Hi Everyone,

Once again I was only able to spend little time at the workbench this evening.  I got a good start on the hole for the mechanical up latch.  Here is how it looks so far:

Obviously I will need to take it slow on removing the plastic.  It is much easier removing it than it is replacing it!  Smile

Ken, I still look forward to seeing the finished product.

Last night wasn't real productive. Mostly, I reassembled the airbrush and then gave my desk top a much needed cleaning. Mostly, I was distracted by a special on one of the public TV stations showing a performance by Bachman and Turner (formerly BTO-Bachman-Turner Overdrive)

I did do some dry-fit testing on the Tiger.:

I figure I have to finish the drive area before the fenders-no way to get the wheels on under them. And I can't get the ends of the track together unless I do it before I put them over the wheels-and I can't glue the idler and drive sprocket in place before the track!

I guess I also will need to make the top of the track sag. I read somewhere that I can add some pegs or pins to hold it down behind the fenders. Not sure what to do if there weren't fenders. I read some tie them down with fine thread, but I can barely see this as it is!

*******

On my workbench now:

It's all about classic cars now!

Why can't I find the "Any" key on my keyboard?

BTO!  I remember them.  "Let It Ride", You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", "Takin' Care of Business", "Hey You", and "Roll On Down the Highway".  Yep, driving to the beach during my high school days listening to them!

Well if anyone can thread that needle, it would be you.  You still amaze me with the detail you are able to do at 1/72 scale.  It is looking really good Jim, even for just a "fun" project.  Yes  Yes

Jim: I'd just leave the wheels and tracks off and paint them separably. At least it works for 1/35th. Then drill a few holes in the sides and slide wire in (I use straightened paper clips) to hold the treads down. Or if you want to add the skirts you won't be able to see the top runs of the tread anyway so don't worry about it. Just tack the skirts on using a little bit of cement for painting and pop them off to put the treads and wheels on.

Ken,

Great stuff...I can pick out that tail section over anything!

Jim,

First and foremost, I'm an armor guy. I just have gotten into aircraft, on my return. I love both the Tiger 1 & King Tiger.

How much slack, do you have, in the tracks? Is it enough to super glue, the tracks to the road wheels?

BTW, the paperclip idea is a great one, Gamera! Paint them black, no one will notice them.

Hi Everyone,

I finished cutting the hole for the mechanical up latch.  Here is how it turned out:

Next I will paint the mechanical up latch to prepare epoxying it in place.

Hey Eric, the armor guy! This is what's unique about this build! Anything goes as long as we all enjoy participating! Too many times we aircraft guys stay on our side of the street, and armor guys stay on theirs. I do believe somebody said Berny started building mostly armor at first. As a first and foremost aircraft guy, I hope you don't mind if I pick your brain just a bit.

There is enough slack there that I will need to take up some of it across the top as it tends to be a little loose around the bottom. Not enough that I could glue the top track all the way down, though. I think the paper clip thing will be the way to go.

The tracks don't appear to be vinyl as the seemed to glue up real solid with liquid cement. I'm curious about what color to use. Kit calls out for just black and I was thinking more along the lines of one of the darker Testors non-buffing metal finishes-as long as it doesn't eat the track.

If you are going to do some weathering on them, I would paint them steel first, then paint the black over it. This way you can chip off, and show the steel underneath. You could also use Tamiya Gunmetal, if you have it, for the top coat.

Hi Everyone,

I painted the mechanical up latch.  I also painted the tail hook since I had the paint in the airbrush already.  I used Model Master Metalizer buffing Titanium.  I like to let it dry overnight before I buff it.  Here they are:

So I will be buffing tomorrow.  I have to work tomorrow as well, so I am not going to get as much done at the workbench as I had originally hoped.

That's a really detailed latch, Ken. Incredible what they can do with photo etch today. Looking forward to seeing everything all buffed up. Big Smile Yes

Sorry to hear you have to work tomorrow. Hope it won't be for the entire day.

Take care,

Hi Everyone!

Great news!  Anyone who knows me knows how much I love the Voodoo.  (You can probably tell by my avatar.)  I just discovered that Kitty Hawk has announced plans to build all versions of the Voodoo in 1/48 scale!!  Here is a link to a first look:

Hi Everyone,

Well since I worked yesterday I had to squeeze my regular weekend chores into one day today and I am just now getting done.  I am wore out.

I did have a chance to score a few nice lithographs on eBay though!  Here is what I got:

Pretty happy with the lot.  Now I will have to buy frames for them!

Finished!

I wish I could get better pictures, that really show off the pre-shading of the panel lines. I took quite a few and then the camera batteries died. So, these are the best. I have to run to the store later on. Hopefully, I can get some outdoors, with natural lighting.

I talked myself out of doing a wash, I didn't want it to look dirty, so I left it alone.

