If you shoot the Eduard pre-painted pe with clear flat, it will tone down the pe color and actually matches my MM RLM66.

That's interesting to hear. Now if I only knew how MM RLM 66 looks compared to my Gunze colors... Do you have any info on that, Nathan? (I think you are using Gunze as well, right?)

Man PJ, I don't think I've followed one of your builds on the forum before, but I'm glad to have you here in the GB. You have some great modeling skills. Nice job masking the JG 26 bands. Looking forward to the wash. These Eduard kits have some great detail that really pops when they get all weathered up.

Well, I got aquainted with Alclad this weekend. I've used it before for just some small areas or cockpits on other builds, but I decided to go all out on the Dora using 4 different shades on the underwing panels, using a Gloss black base to start. I also got all my preshading done. I'll have some pics up tomorrow, as my busy bench sessions this weekend left no time to post up pics.

Doug - Well, It looks like you're up to your usual spectacular self. Nicely done office. Good to see your recovery is going well.

PlasticJunkie - Nice attention to detail and very well executed.

I was feeling much better today and was able to get in a bit bench time. Some more silly putty masking for the camo repair, painting and wxing the landing gear and decals on the gear doors.

Hey thanks guys for the comments, really appreciated!  Glad you'all approve of my "artistic license" mottling job.

Rigidrider

Glad you are feeling better. That is an awesome job on an OOB office. That looks like a sweet kit.

Nathan

The victory dance was less the tutu and the garage door was closed. I have an Orlando Police Officer living right across and don't  want to be committed to the psycho ward. Propeller

I was able today to shoot the black and white bands. I looked at the pictures of the real yellow 10 and noticed the white band seem to be a tad taller on one side than the black one so I did the same.

Then brushed on a couple of coats of Future. The Future needs at least one day to cure before the next step, the decals and then pin washes.

Looks like a good score on the Italeri kit, Doug. Nice looking office, nicely done.

I like that green clamp! Glad you are feeling better and back to building.

The pit looks great indeed, Doug! Dragon's D-9 seems to be a tad better than the Ta I am building, but the Dragon 190s are nice little kits at a good price. I'm glad you're feeling better again, my firend!

Again this is an Italeri kit I got at a swap meet at my LHS,,, I was a little leary at first but after getting home and looking over I was pleasaed for the price I had to pay.

I still have to make my pilot some seat belts and harness...

the grar bay and lower wing being joined...

and lastly for now , the fuselage halves being joined... Like I said, this is going to mostly be OOB and some extra/leftover PE and resin(possibly). more soon!

Thanks

Doug

Guys... Thanks for the concern and encouragment... Still not 100% but loads better then a few days ago, Heard from Joe R earlier and he seems to be doing better too. PJ... What a great show that was!  And by the by, your progress is looking GREAT!  I'm sure there are some builders that are as good, but I doubt you could find any that are better then the group here!

OK, that being said, time to post some progress myself. I have the pit done and some of the components going together now, This is a nice kit so far and although not as detailed as some, it beats the soup out of many out there...

Can't wait to see the all pe cockpit. I agree I hate Eduard's pre-painted pe. it looks horrible. On my D-13 here I masked the switches and airbrushed it all with my own 66 color. Looks way better.

I just picked up some AB cleaner and I will start repainting the 3 cockpits I screwed up.

Gonna clue us in on what happened?

Sure.

I messed up the base coat on one of the Hasegawa cockpits, so I had to strip that one completely. Nothing special, I just didn't thin the paint enough, so the finish looked really bad...

The other 2 Cockpits were the ones for the Eduard D.9 and D-11 (the dual combo). The PE color is just way off, so I decided to respray them in my own mix of RLM 66. I didn't glue the colored PE parts in place luckily...  All the pits should be done on Tuesday or Wednesday...

There's only a single cockpit I didn't paint at all: The D-13's office. I bought the Eduard PE set for that one and it includes all kinds of PE goodies for the cockpit as well: A new cockpit floor panel, new sidewall details (replacing the molded on details with great looking PE panels), a PE plate for the area behind he seat and some other awesome bits and pieces. I'm still working on this set. I'll post some pics of this particular cockpit before I start painting it, so you can see what I am talking about...

