie. Want to say thank you yet again for taking the time to take and post pics of the exterior progress. So very helpful. And I agree, this one is very deserving of one of your splendid dios.

I'm glad JR asked about the exhaust treatment, and for your detailed reply. I've been having very little luck spraying very thin acrylic mixes, guess I never thought of going even lower on the pressure for some reason.

A thousand apologies if you covered this earlier, but to save me some searching, could you tell me if you used any enamels (or non-acryls) on the exterior? Thank you, sir.

MJ, your name is becoming burnt into my brain as the master of engine superdetailing. This one is looking great (that resin kit is really something, I also have not tried a resin engine set yet), and I watch your progress with bated breath, mate.

Allen, congrats on your first GB badge. Very well deserved indeed with that nicely executed 190 of yours.

Everyone, Monty's post made me remember I've been looking for a very thin and small razor saw something like the Hasegawa one Monty showed. I've looked at Sprue Bros and Squadron to no avail. Can anyone recommend anything, in addition to the one Monty showed for me to consider?

Joe: Beautifully done Joe!! You're getting that engine detailing stuff down to an art. Looking forward to your in depth tutorial.Wink

Monty: Whoa! Now that's very cool. That is a new one on me and you have executed the downed flaps very well. Thanks for the step by step on that, it's greatly appreciated.

Handi:Thank you for the encouraging comments bud.

Monty: Thank you also and you should really give resin engines a shot. You of all people could really do a job on that!

blackdog:I used to wonder what was behind that panel as well before I researched this bird. CMK offers the undercarraige set that contains this detail as well as a resin access panel.

Bish:A Staffel.......................HAHAHA lol.

Nathan T:Thanks man! I really focused on weathering on this one because I knew these birds were worked to death with little regards to cleaning out of desperation.

Doug:I can't wait to see this thing in a diorama!! I'll post pics of it when you have it all done pal.

Doug! Awesome build. You captured that particular scheme perfectly. Very talented work on all your builds. Thanks for sharing.

Mustang- Great work on the resin parts. Your painting and weathering  really brings the resin to life.

Monty- nice cutting. I would've slipped with the blade a dozen times doing that....

Monty... Nice technique, I've tried the tape belts when none were available and they come out nice!

Black Dog... Yup and Ju88s and Ju87s. I've read 2 things about the 190s , 1, they entered the war about the time that Germany was starting to be pushed out of North Africa and 2, The intense African heat could play hell on the BMW air cooled engines. Just something I remembered reading somewhere.

Bish...Hadn't thought about that but now that you've mentioned it...(ha)

Joe (M) excellent progress! Loads of good detail !

Doug, are you going for your own Staffel,is that 6 now, half way there. You still have 5 months, I reckon you can do it.Wink

Allen, that's a great job on that white scheme.

And everyone else as well, just so much to keep up with.

Rigidrider. Thank you I'm going to look that book up. I have always liked the africa campaign like you said its always 109s and also the 110s.

I always wondered what was behind that panel in the 190 tail.

Joe - The engine block looks very convincing! never done a resin one before.

Doug - Congrats on a fine looking 190! I like the worn out look as if it had better days.

All - Here's more progress pics. This time, I am working on the flaps. As promised, the only major modification will be just playing around with the flaps.

Sawing each ends  with a Hasegawa mini-saw.

Thinning the inner line with the help of a steel ruler.

Bending it slowly to get a dropped angle.

Ok fellas! Here's where it got really fun for me. I built this 213 as though I were assembling a real engine and it almost felt like I was. So without further delay here's the recap of the progress pics:

First we start with the base engine right out of the Aires box:

Its got alot of detail right out off of the resin block as you can see.

Next I applied a coat of RLM 02 gray with a HEAVY  wash and a light dry brushing of black pastel to give it not only a "worn in" look but also a different color overall.

Next I focused on the supercharger/ accessory drive gear box on the back of the engine. I just went stoooopid here! What a blast this was. Again a coat of RLM 02, heavy wash and a light dry brushing of ground up black pastel. Then I started painting the detail and adding it to the base part. The PE lubrication lines and the supercharger intake screen just added extra "flavor " to it.

Displayed below is the completed supercharger/ accessory gear box taped to a MM paint bottle:

and the other side:

Doug:That thing is just SICK!!!!! I'll get that thing posted to the intro post today man. Good grief!!! That thing is clearly over the top. I'm glad you are still here and building buddy.

Allen:Chanting.....hahahahaha...."I want EZ line! I want EZ line......." lol

Congratulations on your first GB badge as well! What a GB to start it off with. Thanks for joining this build and continuing on here.

Joe Rix:Cant wait to see those pics man!!!