All in all, It wasn't too rough of a build. Sanding and filling but nothing over the top. Getting the parts off the giant sprues, without ruining them, was a challenge.

For an older kit, the outside is pretty detailed. The inside office, not so much. I can see someone doing a lot of scratchbuilding, to liven it up. I am now wanting to do an X-Wing, sometime down the road.

As for this GB...I didn't know Berny, but I hope he would have approved, of what I have done. It was a break from the norm, not the usual aircraft or armor build. I had fun working on it. I hope you guys forgive me for all the posted pics showing some less than exciting progress.

Ok, Eric, shut up already....let's see some not so great pics Stick out tongue

Hey Eric,

Sorry I missed your finish post. Your project came out great! You can see the shading in many of the pictures and it gives the surface a nice variability. Good job!

Not much happened in the workbench department this weekend. Instead I went out of town to spend time with friends fishing, and being out on my friends boat. Most of the action ended up being small perch, blue gills, and other small sunfish. I did manage to catch a turtle and a large carp! Mostly it was all about time spent away from it all and with friends.

Took a little time off work, and today I have just trying to keep busy around the house. This marks the one year anniversary of Mom's passing, and I have been trying real hard to not think about it so much and get all sad, but I'm not having much success at that.

Hopefully, I will get back to workbench soon as I'm nearly ready to throw some paint at the Growler. I want to move forward on that.

On a happier note, here is the little guy who decided to take my bait off my hook. Fortunately, he easily gave up the hook and was not hurt, and was soon back in turtle world. He continued to chase my bait around and I had to be careful not to hook him again.

Hi Jim,

It is good to hear from you.  It is also good to hear that you were able to spend time with your friends and enjoying time fishing together!  Very cool!  And that turtle appears to be very friendly too!

I wish there was something I could tell you that would help ease your sadness of your Mom.  The only thing that will help is time.

So, did you make a decision about buying the new airbrush?

The only decision I made was that I need to watch my spending a bit for a while. So it's sort of "wait and see" for now. The trip across state wasn't cheap and I've been spending more than I should.

I think you spent your money in the right place Jim!  A much wiser investment to spend it toward having quality time with friends than for a thing that will sit on your workbench.  Smile

Tonight I polished the Metalizer on the mechanical up latch and the tail hook.  Here is how they turned out:

Now it is time to return my focus on the front wheel bay and add the wash!

Jim, I loved the turtle too. Don't know why but it makes me smile to think he went after that bait again! I have to agree with Ken on the merits of your getaway. I'm trying to keep my spending in check as well and that means concentrating on building what I have and not buying any more kits for a while. Not easy!

I'm surprised the turtle cam back after the bait a second time as well! Painted turtles like this can live as long as 55 years. Makes you wonder how if they don't seem to learn the first time around. He wound actually swim straight at my bobber and then dive down. How did he learn that there was a tasty worm down there?

The turtle probably figured he'd take your bait and then you'd let him loose again. Hate to see a good hard-working turtle turn freeloader...

Thank you Cliff!  Those lithographs of the C-141A are a rare find.  There are plenty around of the C-141B.  And the one of the Voodoo firing the Genie I had won on eBay once before but the knucklehead shipped it in the frame that had glass.  You really have to pack something like that really good for the glass not to break but it wasn't and when the glass broke, it shredded the lithograph.  The other lithograph of the Voodoo I had never seen before.

They are all good size too, 22 inch X 17 inch.

Hi Everyone,

Tonight I worked on putting the wash on the front wheel bay.  The first go around the gray was too light.  So I did it again with the next darker shade I had on the shelf (which was Flat Gull Gray) which was about perfect.  Those Aires wheel bays are so detailed!  I spent the entire evening wiping the excess wash off and I am still not done.  I will finish tomorrow.  I just hope it turns out half as nice as Jim's work!  Smile

Ouch Ken, sorry to hear about the shredded lithograph- ya think they'd take into account how much the shippers toss stuff around when dealing with glass..... Still those are really cool and looking forward to more Phantom pictures.

Man, I am so disappointed again!  I can't believe it!  This guy just shoved the lithographs into the tube and creased every one of them!  Words can't describe how I feel right now.

What really bothers me is the guy really didn't know how valuable those lithographs were.  Hence the reason why I was able to buy them at the low price that I did.  Those things are long out of print.  But it was still no excuse to damage them like that.

Ken,

Doesn't matter. If he's accepting money for the items, he's responsible for making sure they arrive in good condition.

You may be able to take the creases out with a steam iron. Put it on its lowest steam setting and use a clean T-shirt. Lay the T-shirt over the lithograph and apply the iron to the cloth. Make a series of slow passes, just long enough for the steam to get to the paper but not overheat it. If it doesn't work, send them back and get your money back.