Joe

I remembered I had old Lucy Ricardo in my pictures  and couldn't pass it up!  I've been enjoying Dogfights, specially the Mig killers of Midway.

SchattenSpartan

Glad you like how it's coming out. I just took off the masks and this is how the camo came out using the MM enamels. I thinned it abot 50/50 and dialed the pressure down to about 8 lbs.

and the bottom

The tiger striping came out pretty good on the foil hood which will be displayed in the open position taking care of any minor fit issues.  It's very hard to copy that freaking scheme so most of it I used "artistic license" and mottled away. I'm pretty happy with the results and did a victory dance in the garage when I finished air brushing:

LOL, Thanks PJ. I home from work today. Of course taking in some soup and watching "Ultimate Combat" on the Military Channel. Hope to get in a bit of bench time though. Glory be that daylight savings will grant us an extra hour of modeling.

Nathan and Jester....

Cheers guys!! The filters work sort of like very fine polishing coths. Just be certain you remove any lint left behind. I have tried flow improver, retarder, their thinner etc, etc, and though it helps, I can't get the super fine lines I get with enamels. I will use up the acrylics on larger areas and use them up that way. Still waiting for the Hobby shop to open so I can get those enamels. Don't they know there's inspiration waiting?Geeked

LoL Nathan! Trust me, there was no shortage of tip drying for me either!! Mostly why I started using Mr. Leveling Thinner. I haven't had a chance to try it with MM acrylics yet but it works smooooooth with Tamiya!! I originally intended on buying some Liquitex retarder but could really find any locally so I said screw it and went with the Leveling Thinner.

So I primed up the Dora late this night and didn't quite get away with perfect seams like PJ, but a few spots of sufacer to sand off in the morning and I'm shooting color..., well, alclad that is, on the lower wing panels.

And I hear ya on the MM acrylics. Tough paint to mottle with because they tip dry so fast, even with retarder...(unless your Jester)

PJ, Your moving along very nicely. Excellent paint work on the underside. I too am a big fan of Tamiya primer, white or gray, out of the can.

Nathan

Yes it's MM enamel. I have the other two colors for the mottling in MM acrylics but I don't like to use acrylics for fine detail work like the mottling in this case. I like to use enamels cause I get more control with my airbrush paint pattern so I'll be heading to my LHS tomorrow morning.

Dang PJ. You're racing ahead of me. I looking Gray-violet. Is it MM enamel? Good go on the seams. Primer always reveals at least 1 or 2 touch ups for me. I should be priming and preshading tonite, after I mask off my gearbays.

Joe, really good to have you back with us! Your engine and cockpit are fantastic.

Doug, feel better soon! Darn it.

PJ, good job on the Tamiya rattle can app. All of the exterior details look great!

I used to spend quite of bit of time in FL, saw some fighters from time to time. Up here, it is just not something we see so I get overly excited. :) That would be really cool sitting in the backyard watching those talented pilots do their thing!

Well guys, just take in plenty of chicken soup and watch the Military Channel for a while.

I managed to do a little work on my Dora. I shot RLM66 on the masked canopy and windscreen so it will show thru the clear plastic as the interior color. Next I shot Tamiya fine white primer straight from the can on everything. I don't like using spray cans and prefer to decant it but the Tamiya spray cans deliver a superb coat. I wanted to check for any imperfections with the seams but they all checked out perfect.

I thought the underside joints were going to be a problem but they came out perfect. No putty was used at all. The touch n flow with the Plast I weld took care of any gaps.

I lightly polished the airplane with a couple of coffee paper filters and shot the under wing with Alclad Aluminum. The metalized section was masked and then shot some Model Master RLM75 on the under wing and top sides and the hood and cowl.  I decided to go with Jerry Crandall's color recommendations over Eduard's.

top wing and fuse

The next steps are going to be tricky as I need to mask the wing underside panels for the RLM 76 colors, then the mottling fun will begin. I need to let it dry and cure before I continue.