Monty:Another 72nd scaler that kills it with the detail! You and Bish must know each other! lol Keep it coming Monty. Good stuff.

Clemens:Dude where's the pics? Can't wait to see more of your progress pal.

Doug, that looks great!  I really like her "flood pants" too.

Clemens, I appreciate the offer, it was very kind.  No sweat for me to order the stuff, I just need to exercise patience while it ships.  We moved from Ottawa in 2011.  Go figure I get back into this hobby after we leave. There are no lack of hobby shops there.

Am now chanting (no pun on the username intended) EZ-Line EZ-Line over and over.

Thanks Handi, JR... I user a artist acrylic Brunt Umber, Thinned about 10 to 1 (10 thinner to 1 paint) then just barely dusted with some Tamiya X19 smoke, about 3 to 1. The "Smoke is fairly transparent so not too much thinning is required to get it translucent. The "Americana" brand of artist acrylic I used, does NOT thin with alcohol or Lacquer thinner and becomes gummy if tried. So just straight water is used to thin, leaving a very thin and runny mixture, so I had to lower pressure just enough to where the mix would still atomize properly but not bead up and run. several passes were required to get it to do as I wanted (drying inbetween coats w/hair dryer) building up coverage but still able to barely see the paint underneath.

Sorry ...long description but thats how I did it,

Doug

PS  Welcome back Joe! Glad all went well on your short trip.

Yeesh, Ya leave town for a day and a half and you find yourself with pages of remarkable modeling to catch up on. I'll do my best to touch on everyone.

Doug: Supremo, Fantastico!!! Bravo, my friend on one absolutely awesome Butcher Bird. That one does indeed deserve to be dioed up. Your paint and weathering is just top notch stuff. I particularly like your exhaust effect. What shade of brown did you use. I will be doin something similar as my bird operated out of Latvia and presumably ran a richer mixture.

Monty: Welcome to the GB. It is really fantastic to have you join us. Love the fact that your in with a couple of 1/72's. Looks to me you are off to a great start.

Allen: Very beautiful work! Truly well done.  Sweet Action for you stay on here with us and punch out another.

Joe: Glad to have you backing knocking out some more incredible modeling. Excellent progress so far.

jugjunkie: Nice work so far. But, I am curious about the installing of the antenna prior to painting the canopy frames. Is that temporary or do you have a plan I am not familiar with?

Take Care all. I hope to have some progress for you all shortly

OK friends, I'm done with this one...

Again, this is a Revell/Monogram (Dragon)Pro Modeler FW190 G-2/3. It was a member of 1/stab- SG2 designated Red7. Her pilot at this time was OberLt. Herbert Bauer, Flying out if Furstanwalde, Hungary, Late 1944/45. I have no info on the craft or pilot other then whats above, not knowing whether they survived the war or not.

I am going to do a dio base for this one and will post pictures when complete... Thanks, Doug

Monty, thanks very much. I look forward to seeing your build take shape.  I'm particularly interested in your tape harnesses, as I haven't had much luck in that department.

Nathan - I ordered the Hobby Boss kit and some Eagle Cal decals.  It was pretty reasonable; it's just the shipping that irks me, as I have no local hobby shop around here.

Look out below! (my first Group Build badge - yippee!)

Great start Monty. Those belts will sure spruce up the pits.

Chanter- The HobbyBoss kit should be quite affordable. Don't they go for around 35 bucks? The Tamiya kit has many issues besides the gear, and I would not even consider using the kit decals. I know Eduard offers the JV44 limited edition kit, but that is fairly spendy as it includes 2 kits.

Gents: Thanks for the welcome!!

Chanter: Lovely work on the White 190!

Simple Harness

I went straight to business with adding some masking tape harness. Seats are so small that I decided to give it a simple Tamiya masking tape treatment. Tamiya seat (left); Academy seat (right)

In The Tub

Here's the tub looks like with the seats in place. Tamiya's (left) copy has a higher definition of surface detail compared to Academy's (right).

Guys, thanks very much for the comments.

Doug - I plucked the hair right from my wife's head.  lol she said "go ahead" but I think I grabbed 2 by mistake, which means that's the last time I'll get them right from the source.  Whistling

I am going to stick around and do another.  I always loved the JV44 Doras, so that will be next.  It's just a matter of whether I buy the Tamiya kit, which comes in a JV44 version but apparently has some short gear issues, or a Hobby Boss and get some aftermarket decals.  The Tamiya would definitely be the more cost effective solution.

Cool Nathan. Thanks. I'm down to the point now of having references for the bare metal wing detail.

Nice work Joe. Good looking interior detail. Sometimes, scratch built is better.
